ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President’s speech in Tucson which caused some disjointed viewing in some areas. ABC decided to rerun the series premiere on the following night to give it more exposure, displacing Private Practice.

Despite that extra coverage, Off the Map dropped by nearly 9% in the key demo in week two. That’s not bad percentage-wise but the debut number was pretty low to begin with. The series attracted a 2.1 rating in the demo and 5.79 million viewers. Last night’s episode dropped 14% to a 1.8 rating and 5.06 million viewers.
After just three weeks, Off the Map is near the bottom of ABC’s demo rankings of scripted series, tying struggling No Ordinary Family. That’s not good at all and since Off the Map’s ratings haven’t stabilized yet, they may keep falling.
In the past, the alphabet network has renewed one or two struggling freshman series for a second season. Unless the ratings start going up, that looks like Off the Map’s only hope for survival. There are 13 episodes in season one and, for now, the finale is scheduled for April 6th. Time will tell if that ends up being the season or series finale.

Alright, i am litterally BEGGING u to PLEASE keep off the map.!!! I used to watch a show every single night before bed until i saw the whole series.So i checked out every other show and wasnt really imterested. But Then one of my friends told me about off the map and now i CANT WAIT til wednesday every week.!! my dad told me the other day that it might be canceled and i didnt believe him. So i looked it up and almost cried when i read this.! PLEASE DONT CANCEL OFF THE MAP.!!!!!!!

Finally, a show that is different, so instead of building interest, there is little or no advertising, and I guess it will be another show to bite the dust. I liked it, why are we held captive to the ratings people who only rely on a small sampling? And they wonder why we all switch to cable? I like the characters on this show. I like learning about native plants, alternative medical therapies. Alas, it will probably be gone soon.

I will make the plea and hopw that it gets a positive response. Off The Map should be saved and not cancelled. It is original, but in a bad time slot. The episodes are getting more interesting and the chemistry between characters fun. It is getting very hard to want to watch any ABC shows because the good ones always get cancelled. Wise up and give them a chance to take off. for

I’m a 16yr old teenage and me and my friends love Off the Map, ABC should surely keep it, serious Grey’s and Private are good shows, but Off the Map has something different to it, the fact that Lily is going out with Matteo makes it even more juicy, they SHOULD NOT CANCEL IT. IT’S TOO GOOD! 😀

Off the map is a awesome show,its unique,inovative,moral and a show that both myself and my 10 year old daughter can watch together,we love it,my suggestion would be to rerun it over the summer,I think it has gotten buried by greys anatomy and also american idol,re run it over summer and give it a chance for another season next year in a different time slot,Im s sick of all the shows I love being canned because you guys dont give them a chance
