No wonder Netflix cancelled Marco Polo. FierceCable reports the streaming platform lost $200 million on the recently axed TV series.
Netflix cancelled the historical drama earlier this month after only two seasons. The show chronicled the early days of the infamous explorer as he traveled through the Mongol Empire. The cast included Lorenzo Richelmy, Rick Yune, Benedict Wong, Claudia Kim, Remy Hii, Olivia Cheng, Mahesh Jadu, Tom Wu, Gabriel Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh.
While Netflix has not confirmed the number, FierceCable does report the show lost the streaming service around $200 million over the course of its two seasons. And though Netflix does not report ratings, Marco Polo never did receive the kind of critical attention the platform’s other original series, like Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things—have.
Earlier this year, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told The Hollywood Reporter that Marco Polo managed “what it was supposed to do.” No other reason was given for the cancellation, but it wouldn’t be surprising that the $200 million loss was part of the decision.
What do you think? Did you watch Marco Polo? Would you have watched a third season?
Great show! Why not cancel an overated show like OITNB instead, That show definitely took a nose dive!!!
Please bring it back for some closure.
The hundred eyes origin is also great viewing to help understand where he comes from.
This series has been an absolute guilty pleasure of mine. Would love more.
Hell Yes, I have worked in Hollywood for over 35 years as a Key Grip on everything from Dallas and Poltergiest to Start Trek and Charmed and this was a fantastic show. Very well acted and shot with great attention to detail and lighting. The story and subplots kept me interested and always yearning for more. Being in the industry I’mpretty “jaded” when it comes to viewing and this was one of the few that made the grade for me. Hell on Wheels was another winner and at least the “wimps” finished that one. It always seems hat nowadays shows… Read more »
I love the series “Marco Polo”!!! It is fabulous – intrigue, drama, romance! Terrific cast! I am just learning that it is cancelled, while searching to see when the next season would begin. So disappointed!
This is a great show. My friends and I sometimes gathered to watch it like it was “Super Bowl”.
Netflix should bring it back. I am willing to buy the DVD or BlueRay format of all seasons – including future ones.
Hell YESS! Would have watched a 3rd and 4th and 5th……
Marco Polo has become our favorite show. We’re so invested in the characters and the story line…. sad that Netflix couldn’t have promoted it as it has it’s other titles. Very sad there won’t be a third season.
Bad choice cancelling a show this great. Season 3 is needed and I hope we get it somehow.
The series was and is a great story telling medium of a part of history we rarely bother to look up and learn. The acting was top notch and well potraited. Personally I didn’t like the crusade part, and should of been changed, but there was enough topics to have a completed 3 series by just following true historical facts.
Since they have cancelled the show they need to just delete it from the line up. It’s rather deceiving to offer an incomplete series, sort of like selling a book with the last chapter ripped out.
Well it certainly wasn’t because the series wasn’t any good. I think Netflix broke the first rule of starting any enterprise, make sure you have enough materials to finish it before you start it. This series is way over Netflix’s head, someone with more forethought and the ability to work toward the end result needs to take it over, although it’s probably too late now.
Hells to the mother f’n yes I would’ve watched a third season!!! Lol such a great show… #confused
My husband and I Loved the show. I hope someone comes to their senses and does season 3.
Just finished it. It was fantastic, little bit of story and a little bit of history. Will definitely miss not seeing a third season
Its just like a so called tv station (netflix)to cancel a good show. There was soooo much they could have covered. I agree with others that have posted about the martial arts and costumes.Awesome!
