There won’t be a third season of Extant but this isn’t the end of Halle Berry’s relationship with CBS. The summer series has been cancelled but Berry is now executive producing a legal drama that’s in development for the network.
Extant, began when astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry) returned to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. For season two, the cast includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Pierce Gagnon, Grace Gummer, and David Morrissey.
The first season of Extant underperformed for the network and averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.15 million viewers. They brought it back but a lot of changes were made to the series. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to help. The second season, which concluded last month, averaged a 0.7 in the demo with 4.70 million.
Despite the big declines in the ratings, there was talk of moving forward with a third season, mostly because of Berry’s star power. Ultimately the decision was made to end the show.
“I am so proud of what we accomplished on Extant,” said Berry. “This season seemed such a natural place to end Molly’s journey that I, along with CBS, felt it best served the story to leave it there. It was my first foray into episodic television, and I’m excited to continue my relationship with CBS, producing more compelling stories through my 606 Films production banner.”
In a statement, CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller, said, “CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the ‘Extant’ story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion. Extant’ played an important role in expanding CBS’s lineup of original scripted programming in the summer. We are proud of the show’s success on the network, as well as its popularity on Amazon Prime Video. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series, and look forward to working with her on our next project together.”
That next project is called Legalease and will center on a biracial lawyer from Chicago who follows a case to New Orleans. She ends up partnering with a good ol’ boy attorney while working in a biased justice system. It’s unclear if Berry will star in the new show or stay behind-the-scenes.
What do you think? Did you like the Extant TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season? Which season did you prefer?
Enjoyed it so much here I am trying to find out when season 3 would finally appear, only to find it had been canceled. Bummer. Thanks, seems like you could have done something for the 5 or 6 million viewers that didn’t just like it, we loved it.
Why does it seem like anything that deals with aliens is cancelled right away season two was way better the season one of extant was so looking forward to season 3 wow another disappointment in life as well as helix , V and defiance that show was the best ahh what will you replace it with ?? Oh let me guess more stupid reality tv !
Why do American TV channels always cancel the best quality shows such as Extant, Caprica, Helix etc? If these were UK shows they’d be kept running for as long as the public were enjoying them.
I cannot believe its over ! I really don’t understand what people watching whole day if such good shows are cancelling !!!
LOVED THE SHOW! I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT SEASON!
Extremely disappointed that Extant ended. We loved the show and felt it was a good story. Why do they always take off the good shows!!!!!
This show was smart and good. Berry is just great. Ethan is incredible, everyone and the script was good. Too bad, same thing happened to Serenity and other shows that push the future but are not supportive of the cash flow demanded by small-minded executives..dare to be great!
CBS does not have the guts to stick with a show like this. CBS is not big enough to put its own pants on. CBS says, ” O gee, there’s a little trouble with this show; gee, I don’t know… O gee, we just can’t AFFORD this. O gee, better cancel, gotta pay the bills, and gee, you just can’t take prestige to the baaank.” Wusses.
I just found Extant via Amazon Prime (which I do not prefer over Netfix). It is now 2016 and on the news Trump is screaming about immigration issues … who should be allowed to stay here and who should not. I actually thought that season two of Extant would tackle this powerful issue more deeply : a mirror of today… that is, the possible role of “aliens – illegal or not” as a contribution to our society or eradicated. There was also the issue of Extant’s Aliens being “Hybrids” and being directly mistreated while confronting issues of inequality and institutional… Read more »
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE SHOW AND UTTERLY DISAPPOINTED THAT IT’S NOT COMING BACK!! Not sure why it didn’t do well in the ratings… just goes to show you that you can’t go by them!!!!
I loved the series and very disappointed that it was cancelled .
I ordered the firestick and found Extant as my first TV series to watch and it was great. My family and I, all 3 of us, sat and watch both seasons for 2 days straight and we were anticipating the 3rd season to find out from this article that it had been cancelled. I have even recommended this TV series to others. I couldn’t wait to see what Taalor would do that he is now freely walking the earth…so much suspense left on the table. Oh well, I will be watching season 3 should Halle and CBS decide’s to conclude.
I was hoping Extant was coming back for season 3. The series wasn’t really resolved.
Sad, when a show this good get canceled, we wonder why? Ratings were good show was even better.
Season 3 needs to come out already. I can’t believe Taylor put his self in a body omg. Season 3 plzzzzz
