Before Once Upon a Time was renewed for its seventh season, word broke that Jennifer Morrison was leaving after season six on ABC. Next it was confirmed that — aside from Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, and Colin O’Donoghue — pretty much the rest of the main cast was also exiting Storybrooke, including Emilie de Ravin, Rebecca Mader, Jared Gilmore, and even Snow White and Prince Charming, i.e. Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas.
Since the Once Upon a Time season six finale, “The Final Battle,” gave the Charmings their happy ending, fans have been wondering whether or not any of the departing cast might guest star in the seventh season on ABC. While it was already known that Morrison would reprise the role of Emma Swan for one episode in season seven, ’til now, we were unsure if fan favorites Goodwin and Dallas might return in the new installment.
In an email interview with Mary Margaret Blanchard’s alter-ego, Entertainment Weekly asked the star about leaving the series, how she felt about her character’s fate in the season six finale, as well as whether or not she’d be willing to make additional appearances. Here’s more:
What was that conversation like with Josh when you guys were deciding this would be your final season?
“Hey, let’s call Eddy and Adam to talk about where our very special arc is headed.” — Ginny
“What a wonderful notion, Ginny. You have EXTRAORDINARY ideas! And have I told you lately that you’re ALWAYS right?” — JoshHow do you feel about how the story ends for Snow and Charming?
Selfishly, I’m pleased as punch. They got exactly what they wanted: dramatic, epic love balanced with normalcy (Snow’s word) and the space to indulge in both. Actually, it’s not an “end.” The final chapter of this story line is a continuation… which is kind of Snow’s own point in the finale.Would you return in the future — either next season or for whatever ends up being the series finale?
In keeping with the aforementioned continuation-as-happy-ending, OF COURSE I (and we) will be back. It’s merely time for ONCE to focus on something new because ONCE does “new” extremely well.
Meanwhile, THR asked creators and showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz which characters, besides Emma, could pop up in the seventh season. Check it out.
Besides Jennifer Morrison, who will return for one episode and who has promised to pop back in?
Kitsis: Everybody has said they’d be willing to come back. As our show is and has been for six years, we see people come back all the time. Rose McIver came back and she is the lead of her own show The CW‘s iZombie, which was also renewed], so we hope to be seeing everybody.
Horowitz: While we tried to really wrap up a lot of their stories and give a nice send off to these characters we’ve loved being with for six years, they’re still part of the universe, so hopefully we’ll be seeing different people at different times.
So while it’s over, it is possible we will see some of our departing favorites, like Snow and Charming, again. Still, we grabbed a few of their early character gallery photos from the ABC press site, just in case they’re removed, next season. So pretty.
What do you think? Do you hope Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas will make a guest appearance in the new installment of Once Upon a Time? Will you watch the ABC TV show with or without them?
Gosh did not say they will return as guests during their interview with EW.
Definitely would be nice to see more of Snow and Charming from time to time – they haven’t been in every episode in the series as it is. But, yes, I would still watch without them as long as the new stories for the adult Henry, Regina, Rumple and new characters are good. Every season the show has had new characters from different stories or books for one or more episodes which helps keep it fresh: Cruella, the “Frozen” sisters, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Dr Frankenstein, Alice (in Wonderland), Dorothy (Oz), Red Riding Hood, etc.
Even though we may not see Goshbthos season, they may return in future seasons (as Ginnifer spoiled) as regulars again.
The Charmings might not be back for s7, but maybe they might return as regulars for a season 8 and beyond if the show continues renewing. And it might thanks to Netflix’s support.
The show has been totally broken up. Not sure it will be same enough to garner my continued viewing. Time will tell. It has been fun thus far & best wishes to all the departing cast.
I’ll keep watching regardless but I loved all the characters and wish them all well and I absolutely loved the season finally, I hope to see all the characters again..
