At the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, spoke about the future of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Though it won’t be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies.
No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube.
This weekend, Lombardo said, “We’re talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we’ve love to do it. So it’s alive.”
If they get the final go-ahead, the two HBO movies would likely be shot back-to-back. It seems they won’t be filmed completely in Botswana however.
It was reported last month that the show’s producers had relocated from Botswana to Cape Town. The Botswana government, hard hit by the recession, balked at the idea of subsidizing film production while South Africa doubled their rebate offer.
If the movies are actually made, they’ll be filmed mostly in Cape Town with occasional lensing in Botswana, the locale where the story is set.
What do you think? Are you a fan of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Would you like to see it return as a pair of movies?

Would like to see more of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective agency on screen.
I am upset that it will Not return as a series :-((
I appreciated lookin forward to each episode…
I also felt that it showed great diversity for HBO series.
Although I would support the films, I do believe it is far better developed as a series(just like the books.
I am just seeing the films and I love them so much. I am bummed that there were only seven episodes made. Please make the films!
Absolutely loved the series and would love to see it on TV or in Movie form. Maybe public television would be a better vehicle for this wonderful series of books.
I miss this show so much! It was the best thing HBO ever did. I have read all the novels and re-read them because they contain so much wisdom wrapped up in a simple package. I cannot even begin to perceive why such a wonderful series would not be brought back. I know it’s all about a bottom line…and that is what is wrong with tv…Full of garbage that people watch because of low expectations and these same people buy the products advertised on those garbage shows for the same reasons. HBO had a chance to stand up and say,… Read more »
Loved the series and am disappointed that it was cancelled. Movies would be nice, but the series would be better.
I am bummed that its not being continued as a series. I love Jill Scott and this show she inspires me and through the show she elludes to how comfortable she is in her own skin.
Loved the series and I am hungry for more. Very funny and very warm. It makes you realize that folks in small communities with dirt roads have the same issues as folks in the big cities with streets and sidewalks. Plase bring t back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in love with this series. I am very sad to see it go but you can bet I will be at both movies when they come out. The stories and the acting is so endearing and beautiful. Sad to see the show go, wish they could find a way to bring it back so that it can be viewed every week!
PLEASE! Make movies or more TV – there are many more stories in the series!
I love this series. I hope it returns. I will be watching for more news!
I’m so very sad to see this series cancelled. After reading the books I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy the show…especially as much as I did. It truly had what it takes to be one of the “Greats” of television. Could have been a hit in the leagues of “Sex and the City”. The casting was phenomenal. Perfectly on target. The scenery was gorgeous – so very different from what we’re used to in the U.S. We will miss the characters and the stories. Please bring it back! If not in series then we’ll settle for movies.
Our family loved the TV series- please make more series or at least some movies!
Definitely make the movies! Loved the books and the series. Can’t wait to see more!
Reading #10 in the book series and thought I would check to see when the next season of the TV series would be out. I am so disappointed it did not get renewed. Yes, please movies would be fantastic. Jill Scott was a wonderful Precious.
