It won’t be long before The Crossing “crosses over” to the television afterlife. The TV show was one of the many cancelled TV shows of the 2017-18 season but clearly, this series has some devoted fans. Why won’t there be a second season?
An ABC sci-fi thriller, The Crossing stars Steve Zahn, Natalie Martinez, Sandrine Holt, Georgina Haig, Tommy Bastow, Rob Campbell, Rick Gomez, Marcuis W. Harris, Grant Harvey, Jay Karnes, Simone Kessell, Kelley Missal, Luc Roderique, and Bailey Skodje. Luke Camilleri recurs. The story unfolds in the small Oregon fishing town of Port Canaan. Tranquility there comes to an abrupt end, when 47 evacuees from a war-torn country wash up on the shore. The newcomers aren’t just any refugees seeking asylum — they’re Americans from 180 years in the future. As the hunt for the truth grows, it will change the lives of the townies and their new guests, forever.
The show got off to lackluster start in the ratings. The premiere of The Crossing drew a meager 0.94 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.40 million viewers. The second and third episodes saw significant declines and later episodes dropped as well. Last week’s installment attracted a meager 0.40 demo rating with 2.53 million.
With ratings like these, it’s easy to see why ABC decided to cancel The Crossing. It’s also no surprise that the network decided to air the final two episodes on a Saturday night.
Could the show have picked up more viewers if it had been given more time? Considering the downward trajectory of the ratings, it’s hard to make that argument. For whatever reason, The Crossing just didn’t resonate with a broad audience.
What do you think? Did you like The Crossing TV show? Would you have watched a second season of this ABC series?
I am so disappointed this show has been cancelled, it was something all my co-workers would talk about come Tuesday morning…sometimes Wed, if we had to record & watch later. The story was building & getting better with every episode, the characters were great with depth. This is the only ABC show I watch, or rather watched…back to Global & CTV I go 🙁 Super bummed out, could have at least provided a couple extra episodes to close it off…I read that the producer or director found that it was a stand alone season that doesn’t leave you hanging…BULL TICKY… Read more »
My brother and I absolutely loved this show. All of the characters were great and the premise was very entertaining. I want more, and am so disappointed that they’ye canceled it. I hope that someone takes up the “ball” so to speak and has at least 1 more season or that someone will make a mini-series out of it so we can get some closure! Please, please bring it back somehow!
I had to DVR this series due to work…sat down and finished it the other day….I found it amazing and couldn’t wait to watch the next show….now I hear its being cancelled….just a note, ive not found many shows that I can binge watch, this is one that I will never tire of…so sick of game and reality shows, real actors with a great story line….is what we are not getting…big mistake…
This show pulled me to abc guess i will watch a different network now
i really love this show why cancel it =(
I DVRd all of season 1 and binged watched it. It was a really great series. Loved it!!! I’m so sad to hear there will not be a 2nd season. 🙁
That’s unfortunate. I never watch TV anymore but really got into this show. I would totally have watched a season two. Maybe it will go to hulu or one of the internet programing companies. I hope for hulu! Thanks for an interesting show.

The Crossing was the best show ABC has aired in a long time! It was better than LOST because it could be real. PLEASE RESURRECT IT!!!!
I loved The Crossing! I thought it was a great show, very original and intriguing. It kept me enthralled the entire season and I was very disappointed when I learned that it had been cancelled. I was really looking forward to seeing future seasons. I would have kept watching this show for a very long time.
With each episode, this series got better and better…Great acting and Great content. We recently started recommending it to our friends, only to find out the series had been cancelled. Guess we’ll go back to watching HGTV…
Please reconsider keeping the crossing. This show is different from all the others and
is a great show
Yes absolutely would watch. Very interesting show. Please continue with new season….
I really liked this show. I’m sad it has been canceled along with many others I liked. Summer tv is awful!! Nothing but reality shows which I don’t watch!!
The Crossing has (had) untapped creative potential. The series finale actually highlighted the beginning of a story to be told, not deserving to end in cancellation. It’s a serious mistake for networks to give up on shows with potential too soon. Compared to all of the horrific programming currently showing on commercial TV … and the horrific programming planned in the future illustrates that networks care nothing about their viewers, especially sci-fi programming for viewers. What should never be lost to those responsible for cancelling The Crossing is that viewers have memories which are longer than the short-sighted creative patience… Read more »
Thanks, Charles, for putting this so well. I am frustrated with network TV canceling shows prematurely; often, good programs take a while to take off, either for the cast or writing to find the grove. This show is unique and has so much potential and I’m sad to see it yanked and hope someone else picks it up. Mean while, I’m canceling my satellite TV and will only watch shows that are on at least their third season. I’m not going to invest in a story and characters that are going to suddenly disappear.
I came to the show late, but I like it. Lots of plot twists that keep me coming back. I would definitely watch a second season. Good writers could keep this sci fi mystery show going for some time. The network seems short-sighted, especially with all the terrible programming that I would never watch. they just don’t give some shows enough of a chance to catch on.
Yes I most definitely would have watched another full season on The Crossing!! I most definitely enjoyed the first season. I’m tired of n networks cancelling all good new shows before they get a chance to really take off and The Crossing I think was something that offered a little bit of a different show. It was a nice fresh change the story line. I liked it. I liked the characters. It was fun. It offered some drama, some sci-fi, some suspense, some fantasy, some family values, a little mix.
