ABC’s mid-season medical drama, Off the Map, recently concluded its first season on the air. The alphabet network’s been looking for a new hit drama and this one was produced by veteran producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. How does Off the Map stack up? Will it be cancelled or renewed for season two?
Off the Map revolves around six doctors who have “lost their way” and travel to a remote South American jungle to help those in need and to try to rediscover the reasons why they wanted to become physicians. The series features the talents of Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
The medical drama premiered with a mediocre 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The TV series won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. ABC decided to give Off the Map another chance to attract viewers by rerunning the first episode the following night, in place of a Private Practice rerun, and it retained much of the Grey’s Anatomy lead-in audience.
Unfortunately, that’s still not a great start and subsequent episodes of Off the Map essentially drew fewer and fewer viewers each week. The final episode of the season hit a series low and attracted a very poor 1.3 rating in the demo with only 3.80 million viewers.
Off the Map is the second-lowest scripted series on ABC that hasn’t already been officially cancelled, averaging a 1.7 in the demo and 4.96 million viewers. It ranks below doomed No Ordinary Family and just above doomed Detroit 1-8-7. In short, unless ABC really needs to keep Shonda Rhimes happy, there is no reason why the network would bring Off the Map back next year for season two.
What do you think? Do you think there’s any hope for Off the Map? Do you think it will be cancelled or renewed? Are you okay with the way the TV series ended?

I Loved this show! I feel the time slot it had, hurt it more than anything. I sure hope they decide to keep it. No, I don’t feel it ended at all!
I love this show! Excellent cast. Excellent script, beautiful scenery, real and emotional issues , interesting decisions to be made. I prefer it to Grey’s Anatomy. There is such garbage on the airways, this is good, moral provoking, making one think of what’s really important. My hope is that you give this one another chance please!
Really loved this show. Hope it comes back!
I love this show !!! I’d love to see it come back for more seasons. The ratings problems with a lot of shows could be because they start playing around with the days and times that it is on without notice to the viewers. We watch for the show, and can’t always find it, and after so much of their moving shows around and not being able to keep up with it, people start to lose interest in whenever they have decided to put it on. That is what is not good for any show, therefore their ratings start to… Read more »
Hopefully, if ABC is smart they will renew this show. They have a very bad habit of not letting shows progress. I have watched several shows that ABC put out, only for them to all of a sudden cancel it. If they cancel Off The Map, I will not watch another show that ABC puts out! There’s no point. All the stupid shows make it and the good ones get canned.
WHAT?? Why do they always cancel the best shows!! I never missed an episode even if I had to watch it online! The mindless reality shows seem to always get renewed!! What is this world coming to?
This is a great show…really hope it comes back! It is really diverse and I think it gives an outlook on life that most people won’t get anywhere except TV.
The medical parts were very run of the mill. Hard to get behind the characters so I’m not holding my breath. Recycled ideas with some recycled actors playing recycled parts is not going to cut it. The studios built up an infrastructure in Hawaii because of Lost and decided to start filming other series there so it seems like a network accountant came up with the idea for this show (ER in a jungle).
I Loved this show! It’s better than Grey’s Anatomy… It’s different of everything I have seen! ‘Off the Map’ can not be cancelled! PLEASE!!!!!!!!
I loved the show . hope it comes back for another season
I absolutely loved this show. I have loved Grey’s Anatomy but at times, it just didn’t cut it, especially last season…has improved the 2010-2011 season. Off the Map just fits the bill, but, of course, the time period isn’t one of the greatest. Give it another chance, please, please, please!
I loved Off the Map. I hope they return soon. It will be very disappointing if it does not return. It had a great story line about helping south america country in need.
i loved this too i also think it it better then greys anatomy. i like the ideal of doctors working in south american jungle with they have heal people and i like the cast too. and i am huge fan so i hope it will retun
I love the series, the fresh story-line, and the well-constructed characters. The scenery is refreshing and romantic. I miss it so much as do many of my contemporaries. My 23-year-old granddaughter is on a mission trip to 11 countries in 11 months including Central American countries. I felt a real connection with the characters and natives in and around the clinic. Please, bring it back! Thank you!!!
I loved this show. I think it was better than Grey’s Anatomy. If people would just give it a chance. The show got better every week. I am a huge fan. I am so hoping it will return.
