Many medical dramas have succeeded on television and many more have failed. The Pure Genious TV show is a bit unique as it mixes medical cases with high tech. Is this a winning combination for CBS when it comes to the ratings? Is this TV series worth watching? Should Pure Genius be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Pure Genius follows top medical professionals as they team up with cutting-edge tech experts and try to push the boundaries of modern medicine to save lives. Doctor Walter Wallace (Dermot Mulroney) is a disgraced but brilliant surgeon who is recruited by a young Silicon Valley tech billionaire, James Bell (Augustus Prew). Wallace learns that Bell is harboring a secret and he begins to question just what the young founder is really trying to achieve. Others on the team are played by Odette Annable, Reshma Shetty, Aaron Jennings, Ward Horton, and Brenda Song.
Pure Genius debuted on October 27th with a 1.05 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic with 6.23 million viewers. It was not a good start and the show’s ratings have gotten even worse. The second episode dropped to a 0.88 rating with 5.37 million.
The numbers have risen and fallen a bit over the course of eight episodes that have aired so far. The show’s averaging a 0.9 demo rating with 5.39 million viewers. Pure Genius is currently CBS’ second-lowest rated scripted TV series (behind Elementary, which airs on Sunday nights at 10pm).
It’s already been revealed that CBS won’t be ordering any more episodes for season one of Pure Genius. Though the network hasn’t cancelled the show, it’s highly unlikely that CBS will be bringing it back for a second season either.
Pure Genius is off the schedule for the holiday but will return in a special timeslot on Sunday, January 1st, at roughly 9pm (it may be delayed because of football). The remaining installments will air on Thursday nights at 10pm. Right now, it looks like the (likely series) finale will air on January 26th.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Pure Genius TV show? Is the show better than the ratings seem to indicate? Should the network cancel or keep it?

My daughter and I watch it each week. It’s the only tv show that draws us in with its plot twists and technological approaches. We smile and we cry while watching. It gives us hope for the future of medicine. Please don’t cancel it.
Really… so networks keep the not-so-funny sitcoms which appeal to…well… not really sure unless it is the 18 year olds and NOT keep a unique show like Pure Genius? Please keep this show on the air. It is a breath of fresh air compared to all the sitcoms, reality and zombie shows. Keep Pure Genius for all of the adults out there! please…..
It’s all about cost. This show can’t be cheap. The sets and production values look amazing, and the cast is sizable, most of whom are fairly well known; Dermont Mulroney’s paycheck alone is likely just as sizable. Of coarse, these are all reasons why it is such a great show. Making a quality show with solid writing, a great cast, and beautiful production values isn’t cheap, so unless it gets incredible ratings, they just can’t afford to keep making it, the money isn’t there in advertising. Same thing happened to Kings back in 2009 on NBC. I’m sure it doesn’t… Read more »
One of the best shows I have seen in a long time. Hope they keep the show.
Pure Genius IS pure genius!! Love this show so much PLEASE don’t cancel!
Wife and I really enjoy this hour every week since it first aired. We have looked forward to each and every episode. Please continue to maybe try different time slots to keep it on the air.
Great cast, we like all of the cast.
I watch a lot of television and this is the only show, currently, that I know of that leaves you with a good feeling EVERY time. Ok, so maybe it’s a little far fetched that every patient survives…but IT’S NOT REAL, it’s entertainment. Isn’t the purpose of entertainment to entertain?! Pure Genius does this weekly. Why does everything on television have to be a ‘reality’ show? We have enough ‘reality’ to deal with on a daily basis. Wake up CBS and allow Pure Genius to be the genius entertainment it was intended to be! Please continue to allow it’s viewers… Read more »
Keep this show!! Love it!
My wife and I liked the show a lot. The high tech aspect and the emotional side was refreshing. Would like to see that she’ll come back
I really like this show…now more than the beginning. Would be a shame to not see it in the future. It’s high tech, comforting, far fetched, emotional…it’s got everything
Not many shows stir this kind of emotional response. Ive been in the medical field for the last 21 years. This is what medicine should be. Thank you. Hope you keep the show.
Love the show…please don’t cancel
Please keep this show. One of the only shows worth watching.
Love it, please keep it
Love this off the mainstream medical drama. May be unbelievable techniques, futuristic medical setting isn’t meeting approval of network”Bigs” , but quirkiness is what fascinates me as viewer. Bring it back & let it grow on viewers!
As a retired doctor, I really enjoy this show. In medicine we all want the best for our patients and new discoveries and techniques in real life are exciting and hopeful. This show gives me that feeling of hope and the joy of saving a really sick patient. I think the actors do a good job portraying medical personnel and I really enjoy Augustus Prew as the genius billionaire. My husband feels the show is unbelievable as almost every patient is saved; maybe a few more dying patients would make it seem more believable to non-medical people? Anyway, I really… Read more »
