Tonight marks the final episode of The Defenders for the season. How likely is the CBS freshman series to be back next fall with season two?
The Defenders follows a pair of lawyers operating out of Las Vegas. They’ll do just about anything for their Sin City clients, often taking on cases no one else will touch, and try to keep their sanity while doing it. The TV show stars veterans Jerry O’Connell and Jim Belushi as well as Jurnee Smollett, Tanya Fischer, and Gillian Vigman.
For its premiere, the series dominated its timeslot with a 2.9 in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 12.2 million total viewers. That put the new show in first place in both categories and essentially doubled the performance of ABC’s now-cancelled, The Whole Truth.
Unfortunately, The Defenders’ audience slowly eroded over the course of the season and by January had hit a new low of a 1.5 rating in the demo and 6.81 million viewers. CBS switched the series to Fridays in February and, not surprisingly, the ratings got worse. On Fridays, Defenders has averaged a 1.3 demo rating and that’s worse than what now-cancelled Medium was getting in the same timeslot.
If you look at the season averages, The Defenders is one of CBS’ worst performers. Though the network has not officially cancelled it yet, it is hard to imagine that CBS execs would consider renewing it for a second season.
What do you think? Should The Defenders be cancelled? Why do you think the series hasn’t attracted a bigger audience?

Great show hope to see more
My husband and I love it. Please do not cancel it!!!
Jim Belushi made the show. I think it should stay.
So will we get a reply as to the outcome of the show being renewed
@c romano: Probably won’t know until mid-May.
We have really enjoyed the show. Belugi lights up the screen.
The the new Friday spot is now the beginning of a great TV night. KEEP the show.
I have been watching the show for only a short time and I love it – I don’t believe there was much advertising when it first came out. Please consider keeping it on not only does it have good stories the comedy and drama is a nice mix – not all blood and gore. The two actors have magnitiusm and it shows in the show.
GREAT SHOW!!!
Please keep this show, especially for the Friday Night line-up. It is a fun show to watch, and the chemistry among the actors is great. We can only watch so many news programs or weekly re-runs…in other words, slim pickins on Fridays until the Defenders came on board.
Are you serioulsy? Really? You’re thinking of cancelling the Defenders? It’s one of the most awesome shows around. I swear, these big network execs have their heads where the sun doesn’t shine. I wish I could earn their big bucks and make some of the biggest mistakes they make and still have my job. I mean seriously. It’s like the Medium when it was on, one of the best show going, but nooooo, gotta screw with it. You know, if these idiots would stop playing with the time slots, (like all the CSI’s), then maybe people could follow the viewing… Read more »
What a shame to cancel such a good show. Problem is, people are so used to watching the gory, bloody detective or forensic shows, they don’t recognize a great comedy/sort of drama. Please keep it on. I always looked forward to seeing it. I know many people feel the same way. Also, you couldn’t have picked better actors. Love them.
Enjoyed it very much! Please keep it on!
The only show I looked forward to watching during the week. I enjoy the friendship and alot of the quirky humor. Please keep it going give it a chance!!
Keep the show – it’s a better hour of television than 90% of the junk that’s on the air. Put it on after Mike & Molly and watch the ratings grow!
Keep the show – it’s a better hour of television than 90% of the crap that’s on the air. Put it on after Mike & Molly and watch the ratings grow!
