Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?

Bottom line: Keep the show.
To NBC, consider when it started, the holidays, the super bowl and now Spring Break and basketball. This is a great show. I record every episode so I don’t miss anything. Keep it!!!
We are looking forward to another season of the show. Both of us have been captivated by the up-to-date plot scenarios and find the show well written and well acted. Thumbs up!!
Please renew this show, it is one of my favorites, along with the Blacklist! People who want to be challenged to think when they are watching TV need this show!
Love the show. If it conflicts u have a PVR. Absolutely nothing wrong with storyline and cast. However the storyline may get a little complicated for those who want straight forward plots and dialogue as it jumps from present to flashbacks of past events and characters. Prefer it to Madam secretary’s stiff performance.
This is one of the best shows since the Blacklist. To be honest, I watched the majority of it on Hulu because of my schedule, but I loved it. Give it chance for those of us that have to watch when we can. This is a smart and relevant show.
I find ‘State of Affairs’ to be intriguing, suspenseful and relevant to today’s politics. Each show develops the characters and plot so well that I anxiously await the next episode. Don’t cancel this show NBC, do a better job of promoting your line-up. As for Heigl, I have been a follower since her ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ days and I consider her a very good actress.
Keep it! Give it a chance. I think it is a great show and couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen each week. Shows get cancelled way to quick these days. Let people get to know them.
Keep this show. I find the plot very interesting. Keeps you guessing.
Actors are doing a fine job
Keep it on the air. It’s captivating with strong acting. It may also open up viewers to the real-life drama of what is happening in the world. It’s entertaining tv. Give it a chance.
I love your programs guys but ,i hate when you cancel or stop them just like that 🙁
Keep State of Affairs. I agree with Larry noted above .
NBC does a great job promoting a new show but once it’s out they go from run to crawl. I like this show and it’s got a cutting edge storyline. If NBC want me to continue watch there new shows they need to stop canceling them after a few episodes. Keep this on the air!
I watched the premier and never watched it again. It’s a shoot-em-up, blow-it-up teenage boy show. I am neither.
Get rid of Heigl. She is just not a likable person.
That would bring a well deserved burst of Laughter from Josh and her kids. I think KH is an excellent actor, a beautiful mom and a gorgeous woman. Those in Tinsel town who say otherwise can, as Tina Fey once so aptly put it, “Suck It”!
Do not drop “State of Affairs” but move it to Wednesday and follow it with “Allegiance” these two shows are well acted and need to be on the air. They show what the government is up against, in international affairs and are current, the story lines have relevance to todays world problems. Wednesday is a very weak NBC evenning from my point of view and these shows would do good in this slot. I love these shows and want to enjoy them for a longer time.
