Did you see the last episode of The Leftovers? Recently, star Justin Theroux and co-creator Damon Lindelof spoke with Variety about the HBO series finale.
The drama explores what happens when 2% of the world’s population inexplicably vanishes. The cast includes Theroux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman, Kevin Carroll, Christopher Eccleston, Scott Glenn, Lindsay Duncan, Regina King, Jovan Adepo, and Janel Moloney.
On Variety’s podcast Remote Controlled, Theroux discussed Nora’s (Coon) revelation at the end of The Leftovers‘ series finale. Was she telling the truth?
It doesn’t matter. These two people are in love. … Hopefully what matters is he’s sitting at the kitchen table and she’s sitting at the kitchen table and they’ve expressed what they need to express and they’re together and in love.”
What about Lindelof? Does he think Nora was telling Kevin (Theroux) the truth?
I can only give the honest answer, which is there has to be intention. … Certainly no one had a conversation with Carrie. She read the script, and I was like, ‘Any questions?’ She was like, ‘No. Is there anything you want to tell me?’ I was like, ‘No.’ And so she interpreted it. Standing there on the set that day and then in the editing room, I went through a similar process that the audience does. Which is, I think that it is actually critical that you question it, and then you get to decide which you want to come out the other side.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Leftovers? Do you think Nora was being honest in the series finale?
I liked the show and watched every episode but the main reason the ratings were bad is because the producers said right off the bat that the mystery would never be explained. That turned off most viewers who then stopped watching the show. I’m in a TV show club at work (157 people) and 76 people stopped watching when they heard that. I guess some people think it’s great that the big question was never answered but shows that don’t have closure rarely do well. If the producers of this show had said the mystery will be explained I’m positive… Read more »
I didn’t not think she was…
WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS Same! It MADE SENSE. That our reality or plane of existence was ripped into 2…one where 2% disappeared and another where 98% disappeared. The only “explanation” that wasn’t given was WHY? a cosmic or biblical event? Who knows. But I believed this was the answer to the whole question Where did they go??? That it was actually THEY who had gone because 98% left a world without modern utilities, transportation, and society. That the world Nora’s family was in was a much harder, scarier and lonelier place where MOST lost entire families unlike Nora being the only… Read more »
