Sadly, the Visitors aren’t among us any longer. After two short seasons, ABC has cancelled their V TV series.
A reimagining of the original V, this series tells the tale of what happens when an advanced alien race arrives of Earth professing their desire to help mankind. Fortunately, not everyone trusts them. The second season features the talents of Charles Mesure, Elizabeth Mitchell as Erica Evans, Joel Gretsch, Laura Vandervoort, Logan Huffman, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, and Scott Wolf.
For season one, V ended up averaging a 2.25 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 5.7 million average viewers. It was “on the bubble” but ended up being renewed for a 13 episode second season. The network was hoping that the show would catch on and the ratings would improve.

ABC later reduced the episode order to just 10 installments and debuted them mid-season. Unfortunately, ABC’s gamble didn’t pay off. Season two of V ended up averaging only a 1.9 in the demo and 5.49 million viewers.
Though the network and producers maintained that the show was still in contention for next season, it was clear that there would only be a third season of V if ABC was willing to gamble once again. In the end, they weren’t.
ABC confirmed today that V has been cancelled after two seasons and 22 episodes. The series finale aired on March 15th and, unfortunately, there were lots of unresolved cliffhangers. Hopefully the producers will someday share what they had in mind for season three.
What do you think? Are you sad that V won’t be returning next season? Why do you think the series didn’t catch on?

The origional mini series was good, but the regular short lived run sucked bad. This new one sucked from the gitgo. I agree with a previous post, that what is needed is a return of the mini series. There are a lot of shows, especially sifi shows that would work for a 6 or 8 wk run, but just can’t sustain a series.
I’m definitely sad to see it go, especially with the way it ended. I think it was a great show, and really looked forward to the new episode each week, but I’m starting to get used to getting really into a new show, only to have it cancelled after a season or two. Not cool!
Guess I can clear some DVR space, I was refusing to invest in the last 5 episodes unless it was renewed…
This “V” had some things going for it. Morena Baccarin was hot. Maybe too hot. Didn’t like seeing such a beautiful face sprout needle teeth and swallow rats. Elizabeth Mitchell did a good job as the heroine. Special effects were a lot better. But this re-imagining never pulled on my heartstrings and made me cheer for the heroes as the old V did. The original played the angle that V’s were the German and the humans were the Jews facing conquest and extermination. It had hating those aliens. This one had more action, more violence, more sex, but no drama.… Read more »
I have no clue what it is about fans of something that is getting remade, but they have such hate for the remake. They act threatened as if the remake will literally kill the original work. No matter how successful or unsuccessful a remake is, it will never ruin the memory of the original unless you let it. They do not use the same actors in the lead roles, sometimes not even the same characters/settings and it usually ends up being almost completely different besides the main central plot and the title. So how could a remake possibly “soil” or… Read more »
OMG, I agree with EVERYTHING you said, and I, too, will not get involved with anymore new abc series just to have them pull it off, leaving me hanging. They’ve done this too many times now, I don’t trust them anymore. So, I don’t care what new shows they’ll be introducing, I’ll stick with the ones I have been watching for a long time time now, which now surprises me they haven’t been pulled yet!
Thanks for your post. It was great and very enlightening!
I agree that ABC needs to stop canceling shows… I hate when you get invested in a show only to realize that there is no ending because show was canceled. So disappointed in a network that cannot run a tv show all the way through!!
ABC…What a screwed up network…well I promised that I would stop watching ANY series if they cancelled V…so guess what ABC…I see the logo on my TV and I will change the channel…and I will tell everyone I know to do the same as my friends are always complaining how ABC gets you watching shows only to cancel them 1 season later…totally bogus…hopefully maybe SYFY channel will pick the series up !!! 😀 I wouldn’t even flush the toilet for ABC…cause you know they “Float”. Geez…maybe in ten years they will redo “V” for the third time…hopefully they will actually… Read more »
V is the perfect example of why broadcast networks should bring back the mini-series format. The original V and the sequel both did great as a mini series. Just like it failed on NBC, ABC tried it as a regular series and it failed once again. Broadcast networks will never be able to give the attention and commitment to genre shows like sci-fi, fantasy, etc. as regular series like cable networks can but mini-series did very very well for NBC, CBS & ABC once upon a time. The Event, V, maybe even No Ordinary Family could have really thrived in… Read more »
That is a good idea. But just like all the shows that they put out for us and we start liking them, they just cancel. I love Pushing Daisies, Life Unexpected,My Generation, Samantha Who. I am sad that the Whole Truth, Detroit 1-8-7, and Off The Map are axed as well. ABC and the rest of the networks have no patiences in developing quality shows. Now, I hear that they are going to rehash Charlie’s Angels and Wonder Woman which I bet will suck. I am going to invest my time in shows that I like and my sure that… Read more »
I so agree with you. I loved V, Flash Forward, Pushing Daisies, Off The Map, Samantha Who, The Whole Truth and Detroit 1-8-7! What’s wrong with the “powers that be” at abc? They’ve got their ratings all wrong, it’s not reliable. We have DVR’s and TiVo. Come on, abc, get with the program! You’ve got it all wrong and you’ve all got your heads up your a$$e$! You keep such lowborn shows like The Bachelor, Bachelorette and Bachelor Pad, and cancel the ones that are so much above them?! I’m sorry, but this is f^*^ed up. Does anyone on here… Read more »
V will be missed!
To heck with ABC, put it on another channel on cable or satellite. That is not the only station. I did not miss one episode since it came on but I’m sure I have missed plenty of other things on ABC.
Sorry if this offends any current fans but I’m not the least bit disappointed to see it go. V’s cancellation was long overdue–thank you ABC for putting this horrid show out of its misery! I grew up watching the original 1983 and 84 mini-series and following that, the 1984-85 TV series and enjoyed them both immensely. ‘V’ was a fond and cherished part of my childhood and early adolescence. So when I heard ABC was bringing back the series, I was quite excited, ecstatic even! With great anticipation and eagerness I watched the first episode. Despite having no connection to… Read more »
I totally agree with you. I’m also a big V fan and wasn’t even born when the original came out. Like you I was excited for the re make. But I share the sane emotions. It lacked depth, one dimensional characters. Nothing like the master piece Kenneth Johnson created. I’m glad they cancel it. I was beginning to get pissed off. Now we just have to wait for Kenneth Johnson to make the movie.
I disagree. It was amazing. Did y’all forget they brought back Diana as the mother of Anna. Making it seem like a continuing story. The climax leading up to Anna killing off Diana was exciting. It was not vacant at all. The plot was interesting and the story kept me coming back to see what is going to happen now. If you want more action then go see an actual action movie because this was a drama sci fi series not an action Star Trek or Marvel kind of series…
Very sad. I watched the original as a teen. I liked the new version alot and watched faithfully every week. The season finale was great. I think sometimes the story lines did drag a bit. I think with better writers it could have held the audience and been a hit. Sad I am left hanging with so many unanswered questions. ABC sucks anyway. ABC is a club *****, looking for instant gratification and never giving anything new a chance to turn into so much more.
P.S. And I don’t think the series caught on because there wasn’t quite enough reference to the original series. It wasn’t a “remake” but more a continuation of that older series and unless you were a fan in the 80’s, the depth, the plot, the characters were maybe not as understood.
No I’m not sad at all. The show sucked. Like the event and flash foward it wrote a check it would not cash.
I just told my three kids (ages 9, 11, and 12) that “V” just got canceled. They were HUGE fans of the original miniseries/series I have on VCR tapes and totally connected with this new V series, knowing the interwoven plots between the the two series (i.e. Diana, Marc Singer coming back, etc.). My kids were SO sad that this series is canceled. They looked forward to every Tuesday evening and we would all gear up and get SO excited for our one evening a week we could agree to be in one spot. We loved, loved, loved this series… Read more »
Getting really sick of ABC and the cancellation of so many shows that we love. Forget about my soaps, All My Children and One Life to Live. Now they’ve gone ahead and candelled V. After canceling Flash Forward, and Brothers and Sisters AND the Event? Let me guess. Another reality show will air. Another Wipeout or another Weight loss show or yet another horrifyingly stupid comedy.
ABC sucks and I’m through with it. Bye bye to Channel 7 in New York.
I am so dissappointed at ABC. That’s the only show I still watched on ABC (not directly but through downloading from the internet, due to my unavailability during the time slot).
Way to go cancelling good show such as Ugly Betty and V. But they keep the retarded Bachelor / Bachelorette and Desperate Housewives which clearly had been dragging for the last 2 seasaons.
