It doesn’t take a brilliant mind to have seen this coming. Today, it was revealed that CBS had officially cancelled Pure Genius after one season.
The drama follows top medical professionals as they team up with cutting-edge tech experts and try to push the boundaries of modern medicine to save lives. The cast includes Augustus Prew, Dermot Mulroney, Odette Annable, Reshma Shetty, Aaron Jennings, Ward Horton, and Brenda Song.
Early on, CBS decided not to order more episodes of Pure Genius, suggesting the show was headed for cancellation. Over the course of its first season, the series earned pretty low ratings, averaging a 0.86 in the 18-49 demo and only 5.34 million viewers.
Recently, star Augustus Prew said he thinks the show didn’t work because it underwent an identity crisis:
But if I’m being honest, I think we got caught between two different shows. I think CBS wanted something a little more procedural, and [executive producer] Jason [Katims, of Friday Night Lights/Parenthood fame] wanted something a little more character-driven.”
What do you think? Did you see Pure Genius? Do you think CBS should’ve renewed it for a second season?
I was looking forward to seeing where they would take this show and I will miss it
My wife and I loved this show.
When kids are Interested in a show like Pure Genius, where they learn of possible new advancements in technology, that’s a big bonus!! My grandkids watch Scorpion, pure Genius, history channel etc. You get it!! And they are high Achiever’s in school. They Want to learn more about whats out there. And this is what we are supposed to teach them. To make this a better and advanced world.
I liked this show and I am disappointed CBS.
such a waste of an excellent show, Have too worry about CBS priorities.
I love the show cbs should really reconsider and give us a season 2. I never watched cbs until this show came on now back to now watching cbs again
I am very sad that CBS decided to cancel such a wonderful show. I couldn’t wait to watch it every week. It sent off such positive vibes and was really a good family show. The characters had such good interactions with each other. It needed to be in an earlier time slot. I really wish CBS would give it another chance–or some other network please pick up this wonderful show!! It showed what good that someone with money could do for the medical field. Very inspiring!!! Am so tired of all the violence and stupid game shows on TV these… Read more »
I agree with everyone replies Pure Genius was a excellent show and I think CBS should reconsider to at least give a second chance and put it in a better time slot or maybe they can find another home like Nashville did to continue too….think hard again CBS
How do we, the masses, become one of those viewers that affect the ratings? Perhaps then shows of value would remain for more than one season!
I’ve reached the point now where I usually record a whole season of any new show and wait to see if it is renewed before I bother to watch it because I don’t want to become interested in a show only to see it cancelled after one season. Pure Genius caught my interest enough that I actually watched it from the first episode and eagerly anticipated each new episode.
Cindy, call your cable company and ask for a “Nelson Box” more often than not they will give you one.
Loved the show— provided education in the future medical field. Sad it was cancelled while stupid & violent shows renewed..
What is wrong with the tv industry.. do they really think people with a brain want to be entertained with stupid “reality shows”, PS… no reality there… My husband and I are DOWN to about 6 hrs a week on tv shows…
I just loved the show and I’m sad that isn’t going to be a season 3 very disappointed
I can’t believe that CBS keeps cancelling great shows, only to keep totally ridiculously stupid shows. Well that will be even less t.v than I do now. Please reconsider your decision! !!!!
I loved the show! It was uplifting. A little drama, a little romance and positive! Mot many shows have that! I will miss it!!
Pure Genius was an absolutely incredible show that I felt delivered both character development along with enough procedural detail to satisfy the viewing public. How you can decide that a show isn’t worth a second season at this early stage is beyond me. When a show is first aired, there are many other shows competing for that same audience. Perhaps those other viewers might have been brought over to Pure Genius had it been given more time and promotion. This was a show that my 12 year old son and I looked forward to watching every week together. Considering the… Read more »
My children and I enjoyed it every single episode together as well. It was truly very inspirational……they can’t be unjust with Bunker Hill, with James Bell, Wallace and all the rest of the crew!
