Last month, Syfy finished airing the first (and very short) season of Dominion. How did the sci-fi series do in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season or, will it be cancelled instead?
Based on characters from the Legion movie, Dominion takes place 25 years into the future. It’s after the “Extinction War” in which an army of lower angels waged a war against mankind. The show’s cast includes Christopher Egan, Tom Wisdom, Carl Beukes, Alan Dale, Roxanne McKee, Anthony Head, Luke Allen-Gale, Shivani Ghai, and Rosalind Halstead.
In June, the series debuted to 1.96 million viewers and a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Compared to other current Syfy scripted series, that was a positive premiere. Viewership dropped 26% in week two but then grew slightly in week three and leveled off.
The first season ended up averaging 1.6 million viewers and a 0.5 demo rating. That’s on par with other Syfy shows like Defiance (which was way down) and Haven. The numbers are much better than those of imported shows like Continuum and Lost Girl.
While Dominion hasn’t been a runaway hit, it has been a consistent performer for the cable channel. On the other hand, Syfy has other shows in the works so they may decide to focus on launching those. It could go either way.
Syfy’s Ted A’Zary has indicated that a decision should be coming soon.
If Dominion is renewed, showrunner Vaun Wilmott said in a press call in June that he already has story plans for at least five more seasons. If it’s cancelled, hopefully he’ll share what might have been.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Dominion TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
9/25 update: Syfy has renewed Dominion for a second season.
Anthony Head is fantastic. The rest…Meh.
Pls renew season 2 dominion
Please show season 2 of dominion
I think Dominion should be renewed. I enjoy it so much. I also think the “Alex” character should be more canny.
My family and friends really got into this show! I like how there’s not tons of nudity like Spartacus. I was afraid in the beginning that it would be. The build up of each of the sides personality and motives is incredibly mysterious and exciting. So many secrets are keeping me on the edge of my seat. If you know about the stories of angels, you will enjoy the show. It’s witty and we enjoyed the historical mythology, we can’t wait to see what new characters will come out to play. The show must go on! It has passion, mystery,… Read more »
My husband and I enjoy this series because it is different. Please renew.
Please renew…give the show a chance. There is so much junk out there. Its refreshing to have a show about angels. Too many shows about zombies and vampires. Need yo see what happens next to the archangels. Fanale left too many intriguing questions to be answered. Please bring back DOMINION!!!!
Would be fine to give it a second chance.
Renewal, the dam show
Liked it but don’t care for the actor playing the Chosen One.
renew please
I watched it because it seemed to have promise early on ( It’s no wonder they had a great premier….. They really promoted it well). By the end of the season I was left pretty underwhelmed. Part of the reason is there’s really nobody I care about succeeding in the series. By the end I kind of felt they were all worth killing off if it came to that.
When your hero’s aren’t really part of the solution but part of the problem, then there’s really nothing to get behind. That makes it pretty boring
But “black/white” characters are boring. A flawed hero is something that most people can better relate to, and makes for a more realistic story.
Yes, but this hero just didn’t make me care…..not sure if it’s more the writers fault or the director. Somehow he came across hallow instead of someone who would eventually save the world. Gabriel came across as a better prospect to save the world than he did One other thing that seems too strange both with this show and Supernatural ……I don’t believe in religion for the most part, but was raised in a Catholic family. This idea that somehow angels who are supposed to be pure loving beings have suddenly become such evil creatures just seems beyond probability if… Read more »
But you’re forgetting that Dominion (and even Supernatural) is a fantasy (the angels). It’s not a series meant to be based on any one religious belief. It’s no different than someone making a movie about an ‘evil’ Santa. It’s just a different interpretation of angels. Interpreting something differently, does not automatically make it wrong.
No show with magical creatures makes sense. Why is only shows that include something religious get complaints about not making sense? Then again it’s usually from religious people, who really believe in magical creatures.
Ronald,
With all due respect, this is not the case with this show. It’s based on the original movie “Legion” starring Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, and Kevin Durand. And speaking as someone who’s familiar with the writer of Dominion, I can assure you that he’s not one of those “religious people” that you’re talking about.
Not sure why this story isn’t immediately identifiable to all SyFy fans. He had to start out low and rise up. He doesn’t instantly have all the answers. He is learning, growing, becoming what he is meant to be. He’s a 25 year old man who just found out the weight of the world, and possible extinction of his race, is on his shoulders. How do you not feel for that? How do you not feel for the guy who is doing everything right and is still not getting the girl, and has reason to mistrust those around him. He’s… Read more »
Regarding the chosen one character, I can respect that – it’s all a matter of opinion, of course. But I feel that the angels aren’t “good” or “evil” in this show, IMO. It’s more of an inner struggle to understand what God wants from them. I understand what you’re saying, completely; but when it comes down to it, it’s just entertainment, ya? Serious religious beliefs aren’t necessarily a part of it. 🙂 I enjoy how the angels are changing and growing, rather than staying flat characters with no real depth. I’m really hoping that we can all see this story… Read more »
Now I can agree with you about Gabriel, but that’s because none of the characters are portrayed as black or white. They are all various shades of grey. Michael, Gabriel, and Uriel, all want the same thing, but have different ways of going about it, each believing theirs to be the best way. To me, that’s believable. Maybe Michael is wrong to have put his faith in Alex. Gabriel could be on the right path to bringing God back. Maybe he would return just before the last human falls, or maybe his return would be after mankind has been eliminated… Read more »
Please renew ! I love rogue angels.
Renew it!
Would be very disappointed if it were not renewed
