PBS just aired the final episode of Home Fires in the U.S., but is that really it for the TV show? Recently, executive producers Simon Block and Francis Hopkinson spoke with RadioTimes about the cancellation of the UK series.
The period drama, which aired on ITV in the UK, follows the members of the Women’s Institute during World War II. The cast includes Francesca Annis, Daisy Badger, Mark Bazeley, Leanne Best, and Samantha Bond. The show was cancelled last year after only two seasons.
In the interview, Block said he was surprised by ITV‘s decision to cancel Home Fires:
It’s always difficult to gauge how things are going to go so you don’t quite know what the criteria for whether something’s going to carry on or not. It had held its audience, it had won its slots, figures were strong as far as I was told so in that sense I guess it was a surprise in that it went against what we were expecting based on the criteria we were told things get judged by.”
Nevertheless, Block says he’s been touched by the efforts of fans to bring the show back:
I’ve been blown away. When the news came out that it had been cancelled, suddenly everything went ballistic and you really get a sense of how passionately people feel about it. That was really a bit of a shock.”
And what about another season? Hopkinson says they are actively looking for options to bring back Home Fires:
It’s something we’re talking about. I think the audience profile was very good – upmarket and female – and that’s an audience that a lot of advertisers want so there is some interest.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Home Fires? Do you want the show to come back for another season?
Would love to see the show for another season, but if not, PLEASE a series finale! I was on the edge of my seat hoping Pat would leave her husband for that handsome Czech officer!
Totally agree. I was hoping the Czech officer was going to clean his clock! The husband should have been killed in the war….
Please bring back to wonderful show. It had such quality and the characters were so rich and complex. lovely show, wonderfully written and the portrayals were spot on. Please bring back Home Fires…….
Please bring this back. So many people I work with were so disappointed by the ending. We were so into the story and it just dropped with everything hanging. We love Home Fires
Yes I do want it to continue, it is a very interesting series
Absolutely I am a fan of “Home Fires” and was very disappointed in the cancellation of the television series. Each character is so ‘real’, and I don’t know anyone who hasn’t ‘bonded’ with each and every one of them. It would be wonderful to see, at least one more (and maybe more) season on television with the same strong characters. Many of us just want to see their stories play out.
Absolutely not. Cancellation is not an option and I would like to see more season. I will be damned if this show is cancelled when it does.
No! This is such a great show, you must continue. I need Pat to leave that SOB and find happiness with her soldier! To many loose ends…
It’s cruel to leave us where the season ended – I want to know what happened! I read where the writers had written half the next season already. If they can’t bring back the show, we need to know what they wrote…. But, please, someone pick up this show.
“Home Fires” was a great series in every way and I was extremely disappointed when it was cancelled. The writing, the actors, and the production values were all first class. More please!
Home Fires is one of the best series my husband and I ever watched with a fabulous cast and story line. It was head and shoulders above the mindless junk shown on the major U.S. networks. It was a show that adults could appreciate and each episode left us wanting more! There is no legitimate or plausible explanation as to why this series was cancelled — whoever the person was that decided that should be axed! BRING BACK HOME FIRES AS A SERIES!!
I was visiting a friend in London when I read about my favorite PBS’s series, Home Fires, having been cancelled. It was devastating news. Please bring this extraordinary, perfectly Wonderful show back! We need Quality programming in this world today!
I loved the show as did my friends! I am so disappointed in PBS for allowing this to be cancelled after two seasons. Leaving us hanging at the end was awful. Please bring this back!!
One of the best written TV dramas I’ve seeen. The characters became full-blooded individuals, who drew this viewer into their world. This was indeed film as narrative literature. I hope to see not just one, but three more seasons.
Loved the show particularly the period it was about. Each of the actors did a tremendous job. Please bring it back!
We LOVED this show and were very sorry to hear about it stopping. Of course, we’ll watch more if Netflix or anybody else picks it up; would be very exciting news! Fingers crossed!
