At the recent upfronts, it was announced that CBS was cancelling The New Adventures of Old Christine after five years on the air.
Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the sitcom has been in danger of being cancelled each year and, on a few occasions, ABC expressed interest in taking it over. Though it’s looking doubtful that the alphabet network will indeed save it, discussions are still ongoing.
Kari Lizer, Old Chrisine’s creator, says that the cancellation didn’t surprise her, especially considering the fact that the show was taken out of the Monday night block of sitcoms and has been put on hiatus many times during its run.
She recently told TV Guide, “As far as what happened at CBS, we’ve suffered from a serious lack of support from them since the beginning… I hate to say it, but I’m afraid they don’t care much for the female-of-a-certain-age point of view over there. How else do you explain them squandering the talents of Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] and Wanda [Sykes]?”
The cancellation news came at a particularly bad time for Sykes. Her Saturday night talk series, The Wanda Sykes Show, was also cancelled by FOX. Lizer expects Sykes to bounce back though, noting, “She’s never funnier than when she’s pissed off.”
What do you think? Is CBS’ treatment of Old Christine some kind of sexism or just due to poor ratings?

This show was great!! CBS does not have a clue. The cast were all wonderful together. I now know why the big three networks are in trouble. They keep making up and broadcasting reality shows that are geared to morons. “The New Adventures of Old Christine was so well written and Julie Louis Dryfus was terrific on it – such delivery. Every character was so perfect. The only slightly weak spot was “Richie”. NBC – ABC use your heads and pick this show up!!

I love this show!! I can’t believe its off the air. Bring it back!
Ilove this show 🙂 i hope someone picks it up juliua, her brother and barb are so funny, i do watch the reruns but would love to see new ones!
This is one of the smartest, most intelligent female-led sitcoms since, Murphy Brown, Mary Tyler Moore or Maude. It takes amazing talent to find an incredible cast, writers and staff to capture today’s women’s issues in a humorous, but still effective way. To cancel this show is not only disappointing from a female perspective, but from a creative and comedic one. This show is so well done, I DVR every rerun and watch them when I can. There’s no one better that Julia Louis-Dreyfus to lead a cast like this, or any other. Losing her talent alone is a bad… Read more »
I can’t BELIEVE they cancelled this hilarious wonderful show!!! I watch the reruns over and over and over. I was VERY UPSET that they cancelled this and kept other STUPID shows on (like The Office to name one). All the characters in this show were the greatest!!!! PLEASE TELL SOMEONE TO PICK THIS SHOWUP AGAIN!!!!!
PLEASE,
SOME PICK THE SHOW!!!!
Big mistake, the show clearly was funny as heck. I’m a guy and I loved the show. There had to be a lot going on @ the station that people will probably never know about. Great job.
Shocker – great show – CBS screwed up on this one…next will be the Big Bang Theory!!
I loved this show and never laughed more than when I watched it. Someone needs to pick this show back up and start again. Julia and Wanda are hilarious together and this show never should have been cancelled.
put it on usa, tnt or one of the other networks that the over “40” age group has been enjoying over the past few years!
This is one of my favorite shows! I wish someone would pick it up and SOON! There aren’t any shows about a REGULAR family with REAL problems!
I am so sad to see it go I laughed so hard at this show and will miss it a bunch!
I cannot even believe this show was cancelled!
I am not up to date with the latest, but I hope someone picks it up!
No wonder people are not watching the major networks as much any more. They cancel shows that millions of people are watching to save on costs. The New Adventures Of Old Christine was making a profit for CBS but they do not like women starring shows as much. It is getting great ratings on Lifetime, WGN, and the CW. This show is now playing seven times daily and four on demand cable episodes. A company has licensed All My Children and One Life To Live to run on the internet with new episodes, why not with Old Christine. There are… Read more »
Perfect example of network execs and their lame decisions. This show is priceless. I watch the 5 yrs of episodes on a daily basis. Can’t get enough. This show falls in the category of Arrested Development. Why cancel shows that are so clever?! I will never understand. I think the majority of tv viewers are too dumbed down!! They can’t grasp the humor and freshness. Reality Schmality!!
If this sitcom was such a bomb, why is it all over television in syndication? When I consider all of the male-dominated programming CBS broadcasts (along with their obvious passion for “Reality” TV), it’s clear to see that a show with strong middle-aged woman at the helm would get cancelled. Perhaps it’s time that the babies (subliminal: young, pompous make-a-name-for-myself execs) running CBS need to get tossed out with the bath water…either that, or the might just want to consider bringing back another show of substance- Baywatch.
