ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President’s speech in Tucson which caused some disjointed viewing in some areas. ABC decided to rerun the series premiere on the following night to give it more exposure, displacing Private Practice.

Despite that extra coverage, Off the Map dropped by nearly 9% in the key demo in week two. That’s not bad percentage-wise but the debut number was pretty low to begin with. The series attracted a 2.1 rating in the demo and 5.79 million viewers. Last night’s episode dropped 14% to a 1.8 rating and 5.06 million viewers.
After just three weeks, Off the Map is near the bottom of ABC’s demo rankings of scripted series, tying struggling No Ordinary Family. That’s not good at all and since Off the Map’s ratings haven’t stabilized yet, they may keep falling.
In the past, the alphabet network has renewed one or two struggling freshman series for a second season. Unless the ratings start going up, that looks like Off the Map’s only hope for survival. There are 13 episodes in season one and, for now, the finale is scheduled for April 6th. Time will tell if that ends up being the season or series finale.

Love this show. I was always a Grey’s Anatomy fan have been since it started and now I look more forward to Wednesday nights then I do thursdays it’s a great show with great characters and a good story line. It keeps me on the edge of my seat every week waiting 7 days to see how last weeks issue works out. I will be very upset if it doesn’t come back.

I love this show! It it my favorite show on TV now. I didn’t think anything would pass “House” but this show has. What a great time to start a series in such a tropical location in the midst of one of the coldest winters on record in our area, which is the main reason I watched the premier. The stories have both action and relational intrigue, the characters are well developed, the direction is wonderful! I love ‘Off the Map’. Please give it a chance!

my daughter and I love this show! I think they should definitely keep this show! We watched the show for the first time two weeks ago and liked it so much we found all the episodes we missed and stayed up til 5 in the morning watching all the episodes.

Keep it! Keep it! Keep it! Everyone I know loves this show. I hope abc gives it a fair chance. The characters and story lines are great. I’d trade private practice for it any day.
I love this show as well. They should keep it longer and possibly play it an hour earlier so that the working class people can watch it at a reasonable time and still be able to function the next day. ABC should think of stuff like that they also need to look at their website and see how much people relly enjoy the show and how many viewers want it kept.
My whole family love this show. My Grandkids always ask if I recorded it for them , since its on after they go to bed. This is definately worth keeping.
I think ABC should start supporting their new shows a bit longer than they do! ” Off The Map” is a very entertaining show and that’s what I’m looking for , when I turn on my television. They have cancelled so many great shows, “Men in Trees”, “Life on Mars”! Yet they keep a show like “Cougar Town”, that started out great and now is nothing but a group of friends drinking and acting ridiculous!
