It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

One of the best shows on T.V. I was really surprised. FX’s P.R. department did a terrible job getting the word out. When I talked about it I was so surprised that people didn’t know about the show. It deserves to be on HBO. Maybe FX couldn’t handle a show with genuine hit potential. They should get behind the show in a big way and rerun the season before making a call.
As soon as you think you have a good show to look forward to……
How sad! We finally get a quality series on TV and the network cancels it. I think it’sa big mistake. Holt McAllany is awesome in the role. So is Stacey Keach.
I really can’t believe FX is canceling this show. It is one of the best shows on TV and ranks with many of the HBO series. If this show is being cancelled due to not being able to continue writing a story line for the characters, then I could understand keeping it to one season. But if this is because of ratings then it would be an injustice. The actors are all excellent, stories well done and overall just a well done production. This show should be hyped more and find a way to keep it on TV. I hope… Read more »
Noooooooooooooooo!!! This show is so good. Please let fans speak out and get FX to make a second season….
my husband an i can;t wait each week for the show, just love it. what is fx thinking i hope they rethink this dumb move, please please please please.
I’m in shock more than upset that “LIGHTS OUT” is cancelled. My wife and I love the show. We can’t wait to watch the last two episodes and were looking forward and excited for season 2. It’s one the best shows on television by far in my opinion. I just don’t get why they don’t give good shows like this ONE a chance. Meanwhile, there’s programs running on networks including FX that have no business being on the air, it’s just ridiculous.

My husband and I love this show as well. That just goes to show you that ‘regular’ people don’t get a say. Whats good to some people isn’t to others. Too bad great acting great story line.
i LOVE LIGHT OUT. IT IS THE BEST SHOW. I LOOK FORWARD TO IT. THE DRAMA AND THE CHARACTERS ARE THE BEST. I LOOK TO EACH TUES. IS THERE ANY WAY THEY WILL CHANGE THERE MIND.
What a shame..The acting is great, the story line very believable…best tv drama since the Sopranos..I wait for each episode..hopefully someone like hbo might pick it up
You gotta check out Boardwalk Empire then. Also on hbo
FX are idiots. Lights Out is an outstanding drama with excellent actors. I might as well cancel my upgraded subscription for Dish Network because I have no interest in watching FX anymore.
I really loved the show and I am kind of sad that it will not get a second season. But I have to say that it would be fine with me, if it gets a proper ending (no cliffhanger). I never really expected it to get a second season and i couldn’t imagine a good way to continue the show after he gets his fight with death row. It was always supposed to be his last fight….everything else would have been a stupid storyline. And watching him train kids or struggle with his dementia in season two wouldn’t be that… Read more »
Well then how did they come up with Rocky 2,3,4….. I too really enjoyed Lights Out, though the parallels between it and the Rocky movies are uncanny…
I am very upset that FX is cancelling “Lights Out.” I think it is one of the best shows on the air. FX is clueless. Lots of people really liked this show….
Clearly if boxing in general wasn’t in such a sorry state, it might have been more popular. A series based on MMA would pander to the current public taste. Boxing needs a new Ali.
MMA is a child compared to boxing. Boxing will always be the superior sport. Why do you think pacman or money may can make 20-30 mil a night? How much you think mma brings in? I’m a fan of both… Boxing for 25 years…MMA for 18 years. I’m just saying Boxing is by far the bigger draw. Mma has to change to be more like boxing. I’m sorry but I’m gettin a little tired of paying $60 to watch 2 guys laying on top of eachother for 15-25 min fight after fight after fight. The best part of MMA is… Read more »
My wife and I are so upset they canceled Lights Out. It is one of the best shows on TV. I would have subscribed to a pay channel like HBO just to watch it like I did for the Sopranos. It is a shame that such a great show was axed so soon. Shame on FX.
