ABC has done very well with their political drama, Scandal. Will Madam Secretary be a similar ratings hit for CBS? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled? Stay tuned.
On Madam Secretary, former CIA analyst Elizabeth McCord (Tèa Leoni) returns to public life after being recruited by the President (Keith Carradine) to become the new Secretary of State. The rest of the cast includes Željko Ivanek, Bebe Neuwirth, Geoffrey Arend, Patina Miller, Erich Bergen, Tim Daly, Katherine Herzer, and Evan Roe.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
1/12 update: Madam Secretary and two other shows have been renewed for a second season by CBS.
Final season averages: 1.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 11.82 million total viewers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Due to a Nielsen glitch, some of the early ratings of the 2014-15 season were revised a couple weeks later.
Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the Madam Secretary TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for season two?
babs nailed it.
GREAT show. i almost want to stop watching it because it seems that shows i get hooked on always get cancelled. leoni is of course fantastic, as she is with everything she touches, and so far the writing has been top notch. (except for onw show which i found a snoozer). no one should be concerned with the acting, it will remain flawless. i worry if the writers can keep it up. gotta be a tough thing to do.
Love the show
Smart and in touch with world affairs without over drama of them
I really like the show and would be really disappointed if it were cancelled. I think that Tea Leoni does a great job as the lead. I think that she and Tim Daly have an on screen chemistry that makes the relationship between Henry and Elizabeth really come alive. It is refreshing to see a strong female lead character who has just that character but is not flawlwss and wrestles with demons just like the rest of us. I especially like the strong relationship that she shares with her husband. I implore CBS to keep Madam Secretary
Thank you Renee! You said a mouthful. You and I see eye to eye….. Thanks again. Bill Partridge
Agree! Keep the show
I really enjoy this show – it’s smart, interesting, and exciting. I didn’t think I liked Tea Leoni but I enjoy her character a lot, and I especially enjoy her interaction with her husband (& what a cutie pie he is). Seems more realistic than the new show with K. Heigl. Only problem for me is the time slot… seems I’m always out at that time. Wish they’d move it to another night, or later Sun. night.
I like this show and will keep watching it. However, it needs some improvements on the work side (family is ok). To avoid the risk of getting into a rut, it needs a variety of guest stars that are not necessarily foreign dignataries. For one thing, the show makes it look like the State Dept. only has 6 people doing all the work. Mix it up at the staff meetings! Show a couple of Under Secretaries and Assistant Secretaries, portions of a Secretary’s town hall meeting, etc. And where are the Deputy Secretaries?? State has two of those, you know?… Read more »
I have no idea how procedurally accurate the show is, but there is so much to like about it, beginning with the smart, strong female lead. I really enjoy the way she works out solutions to some thorny issues. I like the principles she insists on. I like the relationship with her husband, as well.
Love, love, love this show and Tea Leoni, your the best.
I like the concept, but the Secratary of State seems more like she’s still in the CIA. I understand that you’ve got a story arc going in which she is ivestigating the death of the former SOS, but wish there was more procedural, day to day story, and less international crisis of the week.
Great show great acting. Love Tea Leoni she does a great job. Please renew this show. It’s renewed me as a cbs viewer.
Thanks Jackie! I love your comment. I hope that our words together can have some impact on CBS. United we stand! Let’s do this. Thanks again. Bill Partridge
I love this show!! With so much bad news seeing a positive political model of an honest thoughtful intellectual action oriented family/sec of state is intelligent and hopeful. Pls keep this show!!
Thank you Hannah for your comment. We can only wish that there is time to resurrect Madam Secretary. What do you think of Resurrection Hannah? I would appreciate your insight. Thanks again Hannah. Bill Partridge
I enjoy Madame Secretary VERY much! Politically it is encouraging to see someone in a high position who wants to deal honestly especially compared to our political climate in reality!!! I think all the actors are doing a great job holding my interest. It is smart and yet personal! It would be grievous to see this show go offline!! So many other programs could be dropped!
Thank you Saundra! Your comment was terse yet insightful. I hope that the powers that be read and heed your comment. Thanks again Saundra. Have a great day….. Bill Partridge
Keep the show!!
LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a football fan! I love this show!!!!!!!
Terrific acting! Good writing! What seems to be the problem? There are other television shows that are worse than this one. Give it a chance. You are putting it up against football. If anyone has any insight, please feel free to share……. Thanks.Bill
William, I certainly don’t have any insight except that SOMETHING has to be put up against football. So in my opinion only they are putting up a strong program. Plus there are millions of us who rarely if ever watch football on TV. Glad we have something as good as this to watch.
Thank you Elaine for your vital comment. I keep track of the football score in another way while watching Madam Secretary. I don’t feel all this banter will cause the network to change their minds. There are a bunch of guys who look at nothing but numbers. When asked what the show they cancelled was about, they are not sure. Thank again. Bill Partridge
