Though it was looking like the underperforming CW series had a chance at survival, the network has decided to pull the plug on Privileged.
Privileged follows the story of Megan Smith (Joanna Garcia), a perky young journalist who becomes a live-in tutor for two wealthy teenage girls (Lucy Hale and Ashley Newbrough). Others in the cast include Michael Cassidy, Allan Louis, Brian Hallisay, Kristina Apgar, and Anne Archer.
Despite positive reviews and buzz, Privileged debuted on September 9, 2008 to just 2.64 million viewers and a 1.2/3 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. Those numbers weren’t great for the junior network and ratings for subsequent episodes fell significantly over the rest of the season.
The network made multiple attempts to boost the show’s audience — giving it more exposure by rerunning episodes in various timeslot — but most viewers just didn’t seem to be particularly interested.
Though the ratings certainly hadn’t mandated it, the network had been considering bringing Privileged back for another season. A few weeks ago, it was announced that the CW would rerun the series during the summer months, an indication that the series still potentially had a future.
But, though Privileged matches the CW’s target demographic, the network has ultimately decided to cancel it. The CW has several potentially strong new series in the hopper and would rather take a chance on them.
Following the cancellation news, series creator Rina Mimoun wrote to Michael Ausiello, “It’s truly heartbreaking. I’m so grateful to everyone out there who supported our little show and fell in love with Megan Smith. She was the most delightful character I’ve ever had the pleasure to write and watching JoAnna Garcia bring her to life every day was a gift I will never forget.”
She concluded, “I’m incredibly proud of the work we did and forever indebted to all the fans, critics and to Warner Bros. for being so wonderful and supportive. I will miss this more than you know.”
How would Megan’s story have ended? We may likely never find out.

Please put this show back on!!! I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so sad. I still have the finale on my DVR. I loved Megan and the gang. I hope it comes back!
CW kept on canceling great shows. Privileged being canceled was like is a repeat in history. CW did the same in Veronica Mars. Just when the crowd gets the hang on great shows like these two, CW spoils the fun.
i feelll sooo bittterr..first of..i was googling priveleged season two..and to find out that it was cancelled..it sucks! damn! i’m an asian from the philippine DiDo to Aireen of philippines… she’s right,,!!!,,,

I’m so pissed off. I loved this showw!!!~
BRING IT BACKKKK! (please) 🙁
This is typical of the CW network never giving the underdog a chance. They axed Veronica Mars and now Privileged… this sux
I really enjoyed Privileged, it was one of the 2 shows I religiously watching on TV. I am sad to hear it is not returning this fall. I was so looking forward to it.
Privileged was a show that I wouldn’t miss. It’s one of those shows where re-runs do not get boring. and now its gone!? Let’s do whatever we can to bring it back ! It was an amazing show, and it still will be!!!
they should have just added more talent to the cast to get more viewers though i liked the show the way it was.
Go to the CW website and tell them that they made a mistake….this show was soooo good!!!!!!
I am mad that the show is canceled i was looking forward to watching it this fall wtf! why dont they stop showing gossip girl that show is stupid!
I was very dissapointed when I found out this show would not be returning for season two!!! It was the only show I had to look foward too! It must not have been gory or vulgar enough to get America’s attention!
I thought this was a great show! I was looking forward to watching it this Fall. I am so surprised to find out this show was canceled. If The CW is so concerned about their ratings maybe they shouldn’t have 4 week breaks in the middle of the seasons, I’m actually surprised to find out 90210 was able to air a second season for the same reason. I usually don’t watch The CW, most of the shows are not appealing to me, I was a Beverly Hills 90210 Fan and that is how I started watching Privileged since it aired… Read more »
