Over the past year, TNT really cleaned house by cancelling several of their drama series. They’re supposedly now favoring “edgier” series. Does Proof, a show that focuses on death and the afterlife, fit with that new strategy? How will it do in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On Proof, Doctor Carolyn “Cat” Tyler (Jennifer Beals) recently lost her son, saw her marriage end, and become estranged to her teenage daughter. Cat is persuaded by cancer-stricken billionaire Ivan Turing (Matthew Modine) to search for evidence that death is not the end and this takes her on a deeply personal and emotional journey. The rest of the cast includes David Sutcliffe, Joe Morton, Edi Gathegi, Caroline Rose Kaplan, Callum Blue, and Annie Thurman.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
8/18 update: If you ran TNT, would you cancel or keep this series?
9/24 update: TNT has cancelled Proof after one season. Details here.
Final season averages: 0.31 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.12 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like watching the Proof TV series on TNT? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Love the show, definitely renew!!!!!
OK guys, you just made my point when I say that the last show was completely off message. Myself and so many others like myself watch and love this show for the ‘afterlife’ subject, and for the Turning character who tugs at our heart strings. He wasn’t even in this show and the closest we came to a ‘ghost’ was a homeless man. And now we ( faithful watchers) are all involved with what a quadroon or an octoroon is or is not. Isn’t that subject for another show? And would somebody please fire the director…Everybody is getting tired of… Read more »
I don’t understand your dislike of Beals and how the director is developing her character. She is the best part of the show, compelling, very charming and, at 51, is looking great. She must be a bit hard headed for the basic premise of the show to work; she must be skeptical of possible afterlife. As far hard hearted, if you want to see that to its unpleasant limits, watch “How to Get Away with Murder,” a most over-rated show.
I enjoyed the mixed race part. I don’t, however, think the writer/writers did the actress justice by portraying her as a cold hearted, grief stricken heart surgeon that only believes in what she can feel, hear and pull out of a body! Not quite as bad as the robotic “Bones”, just meaner sounding. I’ll watch it this season. That’s all.
Jennier Beals’ new series, “Proof,” revealed on the July 28 episode that the heroine’s parents were white (mother) and black (father). Beals’ TV husband and daughter are also white (as is the case in real life). The nice thing about that episode is that no one made a big deal out of it or expressed shock. Note some of the ignorant comments from people who are sure that the heroine and her daughter are too white to be partially descended from a black father/grandfather. I have news for them, White genes are not the weaklings of the human race and… Read more »
Totally agree with Robert Evans. The show was ok then last nights showing they introduce Jennifer’s parents. No problem with mixed marriages but at leased keep the mix going through the off spring. Who made this gaff? The auditions is not stupid. Not believable.
Look up Quadroons. It’s totally believable because Quadroons and even Octoroons exist and are white not mixed looking. There’s tons of examples of Quadroons. My daughter is a Quadroon and she is not brown skinned or mixed looking, she is so white, a KKK member tried recruiting not knowing she is mixed. Quadroons and Octoroons have existed since Europeans began intermix ing with blacks and that goes as far back as Africa when the French, English and Dutch began claiming African land. They would place their mixed offspring in a place of leadership to be loyal to the crown and… Read more »
I have been wondering why I keep watching this show. I loved the premise but it just isn’t clicking lately. After tonight’s show (with the introduction of her parents) the show is finished for us. Tired of BS being shoved down our throats and that is just what they are doing. And just like others who have quit watching for the same reason, they aren’t even realistic about it.
You really screwed up on this one. Should have paid more attention to the “life after death” theme.
Because she’s biracial? Bet you’d still watch it if she were white only though, right? Surprise, Jennifer Beal is biracial in real life. Sorry that reality interferes with your closed -off view of the world.
Proof on TNT deals with a complex issue of a near death experience and life after death. They incorporated all the latest technology possible, thought of the human impacts using that knowledge while introducing other character complications in the story line. The writing and acting was excellent. To cover the topic of life after death they will need many seasons highlight the many aspects of what happens when we pass. Proof continues to be not only ‘Must See TV’ but ‘Essential TV’. I have had multiple NDEs and you can read about them for them for FREE in my book.… Read more »
Totally agree with Robert Evans and Mark G..will no longer be watching this show.
Please cancel this show and bring something of substance. It’s wasting space. This is not Jennifer Beal’s relaunch niche. She deserves better.
When this show first came on both my husband and I had mixed emotions however we have come to like the show. It’s different and interesting. I do not like the Jennifer Beals character because she has absolutely zero warmth or charm or anything appealing. That being said, the premise is still interesting in spite of her.
This is well written and well acted. A first class show. Please renew.
I like the show but i’ve been wondering from the beginning if Jennifer Beals was supposed to black, white or mixed, seeing as how she has a white ex husband and her children are both as white as snow, then suddenly we meet her parents!! Her is white and her father is Glynn Turman, almost as dark a black man as you can get, how in the heck can his grandchildren be so white?? Who did the casting on this show? Those kids would be mocha color with curly hair, and yes i am a Black man, so come on!
Not being racist but agree it’s a totally not believable premise that taints everything else about what could be a good show
Because Quadroon’s are 1/4th black and 3/4th white, that’s how. One biracial parent and one white. Nicole Richie has Quadroon children as do many others. My daughter was platinum blond from birth. She now is indistinguishable from other Caucasians. Assuming they must look mixed is quite ignorant. Open your eyes! Mixed people come in all colors. My mother is dark skinned, I am biracial and my daughter is white. Simple! Wake up people, mixed people are nothing new!

I love this show. I will be grossly disappointed if it is not renewed. This is the best show that any station has developed in a very long time. Kudos!
I really enjoy Proof. Something different for a change now.
There is nothing in this series to hold my attention.Three of my friends feel the same way.We have stopped watching it..There is nothing solid in this show .By all means cancel it.
Never miss the show, set DVR for all episodes, watch each episode at least twice. Even though it is leaning more and more towards a soap opera, it remains interesting and different from the same old same old crime scene series and sit-coms.
