Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.
What do you think? Would a fourth season of The Game be worth watching if the budget had to be cut and not all of the principals were involved?
woooooooooooow i’ve been watching this show for so long even the repeats and its true the ratings went down becauses u moved it to fridays **** u know people go out fridays or they are to tried hello… week days are so much better….cw has other shows they should take out.. why one that people can relate to and is funny….

I heard about The Game here and there about a year ago or so, but never paid any close attention to it because I never knew when it was on. It wasn
I am a huge fan of The Game and I hate seeing it go. I honestly feel that if the show wasn’t moved to Friday nights then the ratings wouldn’t have dropped so drastically, and therefore the show probably would not be cancelled. Is it me, or does it seem like this happens to alot of black shows??? I’m so desperate to see the show return, I really don’t care what network picks it up. However, I am in agreement with many when I say if its not the same characters don’t even bother!!!
I love The Game & I have been watching it since it was first aired. I have recommended the show to a lot of people – and they really like the show. I HOPE THE SHOW COMES BACK ON !!! Get those actors back to working on a great show!
The Game is a great show with a terrific cast. It’s funny and engaging, and it actually did well on the CW, considering there was very little (or no) promotion done for it, and it was moved to Friday nights, which for that network, is where tv shows go to die.
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL “THE GAME”. IT’S THE BEST SHOW ON TV.
I just started watching The Game about a month ago. (I had never seen or heard of it prior to then, however I have watched all 3 seasons “twice” already on YouTube) I am a 45 yr old woman and I love The Game…come to find out my 70 yr. old mother have been watching this show all along!!! Please, please, please BET, CBS, any network…pick up this show. It has something for everyone.. truly a great show!
Bring the Game back. I love that show and all the stars.
BET can possibly bring back the show over the summer when the other shows go on hiatus-hence avoiding a conflict with other schedules. Why not?
bring it back its a great show and funny as hell!
i love the game and yes there should be a season 4.
OMG.NONO..Why are they doing this to us..this is the only thing on tv besides the reality shows and im getting sick of them really..BET can put these lame reality shows but they can’t come to negotiate a real deal with real stars that bring them real money with real long term ratings. They need to stop the madness and do the damn thing…I so luv this show since day 1 and was mad as hell when UPN switch up the time shots. I feel like they owe us this show back i need to know if derwin baby is his?… Read more »
