Tuesday night, FOX debuted a new drama for the Summer months, Mental. So, did the premiere’s ratings make the network crazy-happy or just drive them crazy?
Mental revolves around an unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes the Director of Mental Health at a fictional Los Angeles hospital. Created by Dan LeVine and co-executive produced by his sister, Deborah Joy LeVine, the series stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, Derek Webster, Jacqueline McKenzie, Marisa Ramirez, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Edwin Hodge.
The series premiered on Tuesday night and finished in third place for the 9pm hour with 5.8 million viewers and a 2.1/5 rating/share among the 18-49 demographic.
Those numbers aren’t that impressive but the drama did build on its lead-in, a rerun of the popular and very compatible House. There was also very little drop off between Mental’s first and second half hours, indicating that most watched the entire episode.
So, while Mental didn’t have a great debut, it wasn’t bad either. As we enter into the Summer months, viewership tends to fall off so the network may be okay with these numbers. But, will people return for subsequent installments? Will FOX give the show a second season once all 13 episodes have aired? We’ll have to wait and see.
So, what did you think? Is the show worth keeping or should it be cancelled?

KEEP!!! we watch it every week; it’s believable.
I enjoyed the series, being that I suffer with depression and anxiiety. IT was great to see how Jack was really concern for his patience and he involved family members. I just wish that dianoise and treatment was or could be in 72 hrs. Please let there be a 2nd season.
I love Mental, the show is witty, honest, true to form, being a nurse and worked in and around hospital psychiatric units, this show is very on the right track. Showing the human side of the doctors and patients. It is awesome show. Please keep it.
I thought it was a terrific show–innovative and a very well character driven series. I was sorry to learn it isn’t on Fox’s Fall schedule. What a shame.
Great show, my family has watched from the beginning. Please keep it. Jack Gallagher is refreshing and fun.
PLEASE KEEP MENTAL ON. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! IT’S DIFFERENT AND ABLE TO DEAL WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SIDE OF MEDICINE. THAT ACTUALLY MAKES ME THINK THINGS THROUGH AND LOOK AT THINGS A BIT DIFFERENTLY. I HAVE NEVER MISSED AN EPISODE AND DON’T WANT IT TO END. PLEASE BRING IT BACK SOON!!!!!!
KEEP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! The good shows keep getting cancelled. Get rid of all the stupid reality shows.
I have really enjoyed this show and would hate to see it go off the air. With all the ridiculous reality TV shows and redundant crime dramas, it would be a shame to get rid of an interesting and entertaining show like Mental.
KEEP IT!!!!! Super show. I love it it is very entertaining and informative. Has lots of room to grow to keep you wathing. Definatley agree with others it makes a great companion to the House show.
Oh, I hope they keep “Mental”! This is one of very few shows that I actually watch, nowadays. It is way different then your current typical medical drama where the emphasis seems to be on personal relationships over patients. It also focuses exclusively on the area of mental health, which is still vast and unchartered territory. So many subjects can be explored and examined. I watch “Mental” and I am at turns shocked, intrigued and enlightened by the workings of the human mind. I think it is a great service to viewers and those suffering from mental illness because it… Read more »
Keep it!!! I love it and watch every episode, dvr it and watch it again.
We love this show. I have watched every single epoisode withoutt fail. since day 1. Please keep it on, we loose far too many intelligent programs to silly ones. We say YES to the Mental!!
Keep it! There are plenty of medical shows, whether they be unorthodox (House) or not so unorthodox, but this is about a medical practice that is one of the last practices with plenty of unknowns. There is plenty to throw at viewers, seeing as the most popular and most used text to find psychiatric or psychological problems is the DSM-IV plus, and every psychologist and psychiatrist who is worth anything will tell you it is incomplete and unreliable because the human mind is too complex to just diagnose everyone equally. This show has so much room for not just drama… Read more »
I really enjoyed the show, and look forward to watching it every week. I love Jack Gallagher’s character, and can’t wait to see what he does next. The finale seemed more final than just for the season. I do hope it returns next season.
Keep it. Interesting situations and believable characters. Unfortunately they will kill it. The networks won’t let shows with weak numbers at the beginning stay on the air long enough to grow their audience anymore. Case in point, Jericho, a well written and very well acted show. The network canceled it before they had an ending of any type. Only with a huge grass roots campaign that sent certain network executives 20 tons of 1 pound bags of peanuts to CBS corparte offices in both New York and Los Angeles. The fans also signed a web petition with a total of… Read more »
