Though it was promoted ad nauseum during the coverage of the Summer Olympics, NBC could find few friends for their My Own Worst Enemy series. The TV show has been cancelled after airing just four episodes.
My Own Worst Enemy follows the strange life of Henry Spivey (Christian Slater), a hum-drum suburbanite with a wife and two kids (played by Madchen Amick, Taylor Lautner, and Bella Thorne). Unknown to Henry and his loved ones, he has a dual identity as a secret operative and trained killer named Edward Albright.
Edward works for a superspy organization under supervisor Mavis Heller (Alfre Woodard) and is partnered with friend and fellow operative Tom Grady/Raymond Carter (Mike O’Malley). Others in the series include Omid Abtahi, Saffron Burrows, James Cromwell, Sarai Givaty, Mark Ivanir, Mindy Sterling, Missy Yager, Eugenia Yuan, and Louis Giambalvo.
The show debuted on October 13, 2008 on NBC. Despite a lot of high-profile promotion, the premiere attracted only 7.27 million viewers and a 3.0/8 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers dropped to 5.69 million and a 2.6/6. The most recent episode hit a low of 4.27 million and 1.8/5. Though Heroes has been struggling this season, Worst Enemy has been losing over 40% of its lead-in audience and more than that in the key demographic.

NBC has announced that they are cancelling the series following the completion of its ninth episode. It’s been confirmed that the network plans to continue to air the series until all of the episodes have been shown.
If Worst Enemy goes uninterrupted, the series finale should air on December 15th, the same night as Heroes’ so-called “fall finale.” Because of the abrupt cancellation, fans of Worst Enemy aren’t expected to be given any kind of conclusion to the show’s ongoing storylines. That’s enough to make even mild-mannered Henry angry. Stay tuned!

I love this show how it is! But if they want to appeal to a younger audience, as my self, then they could put in more story lines with Henry’s children. Truthfully, the reason i started to watch this show, because my favorite actor (Taylor Lautner who plays Jack Spivey) is in the show. So I watched it for him, and then on the first episode I got realied in like a fish on a pole, it was that good and now I am obsessed. So please give it another chance!
Here we go again! Pulling the plug on a good show. Yes, it does take some intelligence to figure out what’s going on. That must be the answer. It’s got to be figured out quickly or it doesn’t have a chance. No matter what you think NBC, we’re not all dumb out and actually like to be mentally challenged. What are you going to replace it with? A reality show … I gag at the thought. NBC, you need to grow some and stick with the MOWE. Only thing left is Life. You cancelled Journeyman and now MOWE. I’m going… Read more »
@fontaine71: Essentially it comes down to advertising dollars. The advertisers pay more for airtime on shows with lots of young viewers (those who are supposedly not settled on which products they’ll buy). If not many people watch a show, the networks have to charge less the ad time or, in many cases, refund money they’ve been paid in advance. Unlike in the old days, all of the networks are owned by big corporations with stockholders, regular people like you and me. These stockholders aren’t happy if their companies don’t make much money or the value of the stock goes down.… Read more »
I just have one question, if anyone wants to answer. I grew up in the 80’s, and back then even if a show didnt make it, the producers at least gave it a year. Sometimes it actually paid off, and shows that might have been in trouble even made it 3 or 4 years. I guess what I am asking, is does anyone know why these networks are so quick to pull a show these days. I mean if a show does not perform right away these days, they do not waist any time. NBC is the worst, but they… Read more »
Man, this is getting annoying. I work every night, but Monday’s I get home just in time to watch this show. You suck NBC!!!!! I’m so over TV.
What a waste of my time. I actually got into this show, now its being pulled without even being given a chance.
Please don’t cancel it. Change the time slot if its not doing well, but I love the story. It is perfect and entertaining.
Why spend all of this production money on series shows if you won’t give them the chance to succeed? It’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Television executives want instant gratification and if a show does not produce blockbuster ratings the first few weeks, they deem it a failure. Many people watch shows online and on their DVRs. Also, a number of people (like myself) discover a show well into the season. I hear rumblings from friends and then I go back and watch the show, becoming easily addicted. With this behavior of executives to cancel after a… Read more »

I absolutely love this show and thought Christian Slater did an outstanding job. I was soo disappointed to hear it has been cancelled. I think far worse shows have been allowed to stay on. I just don’t understand it. Please please reconsider!
