All good things must come to an end… eventually. Freeform confirms the fifth and final season of its Switched at Birth TV series will not premiere until 2017. A couple of weeks before Switched at Birth creator Lizzy Weiss announced the delay on Twitter, she also announced season five would be Switched at Birth‘s last, leaving the show effectively cancelled. This is the first time Freeform has addressed when the show, which ended its fourth season on a cliffhanger, would return.
Switched at Birth stars Katie Leclerc as Daphne Vasquez and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish, who were, as the title spells out, switched at birth. The cast also includes Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, and guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin. Weiss, Paul Stupin, and Linda Gase executive produce.
A family drama, Switched at Birth explores early adulthood, blended families, deaf culture, and includes scenes shot in American Sign Language. The series has won a Peabody Award as well as a Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming, and an Imagen Award for Best Primetime Program.
Freeform says:
“Switched at Birth” will end its five-season run after more than 100 episodes, in early 2017 with a special 90–minute series finale.
The Peabody Award-winning drama series begins its fifth and final season – including the milestone 100th episode – in 2017. The upcoming season picks up from the cliffhanger finale with Daphne and Bay living in China. A mysterious call has them packing for home, where they try to settle back in, but ten months has brought some changes. Daphne finds herself in the midst of racial tensions at the university and witnesses the racism faced by her black friends Iris, Sharee, and new baseball star Chris, in an episode told solely from their perspectives. The 100th episode sees the return of Angelo Sorrento (guest star Gilles Marini) as a vision brought about by a young woman with an unexpected link to the Kennish/Vasquez families. The series is executive-produced by Lizzy Weiss, Paul Stupin and Linda Gase. The series stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, with guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin.
Are you a fan of the Switched at Birth TV show? Are you frustrated by the delay? Do you think it is ending at the right time, or should it have been renewed? Let us know, below.
Noooooooo!!! I love this show
I am really upset that switched at birth is ending on its fifth season. I loved this show. I finally found a show that I would watch everyday over and over again. I am heartbroken right now knowing that switched at birth might end. I still have so many questions about the show. Will ty come back? Will there be new guys for bay? or Daphne? I have so much questions.. please don’t end it so soon.
Oh I want to see more this show. I would like to see Ty come back as well for I think he is the best choice for Bay. There is just much I want to see in this show. Please don’t end it after only 5 seasons
I love the show and am very upset that a season has not came out this year. I am also very upest that the next season will be the last. I’m my opinion this was a very good show and it should continue along with the other Freeform shows. Many of my favorite Freeform shows have been cancelled. It seams that all of the actual good shows that have good story lines get cancelled such as Jane by Design. This is upsetting news but it’s nothing I can change.
I also loved Jane by design!
This is a great show. We sit down as a family to watch this show. We all love it. I agree with other comments. All the good shows get cancelled. I wish it wasn’t.
It is really too bad that Freeform is going to cancel this show. This is one of the good ones. With all their other shows about lying and murder I enjoyed watching a show that was actually good. Good story lines, content and cast.
noooooooooooooo its ending too early. ive actually started learning ASL because of this show.
So have i. I bought a gigantic book with all the signs in it.
This show has opened up doors for me even got me interested in learning asl and when I see people of the deaf community I try to communicate with them using asl. Before this show I was never introduced to the lanuage.
Switched at birth is ending too soon. It needs to be renewed please.
I have certainly enjoyed this show and looked forward to more seasons…..why the big delay to 2017? I’m sorry to hear that the final season will be aired. Every time I find a great show, it goes away.
I started watching this on NETFLIX. I started on a Saturday afternoon and a week later I finished watching this series and so so disappointed on the ending!! Just read that there will be a Finale in 2017how upsetting, I truly was disappointed and sad!! Please bring it back have not seen anything like this so moving and family oriented. Looking forward to see the rest!! Even got my Granddaughters hooked on this!! Please please bring it back
I really enjoy this show it’ll be nice for it to continue.
5 seasons is a great run for any show- these actors are very young and talented so they may just want to move on to another show. I have enjoyed Switched at Birth, but the story has lagged at times during a few seasons so having a set ending date could benefit the story telling a great deal.
I absolutely love this show. I’m saddened that it’s coming to an end so soon. I don’t understand with such a high rating why it’s gonna go. 🙁 I wish Bay and Emmett would’ve stayed together.
Also this show has opened up to me a whole new language that I fell in love with which encouraged me to learn ASL.
