Next week, TNT’s Dallas will complete its third season — the first full one without JR Ewing. How’s the TV show done in the ratings? Will it be renewed for a fourth season or will it be cancelled instead?
Airing on Monday nights, Dallas continues to follow the machinations of the dysfunctional and powerful Ewing clan. The cast includes Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo, Brenda Strong, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Mitch Pileggi, Emma Bell, Kuno Becker, and Juan Pablo Di Pace.
The third season began airing in late February and the first episode was down by 11% when compared to the second season opener. That was a reasonable decline but then the second installment dropped by 27%. The numbers dropped even lower as the season progressed.
Year-to-year, Dallas is down by 26% in viewership and down by 38% in the 18-49 demographic. It’s one of TNT’s lowest-rated scripted series and that’s not a good sign for the show’s future prospects. It also has a large cast so that means it’s not a cheap series either.
On the positive side, there’s some financial incentive to keep the show going. Dallas is produced by Warner Horizon Television which, like TNT, is part of the Time Warner corporation. Also, at the end of season three, there will only be 40 episodes. That’s not enough for a syndication package so if the execs are on the fence about whether to renew or cancel, that could work in the show’s favor.
I suspect that TNT will renew Dallas for a fourth season but, with ratings like these, the show could certainly be cancelled.
But, what do you think? Have you grown tired of the new Dallas TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
Update: TNT has cancelled Dallas after three seasons. Details here.
Please, please continue this show. I have watched this show from the very beginning years and years ago. Please continue the saga of the Dallas group. I just love this show.
I love Dallas. Great actors and just fun to watch.
I still enjoy every episode. Bring it back!
Love the show want season 4 and more
PLEASE DONT CANCEL DALLAS ITS THE BEST TV SHOW.
Love both the old and new version – please keep it going.
I don’t think it’s as good since JR is gone. John Ross isn’t as good as villain and the story lines are a little weaker!
Renew! I love this show and never miss an episode!
I say give it another season. The show has very good writers, and I think it should last.
I would like to see dallas go for season 4 and more .
I love the dallas show .
please keep going with the show . please please
dallas needs to be renewed.how can a show get a following if it moves?it better than reality shows and most shows on tv
Renew. I’m disappointed that the show just came back on in August and is now over until who knows when. I wish this show would run as long as all the other shows. Please renew and keep it on longer than 2 months.
I certainly do not think Dallas should be cancelled! I realize everyone’s (including mine) was J.R., but , as in real life people pass away. The original series made a very wise choice in not replacing Jim Davis’ Jock Ewing character with another actor when he passed away, and there is no way they could replace Larry Hagman. Life goes on and peop;e need to realize that. I, for one am very interested in watching John Ross become who he will eventually be. Josh Henderson must have studied tons of footage of Larry Hagman as J.R. in order to hone… Read more »
#RenewDallasTNT! Dallas needs to be renewed. It has a huge following, both fans of the original and new generations. The writing is superb. The acting is sold and the drama is intense in classic Dallas style. I think TNT needs to make better choices when it comes to the airing of the season. The split season is not working. It needs to be on a night and time when it isn’t up against other competition. Also, I think the storylines need to be more centered around the Ewings…
Please give us a season 4…and 5 … and more… I love the characters, including the new ones, I think they make sense (historically) as they integrate into the Ewing clan.
But this season was too short and too fast paced, none of the plot lines were allowed to fully develop. My other complaint is how negative each development has been, there’s hardly anything positive taking place in Dallas-land.
