On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

I LOVED THIS SHOW PLEASE PLEASE BRING IT BACK
DETROIT 187
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is your freakin problem? That show with all the diverse plots, and people with all the ethnic back grounds, that worked in tantamount with the plots, which was refreshing for a change. You (abc) are not refreshing, I can not believe it is cancelled. You are idiots, and I hope another network picks up this show!
Low rated? I thought it was very impressive. I looked forward to it each and every week. Someone is very wrong if they don’t put this back on!! I am very Pee’d off.
This is a MUST KEEP! I cannot believe we would lose a drama like Detroit 187. For a Tim Allen ANYTHING!! Come on?
As former Detroiters now living in the Northwest, this show has been a great touchstone with our past and a true representation of the beauty and the beast which is Motown. We love the recognizable landmarks and neighborhoods appearing in each episode, and the fine character actors. Plot lines are realistic and gritty as appropriate for this type of programming. We sure hope that ABC airs the remaining episodes and returns this to its regular lineup. Please, please, please 🙂
I love Detroit 187! The character development is wonderful and I am waiting to see where we’ll go next with Fitch and the family thing. Please bring this back. There is so little quality on TV – we don’t watch “reality” shows. Give us something to invest in. You can keep Survivor, Dancing, Bachelor stuff for lining your bird cages, but we want great ensemble shows like this one.
I don’t get a lot of time with my father anymore these days but to watch a few late night shows on t.v. that we both love and talk about them like we’re both into that and nothing else. it’s the only actual part of our ‘father-daughter’ relationship we have left. Detroit 1-8-7 fell into the category of shows we both. We were left with a huge cliffhanger and we are both dying to see what will happen next. PLEASE do NOT CANCEL THE SHOW!!! Not yet anyways! I honestly can’t see why the show has such a low rating.… Read more »
Bring it back. This was one of the best shows on television.
Detroit 1-8-7 is the absolute best cop show I’ve seen for years.Love ,love, love it.So much crap on TVmade this show just such a pleasure to watch every week !
Just devastated to lose it!
Really, Seriously, I absolutely loved Detroit 1-8-7, I don’t understand why they take good shows off the air and replace them with meaningless ones, Just leave well enough alone will you…”PLEASE”
Really loved this show, can’t stand the good wife , We hope they or someone brings this show back this season. Who decides this stuff?
This is another sad commentary on the state of television! The Good Wife????? Please, If it’s not a soap like brothers and sisters or Grey’s Anatomy or a reality show then it will fail!! The exec’s who run television, and the programming, want immediate hit’s that don’t cost a lot to make! Here’s a tip switch your channel to hbo or tnt and screw the major’s because if you fall in love with a show they will cancel it anyway! Try shameless when it returns to the air! You WILL fall in love all over!!
My husband and I loved that show. The characters were so different and so entertaining. The story lines were great, too. Darn! We want it back.
Detroit 187 was one of the best new shows last season. Unfortunately, it had a really difficult time slot being up against Parenthood and The Good Wife. I watched it for the first time in the middle of the season because both of the other 2 shows were reruns. I seriously hope it returns. I think it is much better than Body of Proof which seems to be its replacement this season.
We watch very few shows on tv. This was one of the few. It was intelligent & entertaining, & the acting was outstanding.
We’re very disappointed that Detroit 187 was cancelled. It was remininscent of Homicide Life on the Streets which is another show that was on our cannot miss list. I really hope another network with more vision than ABC picks up this great drama.
