Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

i really really like Trauma i hope it gets renewed somehow or that another network picks it up i would rather they cancel a stupid reality TV show than the awesome and kick ass show that Trauma is and has so much more potential to become a full blown iconic masterpiece.
I really enjoy TRAUMA and I’m peeved its been cancelled. I can’t stand the show Mercy. It was really great to see one of my fellow New Zealanders starring in it . I’m proud of Cliff Curtis and all that he has accomplished in his career. I look forward to this great show every Monday night and then I wrap up my night watching CSI MIAMI.
Decent shows don’t stand much of a shot yet shows like the simpsons are still on…go figure.
It is the best “medical” show, period. There is more action in this show in five minutes than the rest of them have in a month. It’s less Medical than the others. I’ve never been bored with this show. It should be renewed instead of all the fake and bad acting on reality shows.
I think if CBS, USA, Fox or ABC was smart they would pick up Truma
My husband and I are both paramedics (he’s also a firefighter) and we both like the show alot. It’s crazy for them to cancel it.. they say the numbers are starting to climb but now they’re talking about cancelling it just as people are starting to catch on to it.. Dumb.. and put what in its place another ignorant sitcom that any intelligent person wouldn’t waste their time on..Get it together NBC leave Trauma on the air..
I have watched Trauma scince the very beggining, i really really hope that they do not cancle the show …
It will get better
Every time I enjoy a series, they cancel it. How disgusting. I really enjoyed watching “Trauma.” My husband, son, and I usually got chocked up with the show. I usually fall asleep with a boring show. It didn’t happen with “Trauma.”
I cannot believe that NBC has once again cancelled a good show; although it shouldn’t surprise me. All of the networks, not just NBC, have not given GOOD shows a chance, and yet let mediocre shows continue.
Great Show
One of the few non-cable shows I watch
Hope it moves to cable
Trauma was the best show since ER. My Husband and I can’t wait for Monday nights and we hate having to wait a full week to see it again. I think it is one of the best medical shows in a long time. Great story lines and great suspense! Please don’t take it off the air!!
I have watched Trauma since inception — my husband and I really like it —
it keeps your attention and the hour really goes by fast
Hopefully they will keep it on the air —– usually when a show is good then cancel it
and leave on the stupid 30 minute sitcoms on
I guess the networks seem to think the public enjoys moronic shows —- I guess that is
the demographics they are looking for —
[…] other way, and we’re getting really good. That must have been pretty disheartening to hear the rumors in the fall of Trauma being cancelled and left for dead. I skipped over all of that because I didn’t want to […]
This is ridiculous! They come out with such an amazing show about what happens BEFORE the ER or OR and they decide to take it away because there were “too many medical shows”? Does no one know or understand that the medical field is more than just doctors and ER’s and people coming to a hospital, but about the people that go through the danger and the trouble of going in and rescuing people from either dying or even themselves. They were the side that no one ever really hears about except for when someone calls 911. They really need… Read more »
