All good things must come to an end… eventually. Freeform confirms the fifth and final season of its Switched at Birth TV series will not premiere until 2017. A couple of weeks before Switched at Birth creator Lizzy Weiss announced the delay on Twitter, she also announced season five would be Switched at Birth‘s last, leaving the show effectively cancelled. This is the first time Freeform has addressed when the show, which ended its fourth season on a cliffhanger, would return.
Switched at Birth stars Katie Leclerc as Daphne Vasquez and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish, who were, as the title spells out, switched at birth. The cast also includes Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, and guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin. Weiss, Paul Stupin, and Linda Gase executive produce.
A family drama, Switched at Birth explores early adulthood, blended families, deaf culture, and includes scenes shot in American Sign Language. The series has won a Peabody Award as well as a Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming, and an Imagen Award for Best Primetime Program.
Freeform says:
“Switched at Birth” will end its five-season run after more than 100 episodes, in early 2017 with a special 90–minute series finale.
The Peabody Award-winning drama series begins its fifth and final season – including the milestone 100th episode – in 2017. The upcoming season picks up from the cliffhanger finale with Daphne and Bay living in China. A mysterious call has them packing for home, where they try to settle back in, but ten months has brought some changes. Daphne finds herself in the midst of racial tensions at the university and witnesses the racism faced by her black friends Iris, Sharee, and new baseball star Chris, in an episode told solely from their perspectives. The 100th episode sees the return of Angelo Sorrento (guest star Gilles Marini) as a vision brought about by a young woman with an unexpected link to the Kennish/Vasquez families. The series is executive-produced by Lizzy Weiss, Paul Stupin and Linda Gase. The series stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, with guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin.
Are you a fan of the Switched at Birth TV show? Are you frustrated by the delay? Do you think it is ending at the right time, or should it have been renewed? Let us know, below.
This is such a great show!!!! Why cancel it??? With all these cancelled shows it makes me wonder if I should even continue to tune in to ABC, when they continue to cancel good shows.
i was wondering when this show would come to an end… usually family shows end after the kids go off to college… wish i didn’t though
Love the show! Why would they not continue it?
I love this show! Wish it would come back!
Are you kidding me! This is an amazing show! How on earth is it being canceled? Is this some kind of joke? I think I need to go into writing and actually FIGHT to keep popular and GOOD shows going for as long as I can!! No way 10 episodes is going to anwser all the new questions and thoughts to the ending of season 4!! Complete disappointment! I will never get into a new show with this channel again!
First, it’s ridiculous that they are not airing the next season until
2017, plain stupid.
Second, of course it is too soon to end the show, but they will not care what any of the viewers say, so what’s the point?
Guess they wanted more room in the schedule to air all those crap shows like Pretty Little Liars. ABC Family used to be my go to channel but they cancel all their best shows.
i agree
i miss the lying game… recovery road is good too!
Noooo don’t cancel thats crazy please!!!
Switched At Birth is at the top of the list of my four favorite shows. I have watched first run and reruns since the beginning. I wish one more fan could make a difference……………
The directors of switched at birth is making a big mistake why are u making us wait a whole year for switched at birth? It is the best show ever we should see what is going to happen now not later.I love switched at birth it should not end at all there is so much more
This has been my favorite show on television–the characters are so well acted and I’ll miss everything about it. Hope I live long enough to see the final season. I’m a senior citizen–I don’t buy green bananas.
This has been a great show, it’s been a long time coming for me to actually follow one. It was even great to be out of work the whole week just to do a marathon of episodes but not a fan of the cliffhanger and how long til the next season and sadly the last:(
I absolutely LOVED the show. My best friend and I got so inspired by it we went out and bought books on how to teach ourselves sign lanugage before we took courses on it. The show is spreading such a powerful message and I’m so glad I came across it. It completely changed my outlook on life. I’m currently in college now but after I graduate I want to become an interpreter for the hearing impaired. Please don’t end the show!
We all hate to see any show that we enjoy watching come to a end. I hate to see it end in the 5th season. But a good show must come to a ent at some pont.
I hate to see it go. I loved this show. I hope you let us know when in 2017
When they announce the date, we will.
I believe it to be January 10
I’m irritated ! You guys make shows then have them end ! Same with the show twisted !! Do you guys not know what good shows are ! I’m really going to give up with this network !! You guys have a reputation for making tv shows then have them end !! Some shows with no end ing and a lot of unanswered questions !!
I will really hate to see this show end so soon. Like so many ABC Family shows they are all so great then disappear suddenly or mid season. I’m seeing a pattern and I’m about to give up on all shows from this network. I’ve very disappointed. This show should go on and not just by giving the fans 1 90 minute final episode that airs next year!!!! Come on now. I’ve had this on my calendar for months waiting on season 5 to start in April.
Kayt, I don’t think the fifth season is only one 90 minute episode (but agree Freeform could have been more clear). Going by the show’s IMDb page, the first four seasons amount to 93 episodes. The press release says the show will hit its 100 episode milestone, in the fifth and final season. Back in October, Freeform (then ABC Family) renewed Switched at Birth for a 5th season, not just a final episode/movie type deal. http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/switched-at-birth-season-five-renewal-for-abc-family-series-38961/ I would expect between 7 and 10 episodes in the final season. The good thing is, the creator and executive producers know it is… Read more »
I believe there will be 10 episodes in the final season, bringing the tally to 103 episodes. http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/switched-birth-freeform-series-ending-no-season-six/
