Today, ABC airs the final episode of their daytime series, The Chew. Last month, the network announced that the cooking-themed talk show had been cancelled after more than 1,400 episodes. Will you miss it? Was this the right decision?
Launching in September 2011, The Chew replaced the All My Children soap opera after its 41 years on the network. A talk show that incorporates cooking and lifestyle-related segments, the series was initially hosted by Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Oz departed the show after six seasons and Batali left following sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017.
ABC decided to cancel The Chew in order to expand their Good Morning America series to three hours. NBC’s Today show has had a third hour (with various titles) since October 2000. The current incarnation is Megyn Kelly Today.
While the third hour of Today typically followed the regular program’s two-hour broadcast, hour three of Good Morning America will air separately, in the afternoon. The new hour of GMA is expected to be taped and not presented live, as the regular program is. ABC is making this move as Today has been taking the lead in various demographics in the morning ratings race.
If ABC had wanted to expand GMA to three hours, couldn’t they have replaced either The View or Live with Kelley and Ryan? That was unlikely to happen since both perform better in the ratings than The Chew. In particular, The View has been growing its audience and has been seeing its best ratings since the 2014-15 season (a rarity in today’s landscape). Meanwhile, The Chew has been in last place, ranking 13th out of 13 daytime series.
While ABC may have high hopes for a third hour of GMA, they no doubt have an uphill battle ahead. Daytime audiences often don’t like change and some viewers still hold a grudge against The Chew for replacing All My Children. Time will tell if the new hour of GMA will fare any better than The Chew did.

This should NEVER have been canceled – I have learned so much and not just recipes. I love the hosts chemistry and I crack up on a daily basis.
I CANNOT believe that The View with its ever changing hosts has better ratings. That show gives me a headache with all the hosts arguing over each other. Please cancel the VIEW and bring back THE CHEW!!!
No! ABC should NOT have cancelled the BEST morning talk/food show on the network. And NO! I WILL NOT WATCH AN EXTRA HOUR OF GMA! The show that should have cancelled is Live with Kelly and Ryan or The Rachael Ray show. BRING THE CHEW BACK!! PAHLEEZ!!
I watched THE CHEW everyday on my lunch break, i thought the chemistry between Clinton, Carla and Michael was amazing you could see they had a genuine friendship im extremely disappointed that this show has been cancelled and will lobby to see it brought back, maybe on the Food Network!!!
NEVER should have cancelled. Just got s new project where I could watch from home and then you go cancel it . Very upset. Age 61, not in the age group of 18-49, quoted online.
Love the show! Karla Hall, Michael Simon and Clinton Kelly have great chemistry. They all are so talented. It’s a happy show…we need that in today’s world. The recipes are the best. Even Clinton’s craft projects are fun. I will truly miss the show.
They should have added hosts to replace the two that were gone. The three of them were just not enough. Even if they would have had a celebrity chef host every week it would have helped.

Absolutely not! If ratings were dipping it was because they didn’t replace the 2 people that left the show. This caused them to loose some of their fan base. ABC cut off their nose to spite their face. Who needs more GMA! I think it would be great if the show was syndicated. What do you think?
I love The Chew- one of the few shows I watch period. It’s an upbeat show informative and the three remaining have excellent rapport. Perhaps you should have replaced the two hosts that were lost with two others!! I am shocked that it is being cancelled and I have no desire to watch GMA especially to replace this excellent show. All of my friends agree— BRING BACK TBE CHEW!!!!!
I love the Chew! Finally a family friendly show, that didn’t talk politics and BS like that. I learned a lot from watching the show. And Clinton, Carla and Simon’s personalities are infectious. Stupid move by ABC….. and no way will I be watching another hour of GMA DONE……

I have watched taped and shared the Chew for years. It’s part of our daily lives to share food drinks and crafts. This is not acceptable to any of us to have this show canceled. Our hearts are broken for now we gave no one to help us with daily planning for family . Yes the CHEW is family to all of us. A part of our lives have been just shut off. Not fair and if anyo
way this show can come back make it sooner than later. Sad so very sad.
I love The Chew. Clinton, Michael and Carla are “true” friends. Their chemistry is fantastic ! Not only do I enjoy and learn from their cooking demos, I also LAUGH right alone with them ! I was so upset when it was announced that the shore would be canceled. I second another person’s take referring to GMA expanding to another hour. PLEASE….we don’t need any more “talking heads”. BTW, I no longer watch GMA….it is NOT a news show….it is a variety show. BRING BACK THE CHEW !!!!!

No! ABC should not have cancelled the Chew! They could’ve added another well known chef possibly on s rotating basis. I will not watch the new segment. I work and taped the Chee every day.. I also tape Megyn Kelly. That’s enough for me. ABC you lost this viewer and I signed a petition to bring the Chee back on another channel. Even if we cannot get this done, poor decision on your part!
I’m sad that The Chew has been cancelled. My husband and I love the show. We watch it together everyday.
I think ABC used the same rankings testing that predicted the last election. Way off. GMA is a show that I watch, but honestly it’s out of habit. It’s a terrible show. Why would you want to expand to another hour that’s mostly full of crap. It never used to be like that. This network is making really bad decisions lately.
I agree. I cannot find my other post, but I am SICK that ABC cancelled The Chew. It was the only daytime show I really looked forward to. I hate that the show lost Daphne, and Mario did seem disinterested (most likely he had other problems on his mind); but Carla, Clinton, and Michael pushed themselves to the limit to keep the fun and education going. I’m just sick–it feels like I’ve lost part of my family. It was the ONLY show I watched on ABC (sad, but true). Please bring it back!!!
