At the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, spoke about the future of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Though it won’t be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies.
No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube.
This weekend, Lombardo said, “We’re talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we’ve love to do it. So it’s alive.”
If they get the final go-ahead, the two HBO movies would likely be shot back-to-back. It seems they won’t be filmed completely in Botswana however.
It was reported last month that the show’s producers had relocated from Botswana to Cape Town. The Botswana government, hard hit by the recession, balked at the idea of subsidizing film production while South Africa doubled their rebate offer.
If the movies are actually made, they’ll be filmed mostly in Cape Town with occasional lensing in Botswana, the locale where the story is set.
What do you think? Are you a fan of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Would you like to see it return as a pair of movies?

I decided to look and see when this show was coming back on, I felt it had been on hiatus long enough. Low and behold another good series/show cancelled. I guess two (2) movies would be good if that is all we can get, but to have the series would have been better. I do think it had enough of a following to warrant keeping a nice, quality entertaining show, like the that on the air. Very disappointing.
i listened to all the audio books of #1 Ladies Detective Agency. Then I watched the first DVD episodes. Excellent. Can’t wait for the 2nd DVD to come out. And a 12th Audio? We have to get Mma kutsi married!!!!
It would be fabulous to have 2 new No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency Movies and then hopefully more single episodes will then be made, as well. I have never seen something so fantastic like this show that I just love so much and watch over and over again! Please bring it back soon! Gotta go, episode 6 is now starting! Thanks!
My wife Karen has read all the books. We loved the series, watched several times and wanted more so we bought them ! Movies would be better than nothing but the series was excellent. Please don’t make the mistake of not listening to your viewers.
I just recently watched the DVDs for season 1 – FANTASTIC!!!. I was so disappointed to see that the show was cancelled. It had so much quality. The actors were GREAT! The story lines were family friendly and thought provoking. I also could have gotten addicted. I would thoroughly support any movies.

Horribly disappointed this is being discontinued! Such a quality show. There are so many other shows of much lesser taste that could have been tossed. My husband and I looked forward to watching it each week and looked forward to seeing it carry on for another season..
Any format will do!!! So well done!!!!
I love this wonderful series. All my family has watched it and many of us more than once. I have leant it to relatives and friends and the response has been tremendously positive.
I hope they continue the series with the same actors. I’m truly sorry Anthony Minghella is no longer alive to work on it. But I think it could be continued, and hope it is.
I love The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency tv series. I want more! I am addicted to it! Please?
Loved the series and was left hanging with the last episode. Please continue the series with the same cast members. Did not watch on HBO but bought the season 1 dvd set.

This is not a good thing. What a fun, quality show! How about rather cancel one of those silly reality shows, and continue to provide us with finer viewing choices such as this!
I am very disappointed by this news. I have watched this series over and over and over, and find this series to be one of HBO’s finest. I was so waiting for the new season (2); but instead – two (2) movies… I am a huge fan of HBO – I do not recall any other series running for one season only – except this. What “genius” group made this decision?
I have read all the books in the series. This is a wonderful show! All the actors did a fantastic job. The shows were very well done and family oriented. There is very little on TV now days that is worth watching.
These shows are fantastic! I certainly hope there are movies in the future! Something this good shouldn’t just be “dropped”!
I’m so sad that it won’t be an HBO series anymore
Me and especially my daughters admire this character (Jill Scott) It’s unfortunate.
Please, please continue the series. I just watched it on DVD and plan to purchase it ASAP. A movie may be good if with the same cast and crew and with sequals. But the episodes are great.
