A little over a week ago, NBC decided to cancel their new medical drama, Heartbeat. As a result of the cancellation, tonight’s episode is the TV show’s last. Was NBC justified in cancelling the series or should there be season two?
Set at the fictional St. Matthew’s Hospital, Heartbeat follows a cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George), as she tries to juggle her personal and professional lives. She eagerly fights authority, particularly when it comes to her patients’ health and well-being. The rest of the cast includes Dave Annable, Don Hany, Joshua Leonard, Jamie Kennedy, D.L. Hughley, Shelley Conn, Maya Erskine, and J. Louis Mills.
Heartbeat debuted on March 22nd. It followed an episode of NBC’s highly-rated series The Voice and drew a 1.39 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.30 million viewers.
Heartbeat moved to its regular Wednesday night timeslot the next evening and the ratings saw a dramatic dip, falling to a 0.89 rating with 5.16 million. The numbers have kept dwindling downward. Last week’s penultimate episode drew a 0.67 in the demo with just 3.86 million.
Those kinds of numbers are just too low for NBC to justify renewing the series so the cancellation certainly wasn’t a surprise. The peacock network is already busy promoting their new drama series for the fall. It remains to be seen if they will do any better.
But, what do you think? Did you like the Heartbeat TV show? Was NBC justified in cancelling it or should the network have given the series more time and a second season?
This garbage could not have ended quick enough for me. What a cheesy soap opera! It insulted my intelligence. Too many horny nitwits!
Then why are you watching it in this day and age of hundreds of channels? change your channel and let those of us that want to watch it, watch it
I LOVE this show! It’s awesome and it’s my FAVORITE one! I have looked forward to EVERY new episode to see what the story is going to be about and what kind of crazy things Alex gets into! This is one of those shows where I watch the episodes quite a few times because I enjoy them so much. I really hope another channel / network enjoyed this unique show enough to fight to get it and keep it going. (Critics shouldn’t have an influence of what shows are cancelled because EVERYBODY’S opinion matters.). Thank you to everybody that worked… Read more »
I Really like this show! Seriously, they cancel GOOD shows! NOT HAPPY!
So so sad to hear show being cancelled. Love this show. Love the dynamics between the actors. Medical info presented is truer than you know. Can we petition to have it continue ?! And as far as ratings, how do they count those of us who watch it later on xfinity vs watching it live? Some of us have to work evenings 🙁
Excellent show. Love the characters, great writing, entertaining. So much better than most all other shows on TV. PLEASE reconsider and bring it back!!
I am a huge fan of medical dramas as I work in the medical field. This show is by far the best in TV right now! The problem NBC has is it does not allow time for their shows to gain that fan base! This show has great characters with chemistry. A perfect mixture of drama, emotions, and comedy! NBC is completely being premature with cancelling after only one 10 show season!
This show was not only interesting and hysterical, it was unique. It was emotional. The characters were well-cast, the story was bold and breathtaking. NBC made a mistake in cancelling the show, and hopefully they come to realize that.
This was a wonderfully written and acted program, with each week leaving you wondering how was this EVER going to be resolved. It made you THINK, which not much of regular TV does. Let’s hope Susan, or whoever, has the forsite to shop this around and bring on the 2nd year. Defib anyone??
This show is/was home to fantastic writing/stories, and acting well above many programs on NBC, SVU to name one. It had a rhythm from week to week based on the great characters and their development. I can only hope Susan, or someone at NBC has the force to shop this program around, and keep it alive. Defib, anyone?????
Wow! Finally a good drama with plenty of humor and dramatic twists & turns with each episodes! Not following the status quo of ordinary drama at all. The out of nowhere moments of hilarity in the midst of sometimes tragic drama is unique and capitivating. Why would this series be given a second chance to expand its audience? Loved the entire season!
I love this show and im so sad that its ending!!

I have never requested a show do not be cancelled
