The Originals wrapped up its fourth season on CW on Friday night, and fans will have a long wait for the return of the series.
Why the long wait for the return of this series?
CW did not add The Originals to its fall schedule. The network is holding back the series, which started as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, to midseason. That means at least a late 2016 start, but more than likely the series will return to CW in January.
The decision to hold the series for midseason was discussed by Mark Pedowitz at the CW Upfronts earlier this week. According to TV Line, he said:
“We have a very strong schedule. We still believe quite a bit in The Originals. We only have 10 hours, so we made a choice to [hold it] to further boost our schedule at midseason.”
As a fan of this series, this writer was confused by the announcement of the delay to midseason. In a recent interview, Julie Plec talked about future crossovers between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals for next season, but the creator wants to have those opportunities come up organically.
A delay for one of the series cuts off the opportunities for those moments. The two shows have different casts and stories, but even after three years on the air, The Originals has shown that it is still very much connected to the world of The Vampire Diaries.
SPOILER ALERT. On the finale, Klaus sacrificed himself in order for all of his siblings to live. Freya created a spell that would put her siblings to sleep after Marcel had her poisoned and bit Elijah and Kol. Klaus was daggered, and the final moments saw Marcel hiding him away behind bricks. Hayley drove off and left New Orleans with four caskets and Hope. Her mission is to find cures for the Mikaelsons.
Right now, it looks like she will be looking for that cure for nine months. That is a one very long wait. Are you surprised that CW did not put The Originals on their fall schedule? Tell us what you think.
I am very disappointed!! I love The Originals! I love Vamp Diaries and with it being the LAST season I’m gonna need The Originals to be the shoulder I cry on!!!!!
If than cancel The Originals I will be Beyond upset!!!!

We’ve been waiting for the originals to return and are very…..disappointed it’s being held back. Definitely one of our favourite shows! Please don’t cancel it….
Well number one I can’t say that I am extremely disappointed you carried me through every single week with a great storyline and now until 2017?? I never really got into the Vampire Diaries I want to see someone from The Originals I guess I’m going to have to watch sincerely yours one comes out beaver in Oregon

I love the Originals and think it is real bad that they are leaving it out of the Fall schedule! We have a whole group of women that watch the show together and will really miss it.
What is mid season? Will that cut down on the number of episodes? This is truly crappy . I love the VD’s, but I’m not understanding the difference. They’re both vampire based, but when Elena’s character left, it seemed a little contrived, as if they were reaching for stories. Atleast TO were constant. I agree with one of the commented when they asked, where do u get ur info from when it comes cancelled, renewd or waiting to mid season.

So disappointed that we have to wait for The Originals to start midseason & after TVD has begun. Where do the Networks get their viewing info numbers? It’s wrong!!!!!
Please oh please bring back my favorite show, the Originals is a hundred times better than The Vampire Diaries. I don’t even watch the Vampire Diaries anymore, it’s boring to me.

Disappointed we have to wait for sure. Maybe it’s time for tv stations to TOTALLY rethink the concept of “seasons” since for the most part they already no longer exist. Have fall seasons that start in September and end in December. Have spring seasons that start in January and end in May. And have a summer season from May to August. NO MORE STUPID SCHEDULE BREAKS. The Originals is my all-time favorite show, replacing the Vampire Diaries in my heart. I’m very sad that the fans have to wait extra time for it to come back but I just pray that the reasoning is in fact because the CW wand their mid season to be extra strong. If this show ever gets cancelled I’m not sure what I would do. I love all of the characters as well as the actors that play them. I have watched TVD since it started and I like it. But I love the Originals this is by far the better one of the 2 it needs to be aired and put TVD on the back burner.
