It’s “lights out” for FX’s new boxing drama series. FX has cancelled Lights Out after one season due to poor ratings.
Lights Out revolves around Patrick ‘Lights’ Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion. He struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. The poor economy and a series of bad investments leave Patrick at a perilous crossroads; battling the urge to return to boxing or reluctantly accepting a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector. The show also features Catherine McCormack, Pablo Schreiber, and Stacy Keach.
Though some critics applauded the series, not many people watched the premiere in January. It registered just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.487 million viewers. The second episode dropped to a 0.4 rating and 0.92 million viewers. The season has averaged a 0.4 in the demo and 0.88 million.
To no surprise, FX isn’t ordering a second season of Lights Out. The cable channel made the announcement today and indicated that the final two episodes will air as previously scheduled; on March 29th and April 5th at 10pm.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Lights Out cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

Great show, cast and scripts. Should be renewed and shown on Friday or Saturday night, when more people are thinking about sports. Finally a quality show to watch and it gets cancelled so more crap can be put on TV.
Great show. The reason it was cancelled was that it did not appeal to the demographic the networks care about. They do not care that the show is intelligent, well scripted and well acted. It should have been advertised more and moved from the very tough Tuesday time slot. This cancellation just proves that the fx executives are learning fron the networks. They are morons.
I challenge you to find a show on currently where more happens in one hour? It is action packed and with characters you want to know more about. I will go so far as to say that Eamon Walker’s portrayal of Ed Romeo was one of the most captivating performances from ANY show at ANY TIME. Emmy Voters should reward him. I’ll miss you Lights…like we hardly got to know you!
İt Musnt have cancelled ..it was so amazing movie…
Im upset that was a great show with a great message if you fall you can always get back up and no matter how old you are never give up on your self and your dream and if you fail at least you no you gave it everything you got and real family and friends stick by you no matter what great message great show.
watched the show online and it got better as it went on why on earth cancel a fantastic show like this without giving it a chance is beyond me, look at some of the great series over the years,e r ,friends, frasier, psych, white collar, and even csi they all got better with age .but as with the superb Terriers its cast aside before it even has time to grow—–shame on you
Yes, I’m sick to my stomach to see this show get cancelled. This is the best show to hit FX since Sons of Anarchy, I am extremely disappointed that the network has to turn the lights out on it. As much as I would like to insult those who watch reality television and kill the ratings of actual quality television, I will not do so. All I can say is, it is a damn shame this show will not see a second season.
This is a very well done show and should be given another look. The actors are great and the show feels very real.
When I think of the junk on cable that does well, week after week, such as the atrocious “Jersey Shore” but this great show is cancelled it just boggles the mind! I was riveted each week as was my husband and he likes very little that is on T.V. What a shame this show was not given a chance to build an audience. As we have seen in the past, some of the greatest shows on television did not do well the first season but gained an audience into the second season. I would really hope FX would reconsider but… Read more »
I’m truly saddend by the series ending. It was a great joy to see good television. Im deeply dissappointed and quite shocked that this fx series didnt get picked up for a second season.
But at the same time Im not surprised, over and over again you see great shows fall to the side and other horrible shows (reality tv) continue to stay on. It’s really just sad.
Good show. Sorry it is cancelled. With the other junk that is running, one would think that a show based on “real life type” things that shed light on behind the scenes scenarios would capture some interest. One of the few male oriented soaps. Keep showing cartoons and all adult dramas could go away.
I was sorry to hear that Lights Out is being cancelled. I thought the show had some terrific characters and great stories. It’s a shame that the good quality shows don’t last and the less than steller shows remain. I hope that Justified continues, that show is also quite enjoyable.
I’m also sorry to see this show go. I thought the cast was excellent, story was excellent, I was invested. It says a lot about the intelligence of the general TV audience these days that excellent shows like these can’t pick up a following. I don’t think we can entirely blame the network for these types of great shows not succeeding. While I agree that it would be nice to see the networks commit to a show for more than a single season to allow for word of mouth to spread, etc… but without ratings, how can they really afford… Read more »
hopefully they end it instead of just leaving it hanging… great show
Why does a great show like this get cancelled and crappy shows remain on tv
great show with a less than stellar cast. Lights and his iwfe are forgettable actors. supporting cast is by far the best part of the show. Terriers was a much better show with a great cast and they did not give it a chance to develop a following through word of mouth
