Earlier this week, NBC announced their mid-season schedule and, not surprisingly, low-rated Prime Suspect wasn’t on it. Supposedly NBC execs hadn’t cancelled the show and would still be “considering their options” until all 13 episodes had aired.
Now comes word that production will be shutting down before the holiday. The cast and crew were reportedly informed of the season wrap on Monday afternoon, as NBC was announcing their schedule. It surely wasn’t a surprise. Mario finishing episode 12 now and will complete number 13 before closing up shop.
There won’t be any more episodes produced for this season, despite the fact that the network ordered another half dozen scripts. Though NBC isn’t officially saying that Prime Suspect is cancelled, the cast and crew have been told that there won’t be a second season.
Theoretically, Prime Suspect could be brought back next season but that would mean that the network would have to put a lot of money into promoting a show that had been off the air for nine months, a show that couldn’t muster strong ratings after a big launch. Thus far the show’s averaged a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.97 million viewers.
There’s simply no reason for the network to spend any more resources on Prime Suspect. For whatever reason, most of the network just weren’t interest in this TV series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Prime Suspect is being cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

My husband and I rarely watch network TV but was pleasantly surprised when Prime Suspect came along. That is a great show with good storylines and superb acting Now we read it’s being cancelled? Back to the History channel, Smithsonian, etc.
When I saw the commercials, I thought this looks really goofy. When I watched the show I thought, wow, this is a great show! Real life characters, with honest personalities. PLEASE, don’t drop it.
So sad to see Prime Suspect cancelled. Love the show. Great dialogue.
This was the BEST network show in years….the ONLY one we watched besides news. Why do we get rehashes of the same old stuff and something original like this gets cancelled? It’s WHY the networks are losing to cable channels!
Really too bad. I agree with others comments. Why does the network get rid of the best, most intellignet, worth-watching shows? One of my favorites, one of the few shows I watch regularly. Cast is fabulous….script is good. A definite loss for tv programming! I say, BRING IT BACK!
of course it was cancelled, it did not have pretty empty headed YOUNG people, it had intelligent writing, and it was aimed at a MATURE audience.
I am really disappointed on the cancellation. I agree that it was one of the best I had seen in the genre in quite some time. What a shame.
This was an amazing show – the best cop show since NYPD Blue. I can’t believe that shows do not get a time slot to succeed and then are cut! What an industry!
I loved this show. One of the best on TV.
So disappointed that Prime Suspect was cancelled. Loved the characters and story lines. So much better than cutesy characters and impossible story lines on shows like Castle, the Mentalist.
GREAT SHOW. Seems like for the past several years that NBC has consistently cancelled good shows and put on crap. I may as well make the jump to FOX with everyone else.
Yes, I liked this show. Wish it would have been continued.
I loved this show! I loved this show, Maria Bello rocked the roll and I’m hoping the network will re-consider.
We are so sad to see this excellent program go. Seems like the only one that really got cops. Great characters!
Outstanding show. Very disappointed to learn that it will be cancelled. Hope the network reconsiders.
