FOX has announced that the three unaired episodes of Red Band Society will run on two consecutive Saturdays — January 31st and February 7th — but that will be the end of the series. There won’t be a second season.
A dramedy, Red Band Society revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
The series debuted in September to unimpressive ratings and the numbers got much worse in subsequent weeks. It was no surprise when FOX chose not to order any additional episodes. Traditionally, that’s a sure sign that a series will be cancelled but word is that FOX and ABC Studios each made efforts to keep it going.
Though Red Band Society’s ratings were too low to keep it on the air as a regular season show, the network wanted to keep it — potentially as a summer series. The catch is that that would have required a lower licensing fee. It’s a high-end series and budgets for summer shows are really tight. In the end, it’s not a big surprise that a deal couldn’t be worked out with the studio for FOX to keep it.
Execs at ABC Studios also really like the series so they tried shopping it to other outlets to keep the show alive. Ultimately there were no takers so the series is now dead.
Red Band Society will end its short run on February 7th with a pair of episodes. Hopefully the finale will give dedicated viewers some sense of closure.
What do you think? Did you like Red Band Society? Are you sorry that the show’s been cancelled? Would you have followed it to another channel?
I am totally bummed! This was an awesome series! I was so looking forward to the second season. Why do they always get rid of good series and keep the boring series?
this is bullsh-t, every time there is a good heart warming show this happens!!! SAVE RED BAND SOCIETY!!!!!
I’ve never liked it anything on Fox until now and only watched it because I was flipping channels before the first episode ever aired. Fell in love with the show and now that it’s been cancelled I’ll go back to my original opinion of Fox and go back to ABC and CBS. Thanks Fox for getting rid of the only decent show you’ve had on in years.
Loved the show.
I truly feel FOX made a big mistake by canceling the Red Band Society and not trying to move it to a new time slot and try to entice new viewers. This is a good realistic show and shows the compassion of humane life, and how we should help others who are struggling with tragedy we all face and how we can change for the better.
I ABSOUTLY LOVE THIS SHOW! The characters are intresting in their own way, and red band society has a great story line . I like the fact that charlie narrates throught the show and that separates this show from others. I cant see why anyone would want to cancelle the show.
It’s hard to find a show that my 16 year old son and 12 year old daughter both like as well as my husband. Really disappointed.
I love the Red Band Society! Please CBS, TNT, TBS, somebody pick up this great show!!!!
Man, I adore this show. Red Band society is one of the best written shows I have seen in a long time. I am not able to tune in on regular scheduled nights but, watch it first thing on Hulu when I have time. I am so sad and believe that another channel will not pick it up. Maybe they can make it a hulu only program.
I LOVED THIS SHOW and I’m very sad that it is going to be cancelled. Especially when there is so much junk on tv. I hope that someone picks it up and moves to another channell because I will be following it if does.
my wife and I both love red band and we would watch it on any network, if it had a better night or time spot might have helped the show who knows, but there is so much **** that keeps getting renewed like the mindy project or jane the virgin that it goes to show you that all main stream media is made to pander to the lowest common denominator. Ok sorry about the rant but most of the best shows from 2014 didn’t get picked up for 2nd season and all the dumb **** did, please try to keep… Read more »
I think the original pilot showed promise in an interesting direction, but the show became too quickly another serial show with children behaving foolishly and badly and the adults (the absent and promiscuous mother and the doctor bed hopping etc) became too much of the emphasis. I tuned out quickly after the beginning episode.
Maybe it is not as popular, but perhaps the show could have been a serial about positive aspects of kids like this dealing with their illnesses??? Just saying!
this series way to good to get cancelled. this may be a late pitch, but the acting is outstanding with an excellent story line. please reconsider and renew. you wont regret it.
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I think it would (have) picked up if they’d give it a bit more time. It’s not on the best night or time. But either way, it’s a wonderful show that is actually interesting, unlike so many other shows on right now. The characters are interesting, the stories are intriguing and the scenario is fascinating. It seems to be one of those GREAT shows that are just below the grid, like it needs an introduction for people to become aware of it. Once they get a chance to see it (after becoming aware of it), I… Read more »
Loved the show . I hope it picked up by another network.
Does Fox see all these responses ? Clearly public support exists. Fox and their Advertisers need to listen .Bring back the show. I won’t watch anything on Fox until you do. I suggest others not watch as well.
well said Peter, Fox does not care about viewers, i sent fox an email on their website and not had a reply. I hope that the Mindy show gets axed, not Red Band.
