Last night, we reported that Hallmark Channel had abruptly “parted ways” with longtime Home & Family co-host Mark Steines. The cable channel’s official statement was a bit cryptic: “Today Hallmark Channel has parted ways with Mark Steines as the co-host of the network’s lifestyle series Home & Family. We are extremely grateful to Mark for his incredible work and wish him all the best success in his future endeavors.”
Given that Steines was immediately removed from the Home & Family site, more than a few people wondered if there was more to the story. Today, Hallmark made it clear that the channel had no issues with Steines. Management wants to take the series in a different direction and Steines was not part of that change.
Here’s today’s statement: “Shows evolve and change all the time. Mark has been an instrumental part of Home & Family for the past 6 years, and we are extremely grateful for his incredible work and leadership. We truly wish Mark all the best in his future endeavors.”
According to Deadline, Steines was blindsided by Hallmark’s plans and was told he was off the show only after he finished taping Thursday’s show (on Wednesday).
According to a representative of Steines, he was let go for “creative reasons”. The rep noted, “We had had nothing but positive reviews and feedback from Hallmark for the entirety of the time he has been on the show, including this year.” It is believed that Steines still had time left on his contract so it wasn’t about contract negotiations.
Steines’ co-host, Debbie Matenopoulos, fought back tears as she delivered the news to viewers at the end of today’s show. She was surrounded by seven contributors on the show’s couch.
Welcome back, everybody. So, I’m here to share some news. And the family has joined me because we truly are a family here. Now, although we had a great show, we have a hard announcement to make. We have a very hard announcement to deliver. Our dear friend, our very good friend, and my wonderful co-host for years, Mister Mark Steines, is no longer with Home & Family.
He has been an amazing friend to all of us here at Hallmark Channel, the cast, the crew and a wonderful friend to all of you at home as well. And we are grateful to Mark, and we want to thank him from the bottom of our hearts for six of the most incredible years that he has had here hosting this incredible show that, he helped build. He really did.
He’s been here from the beginning and a lot of this show has Mark’s handprint on it, so we support him in everything he does in the future, his future endeavors. We will miss him dearly and we will think about him fondly and often and we thank you all at home for your kindness and understanding and your support and for being part of our family every day.
Thank you so much, everyone. Thank you for joining us and we’ll see you back here on Monday.
This isn’t the first time that a Home & Family co-host has been suddenly dropped from the program’s “family”. Matenopoulos’ predecessor, Cristina Ferrare, was quietly removed from the program nearly two years ago. She had theoretically been on vacation for two weeks before it was announced that she was simply no longer with the program. This led many viewers to assume that Ferrare was sick (which was not the case) and led to a lot of hard feelings from viewers toward her replacement.
It’s unclear if Steines will be replaced. On Monday’s show, Matenopoulos will be joined by guest host James Denton, one of the stars of Hallmark’s Good Witch series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Steines has been fired by Hallmark? Will you continue to watch the Home & Family TV show? If they wanted to make a change, could Hallmark have handled this in a better way?
I have been watching H&F for years. It is about the only show left that has any creative interests; i.e. crafts and DIY’s I was very upset when Christina Ferrare was let go. I am equally as upset about the recent firing of Mark Steines. After Christina’s firing, my personal feelings are that Debbie M was being slid into the top spot. And this is exactly what has happened. I will not be watching as much. The show has lost it’s homey and friendly “glue” in letting go of Christina and now Mark.
When you let Christina go I stopped watching the show up until about 5 months ago, now Mark!!!!! You should change the name of the show because the way you treat your so called family is totally absurd. Your show is so inconsistent your viewers have no idea what to expect so I ask myself….Why get attached again??? So with that being said, Sorry you have lost this viewer forever!!!
I having been enjoying Mark and Debbie for quite a while now. I even tape when I won’t be home to watch it. I love, love, love this show and Debbie and Mark made it super. I love the whole team and how they handle things. Both (TOGETHER) made the show. I cannot believe you don’t go by “if it ain’t broke, DON’T fix it. It is a crying shame how you big wigs can take someone who has given you many many viewers and just throw them out like they are trash. It probably does not bother you one… Read more »
I am re thinking weather I will remain a fan. This not the first time they just drop hosts and don’t give any reasons. These actions are not encouraging or uplifting.
I am so saddened about this “abrupt” change. I miss Christina sooo much too!! They added class to the show. Very disappointed—and again, if it is such a close “family”, why does this continue to happen—
First Christina now Mark. What is in play here? This show always totes how they are all family; well I wouldn’t want to be a part of this family. Whatever happened to looking out for family and watching their back? Great way to treat someone who has given this network so much.
Not sure if I will tune in anymore. Very disappointed.
First you let Christina go (?!!), now you let Mark go with little explanation. Well you lost me for over a year after you got rid of Christina. Sorry you have lost this viewer forever!!! The shows lately just are not that great.
Mark and Christina made the show! Sorry you have lost this viewer!
I quit watching when Cristina was ‘let go’. Surprised to hear about Mark. Sorry about it for him, but karma is well … you know. I don’t think he handled his friendship with Cristina at all well when she was gone from the show. but I don’t watch it anyway, so …
1st Cristina out with a warning now Mark. Like Debbie but goodbye Hallmark
I will no longer be watching Hallmark. Mark was the highlight of the show. Not at all interested.
Hallmark is losing its wholesome image through actions like this. How can the decision to fire people that are definitely doing a good job be justified as doing what is right. I guess the wholesome image of the network is only an image without substance. Your desire for happy endings on all your shows has been tarnished–you may as well broadcast the trashy movies and shows of other networks.
I am no longer interested in watching the home and family show. Mark was an integral piece of the show and it just isn’t the same without him…..no matter who you put in….it was his show!!! The hosts made a good team!! You would have to rename it and change the whole format and then maybe you might get some of the viewers back…..but I doubt it. You pulled the rug out from underneath your viewers and it is over no one wants to watch any more!
I will never watch this show again. Debbie is a big fake, they should had of got rid of her instead of Christina and Mark.
Maria Perdomo I’m so dissapointed knowing Mark is no longer co-host of Home and family. I used to love to watch him and Christina, now there is no reason to continue watching the show! Bye Hallmark.
I can not believe a company that represents family values would treat anyone the way you did. Debbie is okay , but not without Mark. I think this is a real mistake.
