Many medical dramas have succeeded on television and many more have failed. The Pure Genious TV show is a bit unique as it mixes medical cases with high tech. Is this a winning combination for CBS when it comes to the ratings? Is this TV series worth watching? Should Pure Genius be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Pure Genius follows top medical professionals as they team up with cutting-edge tech experts and try to push the boundaries of modern medicine to save lives. Doctor Walter Wallace (Dermot Mulroney) is a disgraced but brilliant surgeon who is recruited by a young Silicon Valley tech billionaire, James Bell (Augustus Prew). Wallace learns that Bell is harboring a secret and he begins to question just what the young founder is really trying to achieve. Others on the team are played by Odette Annable, Reshma Shetty, Aaron Jennings, Ward Horton, and Brenda Song.
Pure Genius debuted on October 27th with a 1.05 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic with 6.23 million viewers. It was not a good start and the show’s ratings have gotten even worse. The second episode dropped to a 0.88 rating with 5.37 million.
The numbers have risen and fallen a bit over the course of eight episodes that have aired so far. The show’s averaging a 0.9 demo rating with 5.39 million viewers. Pure Genius is currently CBS’ second-lowest rated scripted TV series (behind Elementary, which airs on Sunday nights at 10pm).
It’s already been revealed that CBS won’t be ordering any more episodes for season one of Pure Genius. Though the network hasn’t cancelled the show, it’s highly unlikely that CBS will be bringing it back for a second season either.
Pure Genius is off the schedule for the holiday but will return in a special timeslot on Sunday, January 1st, at roughly 9pm (it may be delayed because of football). The remaining installments will air on Thursday nights at 10pm. Right now, it looks like the (likely series) finale will air on January 26th.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Pure Genius TV show? Is the show better than the ratings seem to indicate? Should the network cancel or keep it?

I thought that “Pure Genius” was a great show and was looking forward to another season. I am very disappointed that CBS cancelled the show.
Please do not cance I Pure Genius is the best show you havr
please do not cancel I really looked forward to the show every week
Please do not cancel Pure Genius. It is innovative and gives hope for the future. It is one of CBS best shows.
We don’t need innovative medical shows with incredible actors making their characters totally believable. We don’t need amazing sets and technical ideas that amaze us. We don’t need a thought provoking series that comes up with new ways to heal people. We certainly don’t need a billionaire tech genius with a can do attitude, who never gives up, and continues to save lives with his innovations. We nee more shows like walking dead. We need a government who will take this crisis seriously. They aren’t even preparing for the coming zombie apocalypse. We definitely need more shows that fit the… Read more »
My goodness, aren’t you jaded! Yes, it is quite sad that so much programing is geared to the lowest common denominator.
Wow, if this is how you feel about the mean intelligence of our nation then our future is lost. The thought that individuals are not mentally capable to think beyond a 5th grade level is very discriminating and belittling. For those who do enjoy shows that involve a higher level of thinking appreciate shows that don’t make us feel stupid because we are not able to lower our intelligence to such a low level of thinking.
This is the best show since Friends! Looked forward to watching it every week. Please bring it back!!
Please do not cancel this show. It is not the run of the mill medical show and is quite inspiring.
I LOVE THIS SHOW– LISTEN TO YOUR PEOPLE- WE WANT THIS SHOW- I IS WONDERFUL!!!!!
Please do not cancel this show. My husband and I are retired school teachers and we watched and enjoyed every episode. When our pre-med grandson came over from the university on weekends he also enjoyed watching it.
I love this show! Please do not cancel.
This show is by far one of the BEST ever on TV. The cast, the plots. I’ve had more people talking about this show than Seinfeld!!!! Huge mistake if you don’t bring it back.
Please do not cancel this show; the med technology plus emotional situations for patients and families is outstanding. Need to know what happens after use of research med for patient with same disease as founder of the hospital. I wait for it to come on each Thursday evening.
This is an intelligent, innovative show. One of the best. Bring it back. We miss it.
This show is smart and unique . its ratings are flying into some head wins given its time slot. NBC Aires Chicago med on this night and ABC has its best night on Thursday night. People love medical dramas but with 2 competing medical dramas on this night its hard to watch three in a night. Monday Wednesday Friday and Sunday nights may bring better ratings. Especially Monday nights
Please give it time to find its audience peak. Remember shows like MASH Seinfeld, hill street blues, and others took more then one season to find theirs.
Really enjoy the show & hope it continues-fun to see new & innovative medical solutions
I really enjoy the show. Hope it is back for a second season.
