Last year, the second season of Defiance was way down in the ratings. How will the series perform in season three — will the numbers get better or fall lower? Will this Syfy series be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season? Stay tuned.
Defiance takes place in the year 2047 — some 30 years after various alien races arrived on Earth. The town of Defiance (what used to be St. Louis) stands as an example of how humans and aliens can live harmoniously (mostly) together. The cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, Graham Greene, Jesse Rath, Trenna Keating, Anna Hopkins, Nicole Munoz, Lee Tergesen, Conrad Coates, and Nichole Galicia.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
10/16 update: Syfy has cancelled Defiance after three seasons.
Final season averages: 0.25 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.13 million total viewers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The second season of Defiance averaged a 0.46 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.56 million viewers.
What do you think? Do you like the Defiance TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
Renew 4th Season! I love this show: it moves foreward and has a good number of strong female characters.
Sad to see this end. Typical Syfy. Haven’t kept an actual Sci Fi show going for years. Dark Matter and Killjoys will probably not even make a season 2 at this rate.
Really carol your going to call it racist Or discrimination ,or some other B.S. Come on your just mad because you didn’t get painted black,or purple…it’s a tv show, get over it, hey I know lets get signs that read purple life’s matter and pull them out every time a omex gets killed, lol…give it a break what about the caucasian people being painted bright white because they weren’t a true white…is that not racist, lol…. It just amazes me What people complain or whine about when it really has nothing to do with real life, it’s entertainment …just seat back and… Read more »
I love the fact that it was full of the type race baiting tropes (et al) from the beginning but only recently is it enough to disgust people, which is just a vehicle to get the program canceled. I find the armchair “activism” tiring, especially since no one cares that individuals are actually killing each other, in real life, on the street and it has much less to do with “gun control” or race and more to do with an environment engineered to pit average folks against one another.
After watching the season finale of Defiance; I’m left with anticipation for season 4. Will Joshua Nolan turn Omeck? Will he and his daughter ever be reunited? I am filled with so many questions that only a 4th season can answer. I fear Defiance will be another Eureka! A hit show cancelled way to early. SyFy has to realize that they are not a major television network like USA, TNT, or Fox. Defiance has a cult following and I urge SyFy to renew for a fourth season if only to give viewers the answers to there many questions after viewing… Read more »
Ok so after posting my first intial comment; I read over some of the other comments posted below. Leaving me to ponder how ignorant some people truly are. Do you honestly think that a TV show filled with many actors and actresses of different color and nationality could possibly be racist? The show is about humans and other species from different planets trying to survive in one place. Not about whites, african Americans, Latin American, etc. fighting over race. Not once did I hear a derogatory remark about another race! Well not a race of Earth! So put your big… Read more »
Well said. Please don’t cancel.
I don’t think the series is racist, primarily because of the fact that the whole point of the show is the town of Defiance being pretty much a melting pot for all races instead of 1 particular race. The thing with the Omec though, I could see how that it might be racist but its not. Primary reason why is because if you really think about it each of the individual races besides humans have a particular look to it. You can quite literally relate each one to multiple types of our own races and they all act differently with… Read more »
I want Defiance back for a fourth season!!!
well, looking at the season finale – we all know the answer. Good to know you Nolan & Co.
Like previously mentioned, 18 to 25 is not the money demo. Let’s see some other numbers. This show has gotten better with each episode. The writing, acting, and effects are 2nd to none and this will make money in syndication. They are not even close to running dry on great story line. RENEW for Season 4!
This is the most racist show so far for 2015. They take a bunch of black people and paint them a dark shade of purple, but make sure you can still identify them as black, give them the click language of actual Africans, put them on a ship like the African migrants arriving at the European shores, and then have them be horrible cannibals that feed off white people. Topping all that, they make their women out to be sexual predators. Yeah, the producers might as well be wearing white hoods.
Yes, Carole, it is racist, has been from the start, but ha has been the point. Obviously, you don’t get what the show is about. The whole premise of Defiance as a town, was to put that all aside. In the Pilot, was all about. When Amanda referred to Irisa “she isn’t your daughter, she looks pure bred”. Was that not a clue what the series was about?
Oh, for the love of God, do you really think Amanda’s comment was racist? Is it now racist to say that someone doesn’t look human, they look like someone from ANOTHER PLANET? Or to tell someone their daughter doesn’t look American because they’re obviously full-blooded Chinese?
I’m with you; Amanda’s comment was not racist, nor did the show seem overwhelmingly racist in it’s first season. Xenophobia was portrayed in a believable context by the characters, but the show itself wasn’t endorsing stereotypes. Then the whole “pink skin” references started creeping in and I started frowning a bit. As carole alludes, the third season is a whole different story; I’ve been watching Defiance aghast the last several weeks. The producers of this show created a race/species (never before alluded to, which is an entirely different complaint) and exclusively cast Black actors to portray them. That’s not the… Read more »
I don’t know. The racist angle has been biting at the back of my head for this season, but since there were only two Omec really shown, there was hope for /something/ different. But with the 21 August episode, I can’t say anything but “This is KKK material.” Seriously, right out of the 1930s tropes, made for TV in 2015. I actually deleted my paid-for episodes of the show and will never watch again. So, before someone says otherwise, I’m a staunch conservative, and don’t go looking for ‘racial codes’ in entertainment. I didn’t have to here.. the writers and… Read more »
forget the racist angle, what about the incest angle? It’s been there the whole damn season.
Sadly, that too is a ‘black savage’ trope…
Tell that to Jamie Lannister.
Uhhh, *facepalm*, oh yeah, it’s ONLY a black-savage trope. There’s never been incest in ANY other race in the past whatsoever, and that’s NEVER been a trope of WHITE backwater/back-woods hillbilly rednecks or anything. -_- *complete sarcasm*
After reading these comments, I understand fully well now why Joshua Nolan chose to travel aimlessly in space on his own, in solitary, as opposed to return to the planet Earth… kind of wondering if there’s room for one more on that ship. xD
Amish, hillbillies, rednecks, past races that have practiced incest… oh yes, *sarcasm*… that’s definitely a trope that belongs ONLY to ‘black savages’. *facepalm* -_-
This show started out great… ala B.S.G. style: hopelessly outnumbered renegades. The hero & his “daughter”. HAD AMAZING POTENTIAL!!!! The writing was amateur at BEST but still a likeable story and some tension and excitement as backstabbing and plans of multiple parties collided. The writing turned south in Season 2 and has just plummeted in Season 3. It’s so hastily done and reminds me of pretty little liars at times. By that i mean if your town was under threat… that is what you would focus on, instead they have time to go to their Defiance version of Prom, to… Read more »
Unfortunately, I think the writing has a lot to do with SciFi always holding an ax over you neck, as they push sharks in tornados. Yeah, real drama there. They never invest in good series, which makes me wonder how Defiance will go.
I think the problem is that they don’t want to take the main storyline away from Nolan and Irisa, so this makes it harder for them to come up with new trouble to get them into. I mean let’s do other things like work on finding the Mayors mother, or getting Doc Yewhll a better doctors office. Bring back the gambling, drug sales, etc. It doesn’t always have to be utter destruction on it’s way. I also think they totally screwed up on how they finished out the kidnapping of the baby and others. I expected something better then what… Read more »
I had all but given up on Syfy when galactica started to go off the rails, the ridiculous name/branding change and the atrocious non science fiction programming choices. I had begun watching Defiance on a whim just to confirm my low expectations. Fast forward to today and I really have grown very fond of this show! I have to give the management at SyFy their due – they have really turned things around for the better. Defiance, killJoys and dark matter are all good. Cheers SyFy – please renew all of these shows!
It always seems like Scifi likes to shoot themselves in the foot. BSG died because they moved to Caprica, which, if you get past the first -5 episodes, really picked up and was good. Then they pulled the whole staff for the disaster of Blood and Chrome. The original was so bad with CGI, they had to scrap it and redo, and by then, the actors were contracted elsewhere. I don’t know if these 12-13 episodes are a boon or bane. The actors (ess) can do other projects, and not be tied down to one guessing. A lot to be… Read more »
I’ve grown fond of it too. Guess we are in the minority here. That’s okay… What I don’t get is why people just can’t see the show for what it is – entertainment. SciFi entertainment. With all the lives in LaLa land, you can bet they aren’t a bunch of racists. I wasn’t born yesterday, but until I saw these comments attached to this piece – the ‘race’ crap never occurred to me. Silly me thought I was fond of a show about a future where we share the planet with several species of aliens – some good, some not… Read more »
I love this show, although I believe more people would have tuned in if it were a little more family friendly. Most every one I know loves SciFi but has kids and will purposely tune into something they can all set and enjoy. I miss the days of innuendo, leaves a lot more room for character development and story, and is far less embarrassing when viewed by a family.
Depends on where you live. There was a reason some shows like BSG were on at 10pm EST . That because it was for adults. I know they try to target simple minded 18-25 demographics, but we adults have the money. And we can identify more with a Nolan, not always clean shaven, a bad ass, than some young hunks stabbing ghosts or playing vampire
.
I really like this show! Season 3 so far has some great twists. This show is VERY well written.
I pray that it gets renewed. I might actually watch some of their other shows because this one is that good! Keep up the good work Syfy and keep Defiance on the air!
I love this show! Season 3 i the best one yet. I think it will be renewed, Syfy renewed 12 Monkeys and it had same or less viewers. This show will actually be my second cable show I will actually buy the seasons on dvd/blu-ray, it is just that good. So much story to be told yet of the world, Votan etc. Thumbs up syfy! You have resurrected my sci-fi love for you after the whole Stargate-U cancellation.
