Tonight marks the last episode of The Event for 2010. NBC plans to relaunch the series in three months, on February 28th, after letting their new series The Cape have the timeslot. Is it a risky move? Not really. Ultimately, they don’t have much choice.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), a young man who’s investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.
The series debuted in September to decent ratings with a 3.6 in the 18-49 demo and 10.88 million total viewers. That’s a healthy sampling but, considering all of the promotion that NBC put behind it, the programmers were likely disappointed by its third place rank in the timeslot.
While some viewers clearly love the show, more than half who watched the first episode have already lost interest. The Event has been losing viewers, sometimes as much as 15 or 20% in one week, and to date has never shown an increase week-to-week in the demo. The most recent installment garnered just a 1.7 rating in the demo and 5.19 million viewers.
You can blame the network for not doing a better job of promoting The Event but clearly there’s a problem with the series when people who already watch don’t feel compelled to return week after week.
Will this February “relaunch” help? Based on recent TV history, the answer is no. Just look at V and FlashForward. People who were interested in The Event have either already tried it and stuck around or given up on it. Those who haven’t watched previously are very unlikely to give a try because they assume that they’ve missed too much backstory already. On top of that, when the show returns, the ratings will likely be lower than what they are now. By the time The Event returns in February, many casual fans will have already gotten involved with other shows.
The one thing that The Event has going for it is the fact that it’s on NBC. The peacock network continues to struggle and The Event is currently the fifth most-watched scripted program on the network. If things go as expected, it will drop much lower on the list next year. Still, with the exception of The CW, NBC is the only network that would consider giving this series more time. They’ll surely let all 22 episodes air.
The Event returns on Monday, February 28th and will have 12 more original episodes to air at that point. Will there be a second season? We’ll have to wait and see but hopefully the producers will plan ahead and not end the show without any resolution.
What do you think? Does The Event have a chance for survival? What could NBC do to save this show? Anything?

Well I like the show and hope that it continues. You really have to wonder why the brain trust at NBC would start a new show that would appeal to the same potential viewers that would be watching MNF? I mean I saw the promotions for it on SNF so they were looking at the right market but didn’t put it in the right time or day slot. I had to watch it through “On Demand.” Not the brightest bulbs on the tree, are they? Well maybe they will learn something but I don’t place much hope in that. If… Read more »
I watched all episodes on castcast on demand and loved the show ..
My wife is not a big sifi fan so I watched when she was’nt watching tv. I hope it brought
back for another season or at least brought to some conclusion…..Come on NBC
don’t leave it hanging or you’ll lose more viewers in the future……
I think the Event is a great show. Can not wait for it to return in February. The best thing is that on Cablevision, if you miss an episode its on Free Demand so I can always catch up.
I am devestated…..cancelled? How horrible. It was by far one of my favorite shows (that & L&O are all I watch)…..PLEASE please please bring it back……
As for The Cape….we made ourselves watch the 1st one & about 15 minutes of the 2nd show but that was it. Terrible acting….terrible plot?…..take it off the air immediately. & of course, replace it with The Event….:)
I too view every new series with scepticism. I hate to get involved just so they can jump and pull the plug. The way things go now there would never be a seinfeld or ER. I loved Jericho and it was gone. I swore I wouldn’t get into Trauma but oh well where is it. I did the same thing with The Event and Chase and it looks like it’s gonna happen again. I am sick of it and I know soon everyone else will tire of it as well.
BRING BACK MY ONLY FAVORITE SHOW ON TV.THE EVENT.
We’ve been waiting for the Holiday season to end and just guessing as to when “The Event” would be coming back. I’d hate to see it end. It has a great cast and the story line is starting to gain substance and make sense. It has enough of a reality based plot to make the sci-fi aspect ok. Even my husband who usually groans at my Sci-Fi addiction likes it and has been wondering “what has happened to The Event and when will it be back on”.
Bring it back….why keep us in suspense!
I love The Event. I watched the THE CAPE, it was terrible. Please bring back THE EVENT. You need to give it a chance, but forget The Cape. Thanks
I sure hope that there will be a second season for the event. I watched Journeyman, cancelled, flash forward, cancelled. You executives need to give these well written shows a little more time and not get so anxious to cancel at the drop of a hat. You wonder why some of the non major networks get more and more of the share of the market, because they stick with it. A good example is the 10+ years of stargate, stargate sg-1 series. good cast, good scripts.
I don’t think the ratings are taking into consideration a lot of people watch shows on demand. Times have change; I never watch television shows on the day they com on…..Love The Event!
The networks are screwed. I watched, and enjoyed, the first three episodes, and then the “talk” began on how the ratings weren’t good. So. As a result of my experience with FlashForward, I started saving the TiVo recordings, unwatched, to my computer hard drive. If I hear the show makes it to an acceptable resolution I’ll watch it from the third ep to the last, other wise I’ll flush the remaining eps. There are a lot of viewers just like me. There’s a ton of good NON-NETWORK TV so we don’t have to put up with network crap. It’s been… Read more »
Yes to Tom! I love The Event so much that I “marathoned” through all past episodes on Comcast’s TV series. Do the TV gods pay attention to people like me and web viewers?? Tom is spot on! If you care about viewership, why allow such a long hiatus that people think the series has been canceled! I can understand a break between holidays, but, give me a break! This series’ demise will be square on the slumping shoulders of the cross-eyed nit-wits who make the decisions. I rarely watch fictional TV, so just air the remaining episodes and then spin… Read more »
to all networks…dont put a show on the air if only after a few weeks you end up pulling it for a few weeks and then decide to bring it back. When are networks gonna wake up and realize that if a show is good dont take a break beacuse there are sentiments that say… why bother watching any shows at all becasue no one has the balls to back them. nbc/abc/cbs/scify? – if you are going to run a show thats on the scifi spectrum it wont appeal to mass audiences so expect a black eye and dig in… Read more »
I feel the same….I didn’t watch much of regular networks for years now and after the last 2 seasons I’m totally done with them……I’m really ready to only use the tv for dvd and tapes. on the cable networks, History is now a reality network! Military channel …same stuff over and over and over…enough!!!! Love USA network, Food network and TCM. Other than that and some sports, TV broadcasting can go to hell!!!!
great show – a little to complicated to follow – bring it back
