Well, it’s official. FOX has cancelled Thursday night drama Gracepoint after one season. There won’t be a second season on the network but there seems to be a small chance that it could continue elsewhere.
Gracepoint begins when a young boy is found dead on an idyllic beach in the small northern California town of Gracepoint. The tragedy and ensuing media frenzy soon turns neighbor against neighbor as the police try to figure out what happened. The cast includes David Tennant, Anna Gunn, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull, Madalyn Horcher, Kendrick Sampson, Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver, Kevin Rankin, Sarah-Jane Potts, Stephen Louis Grush, Kevin Zegers, Jessica Lucas, and Nikolas Filipovic.
The ratings for Gracepoint started out low and got worse as the season progressed. For whatever reason, many viewers just weren’t interested in the series — despite being assured that the mystery would be solved by the end of the 10 episodes.
With such poor ratings, it’s no surprise that FOX has cancelled the series. TVLine has confirmed it and actually, the network had already quietly told viewers it wasn’t coming back. At the end of a preview, the final episode of the season was called the “series finale.”
While Gracepoint won’t be returning to FOX, showrunner Dan Futterman has hopes that the Shine America production company will find an alternative home for the series. In a recent interview, he said, “You know as much as I do at this point. Shine, there’s been some changes at the company and so I don’t know what the intention is to do with the programming that they’ve got. [Co-showrunner Anya Epstein] and I would love the opportunity, but we don’t know any more than you do.”
What do you think? Would you like to Gracepoint return for a second season? Was FOX justified in cancelling this show? Would you watch season two on another channel?
Gracepoint was a phenomenal show. Brooding, dark, beautiful and at times humorous – I loved every episode. The story moved along very well and each episode stood on its own. Its sad to me that a show this good didnt get more attention. I would love to see a 2nd season somewhere – only with the same cast…
One of the better show on TV this season and was the only one I made a point to be sure to watch each week. Acting may not have been the most stellar but the story was a bit unique (I never saw Broadchurch and likely never will). This show had interesting shots and actually made you think. It didn’t force feed you the purp like most one hour shows need to do. Basically you never will know if what you do might wind up under the microscope do to some other unrelated activity, like what happened on this show.… Read more »
LOVED THE SHOW
They really should give this series another chance; I think it could do very well with season 2. Bring it back
I loved Gracepoint & could hardly wait each week to see if I could figure out who killed Danny! The way each character’s movements & possible motives kept me intrigued clear to the end. I’m sad to see it’s over & would love for another network to pick up the ‘miniseries’ premise & perhaps do a different murder in another town?
My husband and I loved this show. You had to watch it every week, because it was a real mystery and you had to watch to keep up with the story line-which was excellent. the acting was excellent also, and so believable. We are tired of all the reality shows and just plain stupid, dumb story lines of other shows with all it killing, shooting and swearing and unbelievable crap. Please bring it back
Let’s rally fans and get this series to another network who is worthy. It seems like all the good shows have been cut for awful dumb reality shows or just plain comedic junk.
I again hope we can do this for Gracepoint like we did for Longmire.
Making this show just shows how desperate Fox are to have a few hit shows again. Rather than trying to tweak it to attune it to American audiences though, they just lazily bought Broadchurch lock, stock and barrel, even taking in one of the British leads without auditioning anyone for the part and then saddling him with a bizarre American accent. To make it worse they used the same directors so the two shows were essentially clones for most of the time. It is frustrating as there is a decent show in the mess somewhere but Fox just couldn’t be… Read more »
I disagree Arlene. I thought is was well acted. In fact it was a little easier to follow because of the American accent. Tennet is a fantastic actor and did his accent superbly.
Ann Gunn was as good as she was on Breaking Bad.
The show was just great TV entertainment.
agreed!
I really liked this series. I appreciate a mystery that plays out over time, giving you a chance to get to know the characters and experience the twists and turns that occur in a real investigation.
I really liked ‘The Killing’ also … for the same reasons. I thought both series were far superior to most detective shows that wrap everything up in a bow each episode.
Of course, it seems TV shows have become ‘low attention span theater’, catering to the brain dead masses. What a pity!
Yes, Gracepoint was touted as a 10 episode mini series but the writers did give that little hook in the closing scene that implied there could be more to provide. While it is certainly better to know what the intended duration is rather than to just suddenly drop the story often with an incomplete ending, it is so sad to lose a very intelligent, well presented series. There is so much drivel on the tube that quality presentations are hard to find. I hope to see these actors in other presentations in the near future.
I really enjoyed Gracepoint! I was very sad when I just read that it is not coming back. I would love to see a second season. I looked forward to watching it every time I had to record it.
“For whatever reason, many viewers just weren’t interested in the series”
How about the acting was bad, the writing was worse, the show was so boring I would rather have watched paint dry. couldn’t even make through episode one. and it appears a lot of people agreed with me.
even horrible shows usually have a blip up for the last episode or two as some people tune in or tune back in just to see who the killer is, but this show was so bad, that did not happen.
I disagree! Blan people see blan things!
Maybe there wasn’t enough violence and sex for some people. I loved the show. David Tennant was outstanding and the story kept me interested with good writing and interesting characters.
First, “Gracepoint” was a reworking of the British series “Broadchurch,” which also starred David Tennant. The BBC has already announced that there would be a second series of that.
Second, “Gracepoint” was complete in and of itself, so doesn’t need a follow-up.
I would think a lot of people had already seen the original, so wouldn’t be that interested in the copy. Which, BTW, was produced by the same people. It may be possible that if the British sequek does well, Fox might give a second series a try, but otherwise it wouldn’t seem sensible.
This was the most unnecessary show on American TV in a long time. It wasn’t bad, it was just . . . why?
I agree. If I hadn’t seen Broadchurch first I would have probably enjoyed this a lot more. Despite the “different” ending, which was NOT NEARLY different enough, it wasn’t bad. I really don’t see the point in remaking a show that aired so recently. 10 years down the road, maybe. Why couldn’t FOX just get the rights to air Broadchurch as it is.
TOTALLY agree with everything you said Anne!
Perhaps not everyone has seen Broadchurch.
Gracepoint was promoted as a Mini Series with 10 episodes which means that it would end solving the murder of the little boy which it did solve the case. Gracepoint had excellent acting and the story was excellent. The story did make you wonder who actually did it. Gracepoint was not a series in the sense it would continue. For the low ratings I’m surprised as I could not wait for then next episode and to the ending on who it was. So I think you should get your facts straight when writing this article. If I’m wrong, I would… Read more »
The miniseries, limited series label was to indicate the story would wrap up in 10 episodes, and not extended to 13 or 22 episodes this season. It had no bearing on any subsequent seasons. If Gracepoint had good ratings, FOX would have ordered a second season (a new crime with 10 new episodes next fall) in a heartbeat.
Why would it continue? It was mini-series/one season special event, just like it was when it was Broadchurch on BBC. They solved the crime and it was over. It was a good enough story, although it was much better as Broadchurch. Fox should never have made this show, but once they did, they just stuck it up there and abandoned it. Fox is declining rapidly.
