ABC had stipulated that they would only be interested in a spin-off if Barr had no creative or financial involvement. It seems that producers were able to work out a deal with Barr so that the show could move forward. It’s unclear if Barr’s character will be killed off or if her absence will be explained in some other way.
Here’s the press release for the series order:
THE CONNERS CONTINUE
ABC Picks Up ‘The Conners’ (Working Title) Straight to Series to Premiere This Fall
John Goodman (‘Dan’), Laurie Metcalf (‘Jackie’), Sara Gilbert (‘Darlene’), Lecy Goranson (‘Becky’) and Michael Fishman (‘D.J.’) Are Set to Star as Their Iconic Conner Characters
“The Conners” (working title), a spin-off of the groundbreaking family comedy “Roseanne,” has been greenlit to series with an order of 10 episodes for fall 2018. After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family – Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. – grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.
The series, featuring John Goodman (“Dan”), Laurie Metcalf (“Jackie”), Sara Gilbert (“Darlene”), Lecy Goranson (“Becky”) and Michael Fishman (“D.J.”) as their beloved Conner characters, is set to air Tuesdays (8:00-8:30 p.m.). Additional cast members and a premiere date will be announced later.
Roseanne Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new series.
“The Conners’ stories demonstrate that families can always find common ground through conversation, laughter and love. The spin-off will continue to portray contemporary issues that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago,” ABC shared in a statement.
In support of their new series, cast members John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman said, in a joint statement:
“We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience. We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”
Tom Werner will executive produce, along with Sara Gilbert, Bruce Helford, Dave Caplan, Bruce Rasmussen and Tony Hernandez. Bruce Helford, Dave Caplan and Bruce Rasmussen are also writers. The series is from Tom Werner and Werner Entertainment.

What do you think? Do you plan to check out The Conners TV show on ABC?
Yes I will watch . The reboot was worth the wait .
I’m very happy the show will go on….I’ll miss Rosanne terribly, but I love all the other characters. I hope the new kids will be back as well. I’ll definitely watch – looking forward to it !! I thank Rosanne Barr for accepting the terms – she didn’t have to. I still love you, Rosanne Barr !!
I am a lady over 65 and grew up with all the issues in the original show, this last season was very interesting…and showed what a lot of us baby-boomers were going through… The Conner’s were a family with many middle class issues….There was a lot of comedy involved with the show…and Rosanne’s dry humor kept the ball rolling…plus a good writing staff…I hope that they will eventually let Rosanne rejoined the cast…Please do not let her die off….Dan and her could have gotten divorced which is also very in tune with our times…. This would be a good way… Read more »
I use to like Roseanne at first, but she got really annoying and it continued in real life. I hope they permanently remove her and never bring her back. Just my opinion and love the show without her.
I really don’t this this show will work without Roseanne. I’ll watch the first few episodes, but I just don’t think this will be as good.
Without Roseanne? You BET I’ll watch.
Amen!
i think it will be a much better show without Rosanne
Yes – I will absolutely watch! They don’t need Roseanne to make that show work – in fact I think they will have even more stories to tell as a family after the death of a mother.
I think the show will be a hit and look forward to it a great strong cast
I’m looking forward to the show I think it will work without Roseanne it was Sara Gilberts idea to get them all back together the all strong enough to make the show a hit without Barr
I look forward to see the show, I never liked Roseanne Barr
not interested
Good, I’m looking forward to checking it out.
Sorry, don’t see this working. Dan and Roseanne were a team on the side of old school values and conservatism while the rest of the family was more liberal. You were able to see both sides at least. I just dont see Dan being able to hold his own against Jackie and Darlene. No interest in another anti Trump and anti old school show. I can watch Will and Grace for that
No interest. I probably won’t watch anything on ABC. I’ll wait and see what the reviews and ratings are on the new Lauren Cohan show. A shame this Network has become such a disaster.
I am very interested. ABC gets my vote. Will watch more. I this this network is great. Keep it up.
Very happy to hear the show will go on as The Conor’s…Will definitely watch every week.
