After its debut, it looked like the new Hawaii Five-0 was one of those rare animals — a revival of a classic TV show that didn’t crash and burn immediately. Still, the series isn’t turning out to be as big a success as CBS might like you to believe. The series started off very strong in the ratings but has been losing steam every week.
Hawaii Five-0 debuted on September 20th to a 3.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that the networks care about) and 14.2 million total viewers. In week two, those numbers dropped 8% but that really isn’t bad for a new show. In week three, they dropped another 3%. This past Monday, they dropped a whopping 11%, hitting a low of a 3.1 rating and 10.7 million viewers.
The CBS series still places first in its timeslot, most closely challenged by Castle. That ABC series registered a 2.7 and 10.66 million viewers this week, up 4% from last week. If Hawaii 5-0’s downward trend continues, it won’t be long before the show loses in the timeslot and could end up in danger by the end of the season. For now, it’ll almost certainly get an order for nine more episodes bringing it to a full season. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see.
Interestingly, last year’s timeslot holder, CSI: Miami was doing much better at this point in the season. After four episodes, it was averaging a 4.1 in the demo and 13.72 million while Hawaii Five-0 is currently averaging a 3.5 rating and 12.47 million. Perhaps CBS should have left Miami in its old timeslot.
What do you think? Will Hawaii Five-0 end up surviving past this season? Was it a mistake for CBS to boot CSI: Miami out of its established timeslot?

I like it and will continue to watch. Liked the original a lot, too. My problem is that the transition between the old and new was horrible and made no sense, especially with the two main actors. Also, a Wo Fat-type is needed. Time slot is bad because of Monday nite FB. Considering all this, the show is doing OK, but needs to mature and settle in to what it wants to be. Too early to judge harshly.
Seems to me they are trying very hard to make this a campy show and it should be more serious. Not every show can pull off the NCIS humor (and sometimes that gets to be a bit much) but the constant funny one liners are a drag on the acting talent. Give these actors a good script. I agree with just about everything everyone else has written. I COULD like it, but there’s no depth! AO does deserve a good show. Moonlight was good and his appearance in Criminal Minds was really good. Phase out the funny stuff and when… Read more »
I like this show. Hawaii 5-0 and Chase are two of the best action shows on TV. I am so tired of CSI (the Las Vegas one) – too much blood and guts! H5-0 is a keeper in my book…
I think the show needs new writers. The characters need to be a little harder. Especially Alex (McGarrett). The show started out on the right foot. But, the shows are starting to feel more mechanical, more phony. Not true to life. The story lines are very weak. McGarrett’s character along with the others needs to be sharpened. There are some dark secrets needing to be found out. What’s going on with the evidence found by his sister in the tool box. Explore a little more. I love Alex O’Loughlin. Not just because of his looks, but I truly believe given… Read more »
CSI Miami is better and needs to be on Monday night. Being on Sunday night, it gets butchered because of football runovers.
This show started out awesome. Great action, great character introductions and IMO a great looking cast. Save for the Mullet-mobile Chevy Camaro that seems to get more shots than the cast (annoying, too much film for such an ugly car) and it was at least palatable if not the coolest new show for the 2010 season. Unfortunately, it seems the real premise behind the show is like the Transformers movie disasters. A blatantly obvious commercial for Government Motors and a 60 minute spot for the above mentioned Mullet-mobile. It just seems like the story lines and plots got less interesting… Read more »
I was hopeing for more out of this remake like many of us. Can’t quite pin it down but something is missing to make this show nearly as strong as the original. I think better story lines and stronger acting has to come into play or it’s by by to 5-0.
The show is ok so far, but it strays to far from the original for my taste. I am going to continue to watch for at least the rest of the season out of repect for the original show but I don’t know about after that.
Should have left CSI Miami in this time slot.
Hawaii Five-O 2010 needs a serious recasting of most of the main characters. Otherwise, the show is going to die a quick death. It sucks as it is. Stopped watching 15 minutes into the second episode.
Can is just like his Dad, which is stiff, cocky, and out of touch.
McGarette character is totally lame and phony.
Why does the Asian guy have to be the thecae geek?
Too stereo typed.
I hate the high speed aeria photography.
And, everyone knows the is no place to drive you mustang 90 mph on the north shore!?
Only the music is first rate, and it’s 40 years old.
I think this show is terrific…great story lines, good acting, plus scenes of the island. I think it’s a winner. Book it, Dan-O.
I like it!
I am losing interest in the show. I waited so long for this show because I like Alex O. Scott Caan proved to be the acutal star of this show in my opinion. Grace Park has her moments but I can take or leave her. Daniel K is not given a big enough part in my opinion. From the previews this week looks boring so I will watch a little then switch to Castle. Last week was ok the highlight being the bed scene but that’s about it. I think this show will definately go the full season but not… Read more »
I’m losing interest as well. Writer need to step up their game. What are you guys getting paid for? Alex is handsome. But handsome does always work!!
What a disappointment this show has been. Why even bother with the Hawaii 5-0 name? Has nothing to do with the original series beyond the character names and the greatly shortened theme song beginnig. The writing is juvenile, insipid. The cast is weak. The soap opera undercurrents are dumb and annoying. The Villains are cardboard. Please please no more of the stupid kid and divorced dad BS. Please shoot this thing and put it out of its misery. Jack Lord must be rolling over in his grave.
