Last October, we reported on early plans by Warner Bros. to do a Dallas: The Next Generation-style show for sister company TNT. The rumor was that the new Dallas series would focus on the offspring of some of the original main cast — John Ross III, the son of J.R. (Larry Hagman) and Sue Ellen (Linda Gray), and Christopher, the adopted son of Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Pam (Victoria Principal).
Hagman, Gray and Duffy had reportedly been contacted to see if they’d be interested in taking part (Principal’s character was in an accident and her face was dramatically altered by plastic surgery). Hagman said that he’d be open to it but his interest really would depend on the quality script. And, not surprisingly, that was the last we heard of it. Projects like this often fall by the wayside.
Today, TNT announced plans to shoot a pilot for a new Dallas series. Here’s the info from the press release:
Dallas: Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, writer of the acclaimed film The Mambo Kings and creator/executive producer of the TV series Cane, has crafted an update of the long-running series about the Ewings of Southfork, whose betrayals, jealousies and passions have made them famous.
The story focuses on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance. This project, based upon the iconic series created by David Jacobs, comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television.
It’s unknown what ages the next generation will be in this new incarnation or if Omri Katz, the actor who played John Ross III for seven seasons and in the reunion movie, will be considered. He’s now 34 and, based on his IMDB resume, hasn’t been very active in the business for awhile.
What do you think? Are you interested in seeing a continuation of the Dallas series or should they do a reboot instead (ala CBS’ upcoming Hawaii Five-0)?
I would Love to see Dallas continue!!!!
You bet I want to see Dallas continue! It needs to be quality stuff though, not junk like it became at the end. Hey, some of the folks that just got canned in the new show Lonestar would be perfect for the offsprings of JR and Bobby. Writers-check it out!
Dallas TNG would be great! It worked for Star Trek. “Dallas” fans would love to see a well-written, dramatic, action-packed continuation of the Ewing family saga, especially is some of the original actors could participate!
Dallas was a great show, no doubt. And yes, remakes usually don’t pan out well (Melrose Place 2.0 for example). The problem? Writing and casting. If they do it right, who knows? But we won’t know until they try. I’m all for it.
I would like to see James Caviezel cast as Patrick’s son.
Eureka! I am such a “DALLAS Junkie”, I watch and rewatch the series and am very anxious to complete my set with the 19th Season. A continuing Dallas Series is just what the doctor ordered for this avid Dallas viewer. However, the casting will realllly determine if this will take off as did the original Series. Larry, Patrick, Linda, Ken, Steve, Charlene, Victoria, etc, etc, are a must in order to make this believable. The Ewing heirs (John Ross and Christopher) along with CliBarnes daughter Pamela Rebecca. etc. will carry this off provided the typecasting is just right. That’s the… Read more »
Yes am starved for some good televison loved Cane which they can. to quick but they need to stick with it!!!
Omri Katz should be back as John Ross. If not, I will not be happy, I will watch, but with disappointment. Hopefully, this script ties into the reunion movies as well. A continuation is much better than a reboot. Knight Rider and Bionic Woman failed because they were – REBOOTS, not a Continuation of…. I think it would be great for the new show to start with “Last on Dallas” and it show a basic 10 minute catch up of the show through the reunion movies. In the last movie, Sue Ellen and Bobby owned Ewing Oil, JR was the… Read more »
I enjoyed the Dallas reruns on the soap channel and wish they would bring it back.Yes I would watch this show at least in the beginning.I was to young to watch the original but in reruns it was still first runs for me.
What is wrong with Hollywood these days? They can’t seem to come up with anything new….All these remakes are useless….Knight Rider didn’t last, the Bionic Woman or 90210 didn’t either so that should tell them something! Use your imagination people!
Agreed!!! But if it happens I’m gonna watch anyway!!!! Please, oh please, tv gods let it happen…
This new Series will be an EPIC fail. Why?
The Original Dalla Show from Mid/End-70 was far from an instant success. The show had to grow on the viewers. This is hard to imagine in hindsight, but the show was not well-recepted back then. But the times were different. A studio could afford to “let the show grow on the viewers”. Something that is today just not possible anymore. Shows get cancelled the minute they premiered just because some figures were not right. This is why a Dallas-Next-Gen-Thing will fail miserably.. why am i the only one to recognize this?
Hey grandma wake up Dallas is coming back let me find your glasses and dentures because it wont be around too long(How did that knight Rider and bionic woman last)
I will defently watch I loved Dallas and would love to see the nextr chapter. Oh FYI Pam(VP) did not die she was in an accident and her face got messed up and she left town never to be seen again, but she is very much alive. I hope the orginal John Ross returns I think that will make special. I can’t wait. Here is hopeing it gets picked up.
@NEK38583: I could have sworn Pam died but, going back, I see that she had a fatal illness and wasn’t seen on the show after 1988. Whether dead or not, I guess she would have Victoria principal’s face. Thanks for the note. I’ll adjust the article.
It was no problem. Honestly, a show that runs that many years it is hard to remember every little detail. I just happen to have been a little obsesed with it for a little while. I can still remember almost , if not, everything about it.
The funny part is, VP has had a lot of work done so her face would be perfect for a post plastic surgery Pam lol
How great would it be if this worked out?!
Do anyone believe they’ll even consiter Omri Katz to retutn as JR III? Just becuase he played the role when he was younger doesn’t mean they’ll cast him. Might not even be right for how they see the character now.
This show is going to need proven (or atleast active) actors and actresses to play the roles – we’re talking the next generation of characters of one of TV’s finest night-time soaps.
I would MUCH rather see a continuation that a reboot. Reboots are cheating!
