Although CMT cancelled its Sun Records TV show after just one season, the song may continue. The Memphis Flyer reports producers are pitching season two to Amazon and The CW. A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
In Sun Records, Sam Phillips (Murray), shepherds young musicians Johnny Cash (Fonteyne), Elvis Presley (Milligan), Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees). These up-and-coming white musicians combine hillbilly country music, with the ’50s R&B sound of African-American artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King (Castro Coleman), Fats Domino, and Ike Turner (Holliday).
According to the report, Memphis Film and Television Commission boss Linn Sitler said Kevin Kane, president of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, paid the rent on the show’s soundstage here for another month, to give the producers time to pitch the show to other outlets. Here’s more:
CMT already paid for scripts and outlines for season two of the show, Sitler said. So, they are “ready to go” for a second season. She said she has her “fingers crossed” for the meetings with the other networks, though she said “it may be a long shot.”
About $9 million is already set aside in the state budget for season two and season three of “Sun Records.” However, if the show is not renewed, that money all goes back to Nashville in a pot set aside for other film and television projects across the state.
Sun Records hails from Thinkfactory Media. Leslie Greif executive produced the first season with showrunner Gil Grant. Barry Berg served as co-executive producer and Herb Nanas and Colin Escott served as producers. The series is based on the book, Million Dollar Quartet, written by Floyd Mutrux and Escott. CMT confirmed the series cancellation, back in May.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV show? Would you follow it to The CW or Amazon for a second season?
I loved it! Been waiting not so patiently for Season 2!!
I’ve been waiting to hear the good news since this article was posted. Sun Records was one of the best shows on TV this decade, I’m still hoping I’ll get to see all my favorite Sun Records legends get their starts, they could make this last 5 solid seasons easy.
I loved Sun Records, and am both shocked and disappointed that CMT cancelled it. It’s their best show, and if they have Deacon Clayborne hook up with any 1 womon , I will stop watching Nashville, because that means they don’t care about the storyline, which is the first sign of a show going bad. I hope The CW picks up Sun Records , I could use a good follow up to the best show on television: Supernatural!
YES! I want season 2 and would l follow it! Have been anxiously waiting!
please bring back season 2 I loved the show and with the millions of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis etc. fans the show should be a hit!
I loved the show. Sad to hear it’s not coming back. What a shame. It was drama that kept me engaged and yearning for more. Lots of trash on tv. Hard to find anything that so fulfills like sun records root of rock n roll. I thought they hit paydirt. Hard to believe its not worth a 2nd season. I would definitely pay for it.
My husband and I loved this show and I don’t watch very much TV, but we had seen the play and he’s a musician so on the off chance when I saw the coming attractions to Sun Studios, I said we have got to tune in and see the show. Then we were hooked. We loved seeing the history of these major musical icons. We were looking forward to the next season. I hope some venue picks it up, the whole series was well done with top notch actors.
Have not heard any more about Sun Records. A shame. It was a good show. CW? Amazon? CMT again? this cast and the writing was great. Cannot believe that with all of the rotten shows on TV, they cancel Sun Records. My cable contract ends in October – I think that’s it for me. Its not worth it. I don’t even watch it now as it is.
Loved sun records series. Will be really disappointed if it isn’t renewed. If the ratings were not good, it’s probably because it wasn’t advertised – like not at all. Please bring it back. And tell a few people about it!!!
Binge watched Sun Records and loved it. Immediately searched to find when season 2 will start. Will be disappointed if this doesn’t continue. If it wasn’t successful, it’s because it wasn’t advertised well. Run it again!!!
Sun Records is a MUST to come back to air on TV!!!…This show shows what it was like in the “50’s” my generation gets to really know what times were like when my parents were young and when these artists were trying to make it in the music world…my generation got to see these people after they have become famous…now my children ages 14-25 get to also see what their parents grew up to and this show puts it all together for my family and 3 generations…BRING IT BACK!!!….PLEASE
Bring it back one of the better shows on TV
Please please please find another home for Sun Records. The stories and history of these music icons and places we all know of are fascinating. I don’t understand why this show would be canceled.
Loved, loved, loved this story. Big fan of the icons represented. Please, Please, Please bring back.
Need to finish the story.
I loved Sun Records. Why would it be cancelled? I found the history of these singing icons fascinating. Please get this show back.
