The Originals wrapped up its fourth season on CW on Friday night, and fans will have a long wait for the return of the series.
Why the long wait for the return of this series?
CW did not add The Originals to its fall schedule. The network is holding back the series, which started as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, to midseason. That means at least a late 2016 start, but more than likely the series will return to CW in January.
The decision to hold the series for midseason was discussed by Mark Pedowitz at the CW Upfronts earlier this week. According to TV Line, he said:
“We have a very strong schedule. We still believe quite a bit in The Originals. We only have 10 hours, so we made a choice to [hold it] to further boost our schedule at midseason.”
As a fan of this series, this writer was confused by the announcement of the delay to midseason. In a recent interview, Julie Plec talked about future crossovers between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals for next season, but the creator wants to have those opportunities come up organically.
A delay for one of the series cuts off the opportunities for those moments. The two shows have different casts and stories, but even after three years on the air, The Originals has shown that it is still very much connected to the world of The Vampire Diaries.
SPOILER ALERT. On the finale, Klaus sacrificed himself in order for all of his siblings to live. Freya created a spell that would put her siblings to sleep after Marcel had her poisoned and bit Elijah and Kol. Klaus was daggered, and the final moments saw Marcel hiding him away behind bricks. Hayley drove off and left New Orleans with four caskets and Hope. Her mission is to find cures for the Mikaelsons.
Right now, it looks like she will be looking for that cure for nine months. That is a one very long wait. Are you surprised that CW did not put The Originals on their fall schedule? Tell us what you think.
Add another coffin because that long of a wait for the next season will probably finish off that series. It can be a complicated series and to wait that long to see again will probably lose a lot of viewers like me who will forget what was happening and be lost when it starts up again.
This is so not right ! Finally had a reason to stay home on a Friday and watch CW -The Originals and now I have to wait …just not right leaving Klause behind a wall that long..Guess I will come back to the CW in January to see what happens. :/

Why do networks make such stupid choices
To shelf “The Originals” would be like driving the 1st nail in the coffin to the “CW” network. This season marks the “BEST” for the “CW” network when it comes to” TVD” and “The Originals”. It has captured viewers of ALL ages. Both shows are magnificent on their own as well as crossovers. To concentrate on catering to a more youthful audience with Arrow,Supergirl,Flash,& DC Legends with or without crossovers will prove to show a GREAT DECLINE in viewers. I really hate that the CW will postpone season 4bof the Originals. The acting is superb! The writers ability to write for an audience with a higher IQ than the usual show is phenomenal. It appears the network is infusing its schedule with super heroes. I guess it’s trying to get the teen population as its audience. Very sad.
The CW REALLY need to reconsider their decision to push for The Originals back to mid season. Why fix something that isn’t broken? Instead wha ever new series they’re trying to launch you’d think they know you don’t take a well doing series on a prime night (Friday) to introduce something new…really stupid move. I won’t be joining them until The Originals return.
The Originals is my favorite tv show by far I don’t understand why we the fans have to wait until 2017 to see it again, its already bad enough I thought I had to wait until around October 2016 to tune in to my favorite show please bring it back to its regular release date. 9 months is to long to wait !!!
This was a great season for The Originals.TVD had a weak one and should have ended this season with a crossover story for some characters ( Caroline) heading to New Orleans. I think it is a mistake to wait so long.to start season 4..think they will have trouble getting viewers to start watching again after so long a wait and that will lead to trouble with the network.

I am so upset to hear that The Originals is going to be delayed 🙁 As a busy mom of three I make sure to watch every episode on Friday night’s. This is one of the only shows I actually watch!!! Can’t wait for the return, just disappointed to have to wait so long…
The Originals & The Vampire Dairies are the best shows ever hands down!! Upset i have to wait untill midseason for the series to come back.
I really hate it I fall in love with a show and really have to wait to see if it return for a new season. I enjoy the originals and I have watch it from the start but I will wait on its return in Jan I can’t do anything about but wait. I love the show and vampires dairies too. I love The Originals, my favorite show. Not sure why the late start or if they will have fewer episodes next season. They should have moved one of their soap opera comefies to mid-season instead

I love the Originals its one of my favorite series! I always looked forward to it returning every fall. Why such a long wait CW?
