As expected, ABC has cancelled The Gates after one season on the air. The ratings certainly didn’t dictate a second season and a couple weeks ago, series star Frank Grillo said that he’d heard unofficially that the show wouldn’t be back.
Though even actress Lindsay Lohan wanted to see it return, it’s now been confirmed that The Gates has indeed been cancelled. Some of the people connected with the show have tweeted about the series’ passing.
From the show’s Twitter feed comes, “We would like to thank our followers for sticking with us through this great journey.”
Gates creator Richard Hatem wrote simply, “Thanks to everyone who loved it. DVD set to be released…someday?”
Consulting producer and writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe tweeted, “Thank you to #TheGates fans, crew & cast for a great run. It was a blast. Seriously some of the best fans ever.” He later posted, “4 sale, lux devlpmnt/incrprtd town w/ upscale owners, prvt police/fire, exclnt school, occasional mysterious death”
Colton L Haynes wrote, “Was a great/fun experience and thk u all for coming along for the ride!. He followed that up with, “THE GATES cast and crew: thk u all for the good times! Learned alot and had a great summer with u all! Cheers to the future!” and posted this photo with #ripBrettCreski. Wolfe responded, “Sob… Too young!”
James Preston looks forward to the future, tweeting, “No worries gates fans follow us on to our new exciting roles!” Travis Caldwell echoed that sentiment, saying, “its all good more to come from all of us !!!”
Justin Miles wrote, “We gave em a hell of a run, though…” Janina Gavankar feels similarly, saying, “Sad. But we’re incredibly proud of what we made.”
Young McKaley Miller tweeted, “thank you guys for all the support!! seriously, y’all are awesome!! #TheGates is officially over, but it was such a great experience!! TY :)”
Andrea Powell wrote, “Thanks for all the love, fans of #TheGates. We’ll miss you! :-*”
Rachel Dipillo wrote, “We had a fun ride on The Gates. Love everyone I worked with and can’t wait to see what you do next! #RIPLEXIEWADE”
Grillo tweeted, “Thanks to all of you for supporting us. It made the whole thing worth it. Lots more fun stuff coming.” Grillo also said that he’d share what would have happened in the second season. After son Charlie is saved, Nick and his family would have stayed in the Gates community. The Radcliffs decide to take a break from one another. Leigh becomes the head of the police and Nick takes over the Gates board and oversees the community.
What do you think? Are you sorry that The Gates won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to see happen?

I, too, just happened upon this show on Netflix…instantly hooked. I can’t believe ABC would cancel such a fantastic show! ABC fails again to sit back and watch a fresh and fantastic show take root. Too quick to cancel. I wish a cable channel would pick this show up, if they could.
im soooo pi$$ed i just watched this on netflix to find out no seasion 2 how could you not even finish story
I too just found the show on netflix and fell in love with it. I also loved Pushing Daisies and Eastwick. I do not believe that the ratings for these shows could have been so bad that they had to cancel them, yet they keep the Bacholor??? ABC is becoming a huge disapointment.
What a great show.. I for one am gonna really miss it. Had no idea it was cut! I am very disappointed..
I have been looking forward to the summer, just so I could watch the 2nd season of the gates. I am really disapointed that the gates might not be returning.
i am very disappointed in the cancelation of the gates.i been waiting for its return all year.how does abc think i am going to buy the dvd if thats all their is.
I also just found this TV series on Netflix, and I loved it. I kept searching for the second season… and came across this. : ( Wish they would have kept it going.
Given that it was a show that should have been on at 8pm or at thelatest 9pm by prime time stadards and centering so much on a young cast and vampires etc. – they should have put it on a regular night, earlier and it would have been a hit. Factually, if it was shown in Fall and not summer, it would have been 0ne for ABC. They made the same mistake with “Eastwick”. Too much slash and dash from this network.
A network that is more generated towards an audience with teens & adults like CW, Syfye, etc. was needed for The Gates tv show to be a success. When will these networks realize this… do they not use the internet to read what people really want?

thats tha worst thing eva….cancelling one of the series that made me not sleep till i finishd wochn it?!!…nw wot nxt?
So sad to hear The Gates will not return this summer. ABC has become such a disappointment to me and many other viewers. I will sadly miss AMC and OLTL. If GH is canceled, I will stop watching ABC completely! Why start a new series , get the viewers hooked, just to cancel it? Shame on you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anonymous – please explain why you feel that “The Gates” could not make it on a mainstream station; the writing was literate, the plots were surprising and fresh. The acting may have been a bit overdone at times, but in a weekly series that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. In 1969 Star Trek the TV series was cancelled and the viewers went wild, resulting in its return in 1978 as a motion picture. Twenty-five years later, that original series has spawned 10 full-length motion pictures, 4 spin off TV series, and annual Trekkie gatherings everywhere. The mania has… Read more »
Wowww, I just stumbled upon this show on netflix and LOVE IT!! How come it wasn’t advertised enough so that people knew about it?? It would have had a huge following but noone knew about it!! 🙁 I can’t believe it’s cancelled and we don’t even get to find out what happens to everyone!!
Unfortunately shows like THE GATES and PUSHING DAISIES simply could not survive on a regular network. It was a great show with excellent writing and unpredictable plotlines. Shows like these are definitely for mature audiences who can appreciate their complexities. Fans truly wish that they had been picked up by SciFi Channel where these shows could’ve found their niche audience and could have survived longer.
I would like to see the 101 pick up the Gates like they have done with Damages. It is a great show and ended with major cliff-hangers! ABC has a history of killing off shows. I rarely watch network TV anymore because of this.
