It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

I can’t believe people tune into shows such as Jersey Shore, Gossip Girl (along with everything on CW(besides Supernatural)), and crime TV dramas that are ALL the same. Lights Out was a different take on a comeback story with real characters and real feelings. I feel as if the fact that it was not aired on a major network station such as ABC or NBC was the main reason why people didn’t tune in. FX isn’t known for putting out good TV series. Regardless, it was a great show and I’m hoping Lights will get his belt back next week… Read more »
Too bad for the writers and crew. excellent show. poor ratings due to promotions, time slot and most of all FX. No one watches FX or likes to watch FX. This Show would have been the next Sopranos like hit if on a HBO, SHO or one of the more watched networks………FX F’d up
Are you kidding me ! This was a really great show. What now more cooking or reality crap!!!!! Thanks FX your probably going after Justified next. All the show needed was a little more fight secuences.
Loved it! I’m so upset…
This sucks as this was my favorite show!
I agree Mike this show was it!! FX can suck my x53^%#$%@!@@!
I loved the show ! I hate that there wont be a season 2.
I hope another network picks it up and gives it another try,i doubt
that will happen though.
Unlike several posters on this forum I am NOT an avid boxing fan…I’ll watch a few rounds…with friends….only if the alcohol is free BUT I am by no means a serious fan. What does it say about this show that someone who has no bias towards the sport is a huge fan??? This show rocks. It has a gleam of hope to be like the one time powerhouse (aka best show of all time) The Wire. It has the right tone, acting and script. I’m truly sad to see this show go. If all it took was to write a… Read more »
This was a great show. It is a shame that there will be no season two.
I understand that tv is a numbers game, but why not try to help a great show like this out? Why wouldn’t they either put it out there a little more or move it to a different slot?
I will never again support anything from FX. I just hope that creators stay far away from them, because it is a huge letdown to have something as well-done as Lights Out be thrown to the wayside.
Creators, take note: Get as far as you can from FX. They don’t know what they’re doing.
I am heartbroken. I really grew to love this show and am shocked that it has been cancelled. I was really hoping that Fox would renew it for a second season. Another great show dropped. Hopefully another network will pick it up.
Great show. Too bad its being cancelled.
Why would FX cancel this show?! It’s been great so far!
This was a GREAT show… what is FX thinkingggggggg
This was my top show every week… why would they cancel it? Hmph im at a loss of words for this one FX!
FX is off my radar from today forward. I will no longer invest any time in FX show or series!! I am tired of investing time and commitment to begin to follow and enjoy a series just to see FX pull the plug after one season. The same thing happened with Terriers. Some shows need more than one season to get a following, especially those that begin in January. So long FX!
Man I hate to see this go 🙁 I love boxing and this show was amazing! For one, boxing, two it’s DIFFERENT! and its REAL. It shows the life of Patrick and it’s not all hiped up hollywood style like alot of shows are. It’s real, a lot of people can relate to the struggles Patrick and his family go through and let alone the boxing. It shows the behind closed doors to the boxing world. I really hate to see this show get cancelled, it was really the only show I like 🙁 I loved the settings, the main… Read more »
