The Foyle’s War TV show on ITV was cancelled after eight seasons, because of rising production costs. Creator Anthony Horowitz tells Digital Spy he was ready for the British detective drama series to end. In the US, some seasons of Foyle’s War aired on PBS. The complete Foyle’s War TV series is available for streaming on Acorn.TV (but Acorn‘s series numbering is confusing).
Foyle’s War is set during and after World War II, with the eighth and final season set in 1947. Michael Kitchen stars as detective Christopher Foyle. The Doyle’s War TV series cast also includes: Honeysuckle Weeks, Ellie Haddington, Tim McMullan, Daniel Weyman, Jeremy Swift, Rupert Vansittart, and Hermione Gulliford.
From Digital Spy:
“I’ve written 26* two-hour films for that show,” [Horowitz] said. “17 years of my life have been devoted to Foyle’s War.
“It had to come to an end sometime. We went from 1940 all the way through to 1947 – and I told countless true stories about the war. I felt that there were no more true stories to tell about that period, I’d sort of covered pretty much every area.
“I’m sad to see it gone, but it’s still out there and people are still watching it. That’s one of the wonders of the digital age.”
*The complete Foyle’s War TV series episode count is 28.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Foyle’s War TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed?
There really isn’t much more for me to add that hasn’t been already said. Great cast! Great production! Outstanding story lines!! There simply is nothing second rate about Foyle’s War. One could watch this series many times and enjoy it like it was the first time aired. Unlike so many other shows Foyle’s War maintained it’s high quality from beginning to end. This series was a treasure. I am very lucky to have stumbled upon it.
One of the best shows ever. I have watched them multiple times and am a huge fan. So sad to see it end. Maybe after Mr.Horowitz takes a break he and Acorn can revisit. Remarkably well done.
I learned so much about that era from Foyle’s War that was always captivating. The development of the characters was beautiful, and the acting was superb! I did not care for the continuation into the Cold War time frame. I would have loved more stories about England’s recovery and i missed Foyle’s son, too.
I find it difficult to believe that out of the 7 years of 1940-1947, only 26 stories were available to be told, that nothing else happened that warranted detection…I adored the show, the characters, the actors, the ambiance…I was born in 1946 and loved the idea of seeing what life was like for the world leading up to my birth. My biological dad was IN that war, sent home in August, 1945, then reassigned to Japan where he was killed before I was born… The series could pick up where it left off…I know that Foyle continued being a detective,… Read more »
I find a genuine comfort level and respect for the character of Christopher Foyle as played by Michael Kitchen. if not in Foyle’s War, I would be just as satisfied with Kitchen playing a similar role. Such fine character traits do exist in the real world. We need to see them, know them, to be reassured with characters that are just as “fine.”
I already submitted a comment but haven’t seen it posted yet!! Please don’t cancel FOYLE’S War!! Put together a new writing team and bring it through the Cold War, troubles with the IRA, so many things to write about!!
PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE CONTINUE FOYLE’S WAR!! It’s the best show on TV!! For heavens sake if Mr. Horowitz doesn’t want to write for it anymore I’m certain there are other equally talented writers who can carry the story forward!! PLEASE!!
best show ever….love,,,love,,,love
I love Foyle’s War…is there any chance it can be renewed?
Shame on cancelling one of the best shows on TV
Another fine program cancelled…what a shame.
Another show which stimulated the mind disappears….what a shame.
I wish it had not been cancelled. My family enjoyed it very much.
My family adores Doyle’s War on Netflix. We intend to buy the series and watch it over and over, but not before we put the kettle on. Must watch with a cup of tea. Lots of love from Virginia, USA! :o) Oh, and THANKS!!
He may have been ready to end it, but we fans weren’t !
Whatever his new series is, I wish him the best, but I have no interest in it.
I liked Foyle’s War and wished we could have more interesting shows like it on the air. Unfortunately the trend is not going that way. I enjoyed it cause it gave a bit of the lives of the characters and continued on after WW11. I understand that Foyle had to retire but could it not have continued on with the same premise but new characters?
