ABC Family has decided to pass on ordering a second season of its freshman sitcom, Ruby & the Rockits.
In Ruby & the Rockits, former teen icon Patrick Gallagher (Patrick Cassidy) has been living quietly with his wife (Katie A. Keane) and their two sons, teenage Jordan (Austin Butler) and sarcastic preteen Ben (Kurt Doss).
Things change when Patrick’s former band-mate brother, David (David Cassidy), shows up with David’s previously unknown teenage daughter, Ruby (Alexa Vega). David doesn’t want to give up his show-biz life and leans on his brother to help raise his daughter, who’s a rising star on her own.
The show debuted on July 21st to 1.6 million viewers and 654,000 in the 18-49 demographic, making Ruby the second best sitcom launch in the network’s history. It even built out of the audience of fellow freshman comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

Unfortunately, those numbers didn’t hold up and the sitcom lost steam in the following weeks. While the network has renewed 10 Things for another 10 episodes, ABC Family has decided to dump Ruby after one short season.
The final episode is scheduled to air on Tuesday, September 22nd. In the episode, titled “Smells like Teen Drama,” Jordan and Ruby compete for the attention of the same girl. Privileged’s Lucy Hale guest stars as Ruby’s best friend and Jordan’s new girlfriend. Meanwhile, Ben is being bullied at school. David and Patrick want him to fight back while his mother has a very different point of view.

I loved this show!! I looked forward to it every week. Please do another, longer season ABC!!!!!!!!!!!
Big mistake & bigger disappointment. Give the show a chance! We are 49 & 50, and initially tuned in for the Cassidy nostalgia, but the characters were developing nicely, and we looked forward to seeing what was to happen. We don’t watch much “regular” TV, because once we do and become interested or fans, a show is cancelled. (Can you say “Starter Wife”?) Thought this one would be safe, at least for more than 10 episodes.
C’MON!!! Give the show a chance to do its thing. And how about just a little promotion?…
This is the first time our entire family has looked forword to watching a show that made us all laugh together. The cast did a wonderful Job and all deserve an emmy. The show was picked up so fast after Shaun and David came up with the Idea for the show. I know they had a very short time to put these together .They did an outstanding Job. I think they made a huge mistake by canceling Ruby and the Rockits. It was a fantastic show and pretty funny. I am sad about that.
Once again another show worthwhile is canceled. I don’t understand it. BRING IT BACK, ABCFAMILY!

Noooo ABC Family is making a hugeee mistake! Ruby and the Rockits is one of my favorite shows! I’m sure that if they gave it a second chance then Season two would have higher ratings.
ABC Family made a huge mistake in not renewing Ruby and the Rockits. This was a wholesome family show that had values, something that is sadly missing in many shows today.
I originally watched it because of David Cassidy but then the show itself kept me engaged. There are not many shows that both adults and children can watch and both groups be comfortable with the contents. Ruby and the Rockits was such a show.
I am sad that this show is over and hope that ABC Family would reconsider and give it another 10 episodes.

I was so excited to see David Cassidy return to TV along with his siblings…this show is VERY entertaining, and my husband & I watched it every week. This is a great family show for everyone in the family, you have to give it another chance! It’s a shame when good programming for families is taken off like this…..Bring it back for more seasons!
ABC family (hence the word family) is owned by Disney. I thought Disney was about good family shows my wife and I have our shows geared for adults but we enjoy watching good clean family shows with our kids. Disney needs to step in to keep it’s image up. Ruby is a good show I explain who the Cassidy’s are from when I was young and now to see them on tv and share some history and watch actors and singers with my kids I use to watch.

ABC Family Network has really errored in a big huge way by taking “Ruby and the Rockits” off the air, before the show can even have a chance to come back for a second season. Give it a chance… The show was really refreshing, and all generations are digging it. It may not be ABC Family network’s cup of tea, but its the viewers’ who are tuning in every Tuesday evening.
